1 INTRODUCING REMARKS

This guideline has been written with the intention to make your stay in Rennes even more
comfortable. All recommendations and information in it are based on the experience of
exchange students before you and it is supposed to supplement the official ESC manual.
Some contents of this guide are of rather general interests, whereas others are school or
country-specific. If you require further information or wish to make a contribution to this
guide, feel free to contact the respective authors as listed on page 10.

We wish you an unforgettable and life-changing stay in Rennes!

                                       “Vivre en intelligence!”
(Slogan of the City of Rennes, 2001)

2 PREPARING YOUR EXPEDITION

2.1 ARRANGEMENTS WITH YOUR SCHOOL

General Issues

If you wish to transfer courses from ESC Rennes back to your home university, it is a
smart move to make all arrangements while you are still at home. In the past, some
students handled these issues in the following way:

   1. Get the latest version your program’s manual either from your program director,
former exchange students or directly from ESC. Use last year’s version, unless the
one for your academic year is not ready in time.
   2. Make preliminary arrangements with the respective teachers at your school. Since
some people have a short memory a written form is recommendable.
   3. Any amendments of these arrangements are necessary due to changes in the
course program you can still handle this while being in Rennes.

School-specific Issues

Stategy Management I oder II Unternehmensführung (Ang. BWL)
Marketing Communication und Marketingmanagement mit 7 CP (Ang. BWL,
                International Marketing Management Marketing Wahlpflicht.)
International Consumer Behavior Seminar mit 4 CP (Ang BWL, Marketing Wahlpflicht.)

Professor Ron Collins is in charge of transfer credits for the University of Prince Edward Island
(UPEI). Students at UPEI cannot be considered for an exchange until they have completed the
second year review. If their marks are sufficient, they will be considered for an exchange. The
following courses have been transferred in the past:

International Business Strategy – International Business at UPEI
International Business Policy – Business Policy at UPEI
French Language/French Culture - transfers back as non business elective
dodatku zmienić wybór juŜ we Francji. Jest teŜ bardzo elastyczny przy przepisywaniu
przedmiotów– zatwierdza przedmioty, nawet, gdy mają mało wspólnego z polskim
zamiennikiem. Pozostałe przedmioty idą na czwarty poziom.

2.2 FINANCIAL ISSUES

2.2.1 Financial Support

General Issues

Submit your applications for financial support as soon as possible because the
respective authorities might take some time to handle them. See below for financial
     sources at your university.

situasjonen.

2.2.2 Banking

General Issues

Make sure that cash is available for you in France anytime. See below for some
     cheap ways to do so.

County-specific Issues

Country Remarks
If the student is only in France for a four month period, it is difficult to have a bank account set up
as was the case with myself and Jane Vessey. We found that VISA was the best option for cash
Canada
withdrawls. By maintaining a credit balance and using the VISA as a debit card, the student gets
the best rate on user fees.

(!) ( Credit Lyonnais ). Ebenso ist es nicht

2.2.3 Tuition Fees

General Issues

Tuition fees are due according to the type of exchange program between your school
and ESC Rennes. See below for details.

Students pay the same tuition as they would going to UPEI: $387.00 Canadian Dollars (per
             class)

2.3 ACCOMMODATION

In the past, the school offered help in finding a flat or an apartment. Generally
speaking, only acceptable accommodations were suggested by them. Some students
made bad experiences when they tried to find something on their own directly from
their home countries: the flats were over-expensive and/or in a lousy condition. Since
the number of students has highly increased in the last years, the school has more
problems in finding a place for everyone. You might try following strategies to get a
     flat:

        1. Contact the school ASAP (Patricia Fourel) and request their assistance.
Following information on your expectations towards a flat might be required:
size, monthly rent, type (flat or apartment) and distance to school. Ask former
exchange students for recommendations and contact the respective landlords
           directly (see lists below).
        2. Travel to Rennes at the beginning of the semester and find something on your
own but be prepared to stay at a youth hostel or a friend for while.
        3. Ask the landlord to support you in organising CAF. The CAF (Caisse
d'Allocations Familiales) is the agency that determines the level of social
benefits each resident in France is eligible to receive. For most assistants, the
only benefit from the CAF that would be applicable is the APL (Aide
Personalisée au Logement), which subsidizes rent. The amount you can
receive depends on several factors - your age, your location, the size of your
apartment, your previous income, your current income, etc. The CAF website
offers an online APL calculator (Simulation Logement) that is sometimes wildly
inaccurate. Do not rely on the figure it provides to make any budgetary
           decisions.

Some students made bad experience with the following landlords:

   Landlord or
                              Place Problem Year Student’s Name

2.4 HEALTH INSURANCE

General Issues

Make sure that you have all necessary documents to receive medical treatment in
France. See your insurer and the following list for details.

3 DURING YOUR STAY

3.1 ARRIVING IN RENNES

You might want to arrive in Rennes before the actual start of the semester in order to
settle down and to arrange general stuff. At the day of your arrival simply see your
program director and/or someone from the students’ organisation “COMEON” for
further assistance. Mostly “COMEON” is organising at the first weekend of the winter
          semester a Kennenlern event.

                                                                     5
3.2 STUDYING AT ESC

The ESC teaching style orientates at the Anglo-Saxon education system (case
studies, in-class assignments, group work, presentations etc.), which differs from
other systems such as the German (lectures, emphasis on literature etc.). While in
the Anglo-Saxon system a question tends to have multiple possible answers and the
student’s ability to construct is tested, there is often only one answer in other systems
and the student’s knowledge is tested.

Group work is required at ESC in the majority of courses. The ambition of students
might vary with her/his cultural background and objectives for the course. Therefore,

        1. Choose your group wisely according to your own objectives.
        2. Lots of patience as well as the willingness to communicate and to accept
differences in the personal working styles are required.

Often, deadlines are not as dead as they should be at ESC (or in France at all).
Instead, many students have seen several miraculous resurrections of deadlines in
     the past.

The marking system is as special as many things in France. Though it theoretically
ranges from 0 to 20 points, only marks from 8 to 17 are generally given. Most
universities take this into consideration for the transfer of credits and have special
transfer charts that determine the “exchange rates” for credits. Ask your program
     director for further information.

The computer rooms at school were a pure catastrophe in the past. If you possess a
notebook, you should definitely take it with you.

If you intent to write a dissertation to obtain your BA, MA or MBA at ESC, don’t take it
(too) easy. Though the life at school is relatively relaxed, some former exchange
students underestimated the actual workload of such a program and wasted time in
the beginning. Later they resigned from the program because they could not make
     that up.

Food at the ESC cafeteria is more or less acceptable, but cannot compete with the
offers of the university cafeterias nearby. In particular, these cafeterias are
     recommendable:

3.3 TELEPHONE

“It is definitely useful to get a telephone on your own when staying in France. The easiest
way is, if you have a mobile phone, to get a prepaid-card for your telephone. However, if
you use your telephone very frequently and especially when you’re staying for a year, it is
cheaper to get a contract (in France you can get contracts for only a year). The best place
to go, in my opinion is to go to the phone-shop in front of the shopping mall “Colombier”.
The staff speaks English and they have always been very helpful whenever there are
problems.

                                              6
If you want to have a fixed line for your apartment, you can get this at France Telecom at
Place de la Republique. You can also get an Internet-Account for your apartment there.
When you plan to get a fixed line, you should go to France Telecom with your ID-card,
your contract, and the number which you can find at the bottom of the door to your
apartment (each apartment has that number, so look for it!). Generally, the line will be
opened the same day.
Another very important advice: if you’re living in a shared flat and you want to share the
phone with your roommates, you should discuss everything with them before you get the
phone. That means, discuss who will pay the bill (that means, from whose account will the
money be withdrawn), make sure you plan how to get the money when your roommates
have left to their home-countries at the end of the semester. That means, get their
addresses, telephone-numbers etc. before you open the fixed-line. You should have a list
next to the phone, where everybody notes the numbers he/she has called. That’ll save a
lot of stress when you get the bill. And: most important, think twice if you want to be the
person that will pay the bill in the first place. Even if your roommates seem to be very
reliable and you are sure that they will pay you, you never know. There have been
students before you that had very bad experiences.
In case you don’t want to get a fixed line, you probably still want to call your friends and
family back home once in a while. In every tabac- and press-shop you can get telephone
cards with which you can call home cheaper (they are also working for mobile phones and
telephone booths). There are different cards for different countries in the world, so make
sure that you get the right card. If you use it in a telephone booth, this goes especially to
the girls, make sure that the booth is in a public place, especially at night!
If you want parents or friends to call you and you only have a cell phone, it might be very
expensive for them. But you can tell them the number of the telephone booth you are in
and they can call you there.”

3.4 FRENCH AND THE FRENCH

The communication outside school is characterised by the love of the French to their
mother tongue: it might be difficult to find English speaking people. Unless you have
learned French, you might face some communication problems e.g. at supermarkets,
at the hospital etc. However, there were generations of students before you that did
not speak French at all and survived nevertheless. You might consider two points:

        1. When someone speaks to you in French, it is often less embarrassing for both
sides to clearly admit that you do not speak French instead of saying nothing
           at all.
        2. In serious cases e.g. for a visit at the doctor you should seek the help of
           someone from the COMEON association.

If you want to learn French or improve your language skills the offers at school might
not meet your expectations. In the past, some students took extra course at the
     University of Rennes 2, Villejean.

3.5 INTERCONTINENTAL RELATIONSHIPS

                                             7
You could go to Rennes and meet the love of your life from the other side of the
globe. But before giving your heart away for eternity, listen to the advice of some
exchange students who have experienced the pleasures and pains of intercontinental
relationships: phone calls and flights are expensive and distant relationships are as
hard as the decision to leave your home country in order to be with your love.

3.6 FOR GIRLS

As a matter of fact, French men generally have a big heart and love all girls. Since
some black sheep can get fairly obtrusive you should avoid walking the streets of
   Rennes alone at night.

“Take a taxi instead of walking. But: in France you have to call a taxi instead of
waiting for it on the street, like it is usual in other countries. Make sure that you have
at least one telephone-number of a taxi agency saved in your cell-phone. And: the
taxi-agency doesn’t speak English in general. But as long as you can say your name,
the name of the street where you are and the time you want the taxi to come, there
   won’t be any problems.”

3.7 TRAVELLING

Rennes is an excellent starting point to travel the Bretagne or the Normandie. These
are some locations exchange students have visited before you.

Madrid, San Sebastian and Barcelona. It’s a magical place!
