					                          ANTICHOLINERGIC ALERT
Anticholinergic side effects may be more likely or more severe if the patient is receiving several
medications with anticholinergic effects.
                                    Medications With Anticholinergic Effects
Anti-nausea and Anti-dizziness:             Antihistamines: diphenhydramine           Urinary and GI Antispasmodics:

                                  ANTICHOLINERGIC ALERT
Patient                                        has received an order for                                            .
This medication is potentially inappropriate for use in elderly patients due to its anticholinergic effects.
Symptoms of anticholinergic effects include:
•   Blurred vision                                        •    Confusion, disorientation; memory impairment
•   Constipation                                          •    Dizziness when standing from bed or chair
•   Drowsiness or sedation                                •    Fever
•   Dry lips, mouth, or throat, which may lead to         •    Nausea
    speech difficulties, trouble with dentures, and       •    Nervousness, agitation, or anxiety
    chewing and swallowing problems                       •    Reddening of the face (flushing)
•   Rapid heart rate                                      •    Weakness
•   Trouble urinating or emptying bladder                 •    Hallucinations and delirium
Medications with anticholinergic effects may also cause, aggravate, or contribute to the following
RAP problems:       Delirium                    Mood State                 Dental Care
                           Cognitive Loss/Dementia        Behavioral Symptoms            Communication
                           Falls           ADLs           Urinary Incontinence           Visual Function
RECOMMENDATION
1. Monitor patient for signs of anticholinergic side effects.
2. Notify physician if any of the symptoms of anticholinergic effects occur.
