                                Humor Book Report

Many authors use elements of humor to keep their audiences interested in the story. For
your next Book Report, you will be responsible for reading a humorous novel, locating
examples of various types of humor within the text, and illustrating your favorite
humorous scene from your novel. Be sure that you have me “approve” the book before you
begin reading. I wouldn’t want you to get halfway through the book and realize it doesn’t
have any humorous parts.

Types of Humor:

   1. Exaggeration-- there is an obvious exaggeration of reality
example: The garbage can was the size of the Titanic.
   2. Word Play (portmanteau words)—combining two words to create a new word
example: chortle (a combination of chuckle and snort)
   3. Personification—giving human characteristics to a nonhuman object
example: The door jumped out of her way.
   4. Simile—a comparison using the words “like” or “as”
example: The hungry boy at like a horse.
   5. Metaphor—a comparison that doesn’t use the words “like” or “as"
example: The Iraq democracy is in its infancy.
   6. Allusion—reference to a well-known person, place, thing or event to explain
      something
example: The reference to Narcissy (Narcissus)that Joey used when
             talking about Byron.
   7. Irony—a statement/situation/event that is the opposite of what someone
      expects.
example: Byron and Kenny expect Grandma Sands to be big, ugly, and
mean. In reality she is short, tiny, and loving.
   8. Pun—a play on words that sound the same but have different meanings
             example: Whirlpool v. Wool Pooh
   9. Euphemism -- the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for
one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.
example: To pass away” is a euphemism for “to die.”
