Free Public Screening of Jane Campion's "Bright
Star" at South Pasadena Library on April 17 at 7:30
pm
In honor of National Poetry Month, the newly formed South Pasadena
Arts Council (SPARC) in partnership with the South Pasadena Public
Library and the Friends of the Library present a free screening of the
critically acclaimed 2009 film, "Bright Star," on Saturday, April 17 at
7:30 pm in the Library Community Room.

Directed by Academy Award winner Jane Campion, "Bright Star"
depicts the secret romance between nineteenth-century poet John
Keats and the love of his short life, Fanny Brawne. With its stunning
images and evocative score, critics have called this PG-rated film about
poetry and love a visual poem in itself.

Following the screening, actor Paul Schneider (NBC's "Parks and
Recreation," "Lars and the Real Girl"), who received the National
Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in
"Bright Star," will give a behind-the-scenes talk about the making of the
film and working with director Campion.

The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro St.
Admission is free, but donations to SPARC are encouraged to fund
future events.
Doors open at 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Library Author Night with Monica Holloway on April
22
Celebrated author Monica Holloway
will discuss her latest release
Cowboy and Wills during an
Author Night event on Thursday,
April 22 at 7:00 pm in the Library
Community Room. The book is an
exceptionally moving story of her
young son, who was diagnosed with
Autism Spectrum Disorder, and his
wonderful relationship with the
golden retriever puppy who
transformed his life. It has been
called "charming," "winning," and
"touching" by such publications as
The Washington Post and
Publisher's Weekly. Monica's first
book, Driving with Dead People, a
darkly humorous tale of growing up
in a horrifically dysfunctional family,
has been optioned for development
into a motion picture.

The program is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library, the
Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, the Kiwanis Club of
South Pasadena, and the Institute for the Redesign of Learning. The
event will also present "Inside Looking Out," an award-winning nine-
minute documentary by student filmmaker Nick Simone about what it is
like to live with Asperger's. Also featured will be local singing sensation
Matthew Myronowicz, who recently finished second during LA tryouts
for the "America's Got Talent" TV show.

Public Safety Tip of the Month: Move Right for
Sirens and Lights
When the Fire Department is called to
an emergency, it is important that safety
                                personnel respond quickly and safely.

If you are driving down the road and see
the lights and sirens of an emergency vehicle in your rear view mirror,
move to the right and stop to allow emergency vehicles to move
easily down the road. Once the emergency vehicles have passed,
merge back into traffic when it is safe to begin driving.

Every time fire engines or aid cars are called to an emergency, fire
fighters are giving their all to help others. Do your part as a driver to
help fire fighters do their job as quickly and safely as possible.

Learning and doing are the stage directions for a four-week drama
program, "All The World's A Stage," at the South Pasadena Public

schools and the South Pasadena Public Library challenge children to
turn off the TV for one week and discover many other activities to share
with their families. Children who do not attend the SPUSD elementary
schools can pick up their "Turn Off the TV Chart" from Children's
Services in mid-April. The South Pasadena Public Library will offer free,
fun alternatives to television watching, including Barks and Books,
storytimes, and a children's concert.
