CHILDREN? We have 2 children, Christa and Eric.
GRANDKIDS? We have 5 grandchildren. We all live within about 5 blocks of each other along with my parents.
Our grandchildren keep us young and very busy. We don't miss a ball game or special event.
RETIRED OR WORKING? I guess you would say I'm retired. I quit working about 12 years ago to care for our
grandchildren and have been doing that ever since. I enjoy it tremendously. Rich is a retired electrician after 38
years, but is now working for the Hunt Management Team on the new Lucas Oil Stadium for the Indianapolis
Colts. He, or maybe it was me, decided he was too young to retire.
WHAT’S FUN? What's fun for us is our FAMILY. Rich pulls garden tractors with our son and grandchildren.
Together they have built 6 pulling tractors. His latest project is taking the shell of a 1935 Chevy truck and turning
it into a street rod. He's just getting started but is very excited about it. I like to walk, work in the yard, plan family
gatherings, read, play cards, and scrapbook. We are getting ready to set out on a new adventure. We bought a
1972 Avion "silver twinkie" camp trailer to restore and try camping.

loved and appreciated growing up in Greensburg with all of you. I may not have known all of you personally or

memories of those times than bad and it was one hell of an exhilarating ride. Though I am only left with
memories now; they still bring a smile to my face and laughter to my heart on the worst of days. I thank each and
every one of you for sharing your lives with me and I hope to see more of you at the next reunion!!!

This document was compiled by Louie Alexander starting in June 2005, mostly sitting on his patio while drinking iced tea and
listening to KFOG radio. Any typos, misspelling, errors, misinterpretations, bad grammar, faulty punctuation and just plain
stupidity are his. He’s sorry and if you’ll call these things to his attention he will correct them with only minor grumbling.
Some reflections on pushing 60 years old
and facing a 40th high school reunion
                                                                                                      By Louie Alexander

Most days, right after breakfast, I take an hour-long, 12-mile bike ride. My route is very pleasant. The first seven miles
are on a paved, two-lane bike path alongside a creek that runs behind my house and the end of the ride is on quiet
residential streets that are a pleasant mixture of California stucco cottages and mini mansions. Because the weather in
Northern California is so unrelentingly pleasant I wear a comfortable pair of shorts and a t-shirt when I ride.

I always end my bike ride at a coffee shop where I sit and read for a half hour or so and drink a triple espresso and a 20-
ounce decaf drip coffee. As a daily regular I am on a first name basis with most of the staff, a good bunch in their late
teens and very early 20s. On my Sunday June 18 ride I wore a Grateful Dead t-shirt I bought about 10 years ago as part of
a Halloween costume.

This is one of my “good” t-shirts and I had not previously worn it to bike. The 20-
something shift manager at the coffee shop that day noticed the shirt and said “I didn‟t know
you were a Deadhead.” I told him I wasn‟t and explained why I had the shirt, although I did
admit to being a fan of the Dead. He thought for a minute and said something like “You
know, my grandpa told me that when he was a student at Stanford the Grateful Dead used to
play in his dorm for beer.” I nodded and smiled, took my cups and sat down to read
Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, a great book if you get a chance to pick it up. (Details at
                             http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743234413/qid=1119825863/sr=8-
                             1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-0580676-9452048?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 )

That was then But all the time I was thinking “Holy Jumping Glorioweski Batman I must be about as old
as this kid’s grandpa!!!!!!” And how did I feel about that, and how did I feel about being closer to 60 years old than 50,
and how did I feel about planning to attend my 40th high school reunion?

Well, to tell you the truth, I feel ok about all that. I don‟t mind being 57 years old (I was
second youngest in our class. Susan Balkwill Rust was youngest). Yes, parts of me hurt
some days and some times they hurt more later in the day than they do in the morning. But I
am happy to have the worries of a career behind me and to be old enough to have gained at
least some wisdom. My life is pretty good. I spend my days reading, working the
crosswords, biking, surfing the web, having lunch with my cronies (am I‟m old enough to
have cronies?) and hanging out with my wife and dog. Could it be better, of course, but it
could be a lot worse.

And from what I have read in the Reunion Information forms 58 of you sent in most of you
think life is pretty good. You are comfortable with the small things in life and you are
unfailingly optimistic. Here are some examples:

 Al Barnett’s WORDS OF WISDOM? Live for today. Tomorrow may never come. This is now

 Ric Gommel on WHAT’S FUN? Playing with granddaughters and boys—Niles and Frasier—the bassets.
 Christine Hawkins McEnhill on DO YOU FEEL YOUNG OR OLD? Hearty soul young!! But body‟s not
keeping up like it used to.
 Mary Sue Kanouse McGinn on DO YOU FEEL YOUNG OR OLD? I feel young. Life gets better the older
we get. I am blessed to have good health and I do my part to keep it that way.
 Sandy Links’ WORDS OF WISDOM: Don‟t worry, be happy!
 Marilyn Maynard Carter’s WORDS OF WISDOM: Busy people do not have the time to feel old! HA!
 David Miers on RETIRED OR WORKING? Working, too busy to retire, no desire to retire. Too much to do.
 Melodi Miers Alessi’s WORDS OF WISDOM: Growing old is mandatory—growing up is optional!
 Stephen Roszell’s WORDS OF WISDOM: Live every day as though it were your last. Do everything you can,
tomorrow you may not feel like it.
 Mike Storms’ WORDS OF WISDOM: You know it‟s going to be a great day when you wake up. So, go out
        and make a positive contribution!
 Teresa Tetrick Lange on DO YOU FEEL YOUNG OR OLD? Well, not old.
 Jim Werner’s WORDS OF WISDOM: Ctrl, alt, del. (Wouldn‟t we all like to reboot sometimes?)
 Bernie Zapfe on What’s Fun? “Bein‟ Alive.”

The years have not been without sadness. Jack Dance was killed in Vietnam. At least nine other classmates have died,
some tragically young. We grieve for these folks and hope their spouses, children and other family members take comfort
knowing that we remember the deceased and are sad they cannot join us in celebrating the last 40 years.

But beyond these losses we have reason to feel satisfied with our lives. Our class contributed mothers, fathers, teachers,
doctors, farmers, community leaders, business leaders, a nun and war heroes. We‟re the grown ups now and for the last
few decades we have made the world work. We have done at least as good a job as past generations.

Since I missed so many reunions I have often wondered what people were doing with their lives. All Barnett and John
Gauck have kept me up through the years but here are some statistics I developed from the Reunion Information forms I
have reviewed:

                                Statistics from Reunion Information forms
Forms # with # with # of # of Number Number
Received kids grandkids kids grandkids retired working
                             58 49 27 144 148 13 45
        % of
        respondents 100% 84% 47% 22% 78%

Based on the percentages above I projected the following for the whole class.

Projected statistics for the whole class
Total on # with # with # of # of Number Number
class roster kids grandkids kids grandkids retired working
             178 150 83 442 454 40 138

That‟s not bad folks. Take that number of kids and extend it for a few generations. As a group we have given the future a
pretty big vote of confidence.

Here‟s where we live:

                                             Where we live
                Indiana 123 Pennsylvania 2 Kentucky 1
Decatur County 76 North Carolina 2 Iowa 1

                Florida 7 Wisconsin 2 New Mexico 1
                Ohio 4 Arizona 2 Mississippi 1
                Georgia 4 Illinois 2 Alabama 1
                California 3 Texas 2

I am one of the GCHS Class of 1965 wanderers. I have lived in 7 states and have had about 20 different mailing addresses
in the last 40 years. I am very envious of the folks who were able to find happiness a few miles from where we all grew
up and have been able to maintain close lifetime relationships with family and friends. At the same time, it is interesting to
note that nearly 20 of us are in or near the Sun Belt where snow and cold are something we see on television.

There is one other thing I have observed over the last couple of months as I have pulled together our website
(http://gchsclassof1965.com/) and worked on the class roster and mailing list: This reunion is very important to
members of the GCHS Class of 1965. I have had many emails from people saying they are very excited about the
reunion. People have told me they are so excited they are losing sleep. At least two of us are coming from California—
2,000 miles plus. David Miers thinks we may have the largest attendance in many years.

Why is this reunion so important to people?

Let me speculate:
 For many this will be the first reunion we have attended, or the first one in a decade or three. We are naturally
curious to see how people turned out.
 Some of us are “stepping off the treadmill” or at least pushing the slow down button, on kids, jobs, and the other
busy stuff. While we were running at top speed we neglected old friends—the best kind—and this is a chance to
        get reacquainted.
 The other reunions people have attended over the past 40 years have been great fun. This is another chance to sit
in David‟s “barn” and eat, drink and yak.

A final comment: We have lost track of 15 6 of our classmates. This is sad and I would like to find these folks. I can
work the „net and some other public sources but if any of you have addresses for some of these folks I would appreciate
an email or call.
