SOLAR COOKERS INTERNATIONAL / An NGO spreading solar cooking and water pasteurizing to benefit people and environments
Solar Cooker International (SCI)’s Response
to 5 August draft outcome document
Solar Cooker International (SCI) is a NGO based in Kenya and USA. It is an
international network of 700 independent solar cooker organizations worldwide.
SCI proposes SOLAR COOKERS AS A “QUICK WIN” IN THE
OUTCOME DOCUMENT OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
“WORLD SUMMIT”, 14-16 SEPTEMBER 2005
Proposed addition to Language for the Revised Draft Outcome Document
(dated 5.8. 2005), Paragraph 25 under the section entitled “Quick Wins”: (addition in bold)
25. We agree to support the establishment and implementation of country led “quick win”
initiatives consistent with long-term national development strategies so as to realize major
immediate progress towards development goals, including the Millennium Development
Goals, through such measures as
the free mass distribution of malaria bed nets and effective anti-malaria medicines, the
expansion of home-grown school meals programmes using locally produced food, the
elimination of user fees for primary education and health services, and comprehensive
access to low-cost solar cookers for water pasteurization and cooking.
Solar Cookers for health, gender equity, agricultural productivity and environments
and are now affordable for average families in all countries
In many counties, women and children often walk long distances to search for and gather wood for cooking fuel.
Solar cooking and water pasteurizing is smoke-free, saves time for productive agricultural work and consumes
no dung and crop residues needed by the soil. Simple solar cookers can be carried to the fields to cook lunch,
further increasing productivity. A new options for solar cooking/water pasteurization is a simple solar cookit,
now manufactured independently in about 25 countries for $3-5 US. They last for 2 years and save a ton of wood
per year.
Solar Cookers Support all Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Wide access to solar cookers that use free sunlight for cooking and for water pasteurizing is a
“quick win” – “inexpensive . . . short-term gains (that) save millions of lives” toward MDGs
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger: Solar cookers typically reduce fuel needs by 1/3
and pay for themselves in two months of fuel savings. . Wood is scarce for two billion people, and
about half live in sun-rich areas. The gentler temperatures of Cookits also preserve more nutrients.

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education: Long journeys to gather small brush, crop residues
and dung for cooking fuel take time from school attendance and studies. Solar cookers need only
sunlight, freeing children to spend more time in school.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women: Women and girls suffer extra health
hazards of gathering fuel and indoor smoke from cooking. Solar cookers improve health and allow more
time to pursue education, increase food production and work in income-generating activities.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality: Solar cookers reduce waterborne and smoke-related diseases, primary killers of
children,
Goal 5: Improve maternal health: Smoke from cooking fires is the major killer of young women in
developing countries and is also linked to low-birth weight and infant mortality.
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases: Caring for a sick family member and
orphans takes time away from livelihood activities. Solar cookers cook meals unattended, and are user-
friendly for children and the sick as well as for care-givers. Water pasteurization protects whole families.
Larger solar cookers can sanitize materials in rural clinics and households.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability: One-third of humanity has only wood, charcoal or poor
substitutes to cook daily meals. A solar cooker that can save about one ton of wood per year will reduce
carbon dioxide emissions by 1.8 tons per year.
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development: Solar cookers complement other programs.
