The abbey has its own farm (Bio – Suisse) and is located in a beautiful area above the lake of Neuchâtel. From here, you have a great view of the lake and the mountains (the Alps). The abbey can be reached from the center of Neuchâtel: 10 min bus ride plus a 15 min walk through the forest. Around 12 people (between 4 and 70 years old) live and work in this “open monastery”. USA: MTV 06 SPROUT New York 1/5-31/12/2009: Application deadline: 15/4/2009 Vols: 4 Project language: English SPROUT is dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities and mental retardation to grow through challenging and safe travel experiences. Vols will co-lead small groups of adults with special needs on short vacations to various destinations. Responsibilities include ensuring safety, providing emotional and physical support, enhancing fun, budgeting, driving and activity planning 24 hours a day while on trips. Vols must be willing to assist with all Adult Daily Living skills (brushing teeth, separating dirty clothes, showering etc). This is very challenging work, yet also very rewarding and fun. Experience working with this population is an asset but not required. Training will be provided. Between trips, some light office work or assistance is required. While on trips you will stay in hotels. In between trips, you will stay at a youth hostel. Volunteers will be responsible for their own meals, transportation and activities when not on a trip. SJV-L091: YOUTH HOUSE SCHOOL , Hanoi 2 vol The Youth House School is a small non-formal education center for disadvantaged, street and poor children. It is also a friendly place for young local people and international volunteers to come to explore their cultural diversity with lots of youth exchanges such as music performance, photos exhibition, and lessons for the children and funny leisure activities. We need teachers and volunteers to give lessons to the children and cook meals for 20 children every day. We combine these activities with projects to help disadvantaged people at Fisher village who are very old and live in slum-boats on Red river by giving them free food, supporting medicine for their disease, providing water filter, toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes etc. Volunteers will join a team of local young people and SJ Vietnam coordinators to manage the projects and participate in daily activities at the school. You need to have a very high motivation, very good communication skills and to be able to be independent in your work. SJV-L092: HAI DUONG WELFARE CENTER (Hai Duong city - 50 km from Hanoi) 3 vol Hai Duong welfare center was established in March 1982. With about 1000 mentally or physically disabled and disadvantaged children coming from many parts of Hai Duong province, the center aims to provide compulsory education and vocational training to create employment opportunities for the teenagers. The center has a wide variety of courses for children ranging from infants to 18 years old. For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 are provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend vocational training courses at the center. We need volunteers to organize activities with the children and support the local staff. The volunteers will play games with the children, take care of infant orphans and organize activities such as reading books. The voluntary work at the center is quite hard and it requires volunteers with high motivation and patience. So volunteers need to be well prepared before starting this project. Accommodation: Volunteers will stay at a dormitory. The accommodation is very simple, basic. SJV-L093: XUAN THUY NATIONAL MARINE PARK (Giao Xuan, Nam Dinh - 150 km from Hanoi) 4 vol Xuan Thuy National Marine Park is 150 kilometers south-east of Hanoi. The core zone of the park has a total area of 7,100 hectares. In 2003 Xuan Thuy Natural Reserve was approved as a national park. The park is considered to be a typical wetland ecosystem of national and international importance. In addition to a high bio-diversity, Xuan Thuy National Park is also known as an important platform for migratory birds including the black-faced spoonbill, one of the worlds’ endangered species, other important marine species and mangrove ecosystem. We need volunteers to clean the river banks, plant trees, build garbage storages in the national park with the local community. They will organize workshops or campaigns to raise awareness of the local people about environmental protection and the ecological systems and update the website of the national park. The volunteers will also organize English classes for the young people in the village to encourage them to communicate in English. Accommodation: Home stay with the local people or staying at guesthouse of National Park. Remarks: Volunteers should be enthusiastic, patient, optimistic, and full of energy and ready to work hard and be able to do manual work for example rice harvesting. SJV-L094: TUTORS OF ENGLISH FOR BLIND CHILDREN AND ADULTS (Hanoi) 3 vol Nguyen Dinh Chieu is a school for blind children and a center for blind adults. The center aims to vocational training, cultural education exchange ideas and organized cultural performance for blind people in Hanoi and other provinces of Vietnam. Children there come mainly from Hanoi, but the school also hosts children from other provinces. We need volunteers who can teach English to children and create a friendly environment in order to encourage them to communicate in English. The volunteers will join a team of local young people and SJ Vietnam coordinators to manage the projects and participate in daily activities at the school. SJV-L095: GAME ORGANIZERS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN IN VIETNAM (Hanoi) 2 vol The National Hospital of Pediatrics (NHP) is specialized in treating children coming from different provinces in Vietnam. The hospital consists of 22 departments, with the number of permanent treating patients amounting up to 1000-1200, age rage from infancy to nearly 17 years old. The majority of them are afflicted with difficult-to-cure ailments, such as hematologist, nephrologists… Most patients come from low-income class, parents working in agriculture sector, living rather poor life. During the treatment period, the patients do not have the opportunity to learn or participate in common leisure activities. We need volunteers to organize games (e.g: singing, drawing, magic shows, etc). The volunteers can prepare a performance with the children every month. They can also help the Vietnamese volunteers to build playrooms, and a library. They should act like an active volunteer not like an alternative tourist. Accommodation: Simple in our LTV House. SJV-L096: HOLD THE FUTURE – CENTER FOR DISABLED PEOPLE AND TEENAGERS (Hanoi) 1 vol Hold the future” is a centre for young disabled people coming mainly from Hanoi. They have disadvantaged conditions and it is really difficult for them to find a job to earn a living. In this centre they work by themselves and they also support for their life. Products from the centre such as lacquer painting, embroidery, souvenirs, and postcards will be exported to many countries. The money gained from their products will be paid for their salaries and their daily life. The centre has two places: the first one is for producing mentioned products above, and the other is for gardening. At the second place they plant some kinds of trees: fruit trees, pot trees decorative plants), vegetables. They even feed fish, poultry. All products from the second place will be used to serve for themselves and one part is sold to get money to get by with their life. We need a volunteer to join this project in order to help the director of the centre who is also a disabled person to do the website management, help the accountant. The volunteer can design samples of some kinds of products. He can choose what kind of job they would like to do in the centre. Creativity is highly encouraged there. The director will give the volunteer favourable conditions to do their innovation. Young disabled from the centre also want to learn more from the international volunteers. The volunteer could teach them how to make some art craft from their countries. The volunteer can also do gardening in another place. It is important for the volunteer to be patient, enthusiastic, hardworking during their time at the centre. After his/her voluntary work in the centre the volunteer will have a great experience. SJV-L097: BO DE PAGODA (Hanoi) 2 vol Bo De pagoda is a place of Buddhist worship. Regarding the religion, the female monks always try their best to help people and always act in a peaceful and respectful way toward others. According to the Buddhist belief, pagodas always welcome all kinds of people with different situations and help them to find out how to solve their problems. There are about 50 children living in the pagoda: around 20 infancies, 16 high school students, and 14 secondary pupils. There are also some women to take care of the children. The director of the pagoda, Monk Thich Dam Lan, wants to give all the children the chance to have an education. We need volunteers to teach English to the children, to do some gardening and to clean the pagoda’s surrounding. They can also play with the children, help the women from the pagoda to take care of them and explain the children how important it is to preserve the environment where they are living. Orphans will have a chance to learn English and communicate in this language. Explain to the children how important it is to preserve the environment where they are living. SJV-L098:VOCATIONAL CENTER (Hanoi) 2 vol This is a center which often receives disabled people, orphans, homeless children and people coming from wounded soldiers’ families. The people in the center are trained and their food is provided for free as well accommodation. After graduating from this center, nearly all of them can earn a living by themselves with given jobs. With people who have difficulties in finding jobs, the center will help them or accept them as employees because there is also a workshop for them. The center produces many kinds of goods such as: embroidery, raincoat, bags, purse, tailor, souvenirs according to orders of customers. Their products are exported to Europe and many other countries. In most companies workers only can have around 70% benefit from their effort, 30% will be used for maintenance of the factories or for staff salary. According to the director of the center, the disabled there are paid from 80% to 90%; the rest will be spent for some necessary things they are using everyday such as: water, electricity….etc. The employees at the center often have outdoor activities such as picnic or going out so that they feel more relaxed. The center produces many kinds of goods so volunteers can help at some certain stages of producing or do one particular work. If they really want to take part in some jobs which they do not how to do, they will be trained by the teachers of the center. We need volunteers to take part in some certain stages of the production such as: sewing, cutting, ironing, decorating wedding dress, making clothes or embroidery, etc…. They can help to prepare lunch for everybody at the center. And they can help the center to find out new sponsors or partners. Accommodation: Simple in our LTV House. SJV-L099: SJ VIETNAM OFFICE MANAGEMENT 1 vol The volunteer will work at office and they will be considered as a member of SJ Vietnam staff. She/he will have the same tasks as SJ Vietnam staff. She/he will coordinate the relationships among long-term volunteers and SJ Vietnam staffs to ensure a good and friendly working environment. She/he will take part in LTV meeting every Thursday evening and staff meeting every Friday evening with all the long-term volunteers and SJ Vietnam staffs to discuss the SJ Vietnam projects and life as a volunteer. A report will be made of every LTV meeting. She/he checks all the furniture or logistic in the SJ Vietnam Youth Houses. If there is anything broken, she/he will report to SJ Vietnam accountant and finance manager and make a finance plan. The volunteer who join in this project also help LTV coordinators do evaluation every mid-month and every month. She/ he can join, help or support any department when they need help as well. The volunteer will give full co-operation to the board and try to bring trust and confidence to co-workers. The volunteer will be in charge of running the first few camp meetings, helping to establish a cooking/shopping schedule, assisting with free time activities, etc. Besides, together with other SJ Vietnam staff, make investigation to write Programmer for the following year, update the infosheets if there are any changes. He/She will be helped by other active SJ Vietnam staff members. He/She will manage and update the SJ Vietnam website. He/She will join many different volunteer projects of SJ Vietnam in order to understand more about those activities to write articles or to look for information to publish on the website. Together with the other SJ Vietnam coordinators, he/she will update the infosheets and publish them on the website. By joining the different workcamps and projects, he/she will write articles about SJ Vietnam and ask for pictures from volunteers to publish on the website. The volunteer have to be involved enough in the organization to undertake this position. She/he will help SJ Vietnam to promote the volunteer work and the volunteering in Vietnam and abroad. SJV-L0912: ENGLISH TEACHERS FOR THE KIDS AT KIDS FUN SCHOOL AND COORDINATOR FOR A CREATIVE WORKSHOP FOR KIDS OF THE FISHER VILLAGE (Hanoi) 1 vol Kidsfun Hanoi is a Private School, a member of KIM international. It was established in May 2007. Kidsfun is a learning center enrolling students from 4 to 12 years old and providing extra-school courses such as English, French and Japanese language, as well as Art, Piano and Musical discovery, Ballet and Hip- Hop dance classes. All teachers at Kidsfun Hanoi are qualified and experienced. For KDF calls for an education made up of diversity, teachers here are from all over the world –Australia, United States, Singapore, France, Canada, Byelorussia, Belgium etc… The education design and the teaching are shared between Vietnamese and foreign teachers. We need volunteers for a period of 6 months. The duties of the foreign volunteer will be teaching English in KIDSFUN, and manage the organization of the workshop. At the end of 6 months, the total amount generated from the volunteer's activity will be donated to a specific fund, dedicated to the children of the Fisher Village. The volunteers should have the English language as a mother tongue. Objectives: The volunteers will help to run a creative workshop for the kids from the Fisher Village which aims to create an artistic performance in conjunction with a charity event jointly organized by KIDSFUN and SJ Vietnam. During the workshop, through a combination of drama, dance, songs and story-telling, kids will learn English, dance, songs and acting in an immersive and original way.
