With this site, we hope that pet lovers across the country (and also overseas) will share the great experience of owning a pet. No matter it’s a dog, cat, fish or hamster, they also deserve a profile and make friends with other pets rite? And the best part is, it’s FREE! I hope readers can now label Petster Magazine as Malaysian’s BEST FREE Pet Lifestyle Magazine :-) To support on that phrase, we have already a total of 867 subscribers to-date and we thank supporters like you guys a lot for making it happen! Our main kennel (main office) will soon be shifted to a better, bigger, newer environment and we are now currently busy with the renovation works. Issue 9 will not be successful without the help from fellow contributors who are willing to share their knowledge to the public. Oh ya, we will need a bigger manpower for Petster Magazine next year as we have bigger plans. If any of you readers have a brilliant plan to shout out, please throw me an email. Petster Magazine will work with if your plans are for the good to animals. As for our funders out there, many thanks for your proposals for the year 2009! PetFinder.my – A Child Growing Up
Animals matter to them!
It is amazing indeed how a staunch community of animal lovers has grown PetFinder.my into Malaysia’s largest Pet Adoption Portal within just a short period of 6 months. Founded by technopreneurs Andy Koh and Ezer Ratchaga in late April, PetFinder has effectively united people from all walks of life, for there lies a common goal shared by them – to put a roof over the heads of homeless animals and enhance their welfare. Within just half a year, PetFinder has successfully rehomed 400 animals, averaging over 2 pets a day. Not just dogs and cats have found their new loving families there, but even cute little rabbits, hamsters and birds as well! (Their system is now enhanced to support small furry animals, reptiles and fishes too – with a total of 500 recognized breeds!) In fact, PetFinder has become a favourite online destination for owners to showcase their beloved pets – over 700 of these animals have made their way into the portal, featuring their adorable faces to the community. PetFinder’s forum has matured into a cozy virtual home, where friendly animal lovers actively exchange views, experience and knowledge on pet issues and latest happenings in town. Interestingly, their forum also empowers participants with a mini social network, supporting blogging, photo albums, personal profiles and friend lists. PetFinder has established tight cooperation with SPCA
Selangor, PAWS, SPCA Penang, SPCA Johor and a number of independent rescue groups to rehome their pets. Their dedicated team of volunteers consistently visit the shelters to capture photos and details of the latest pets for online profiling. “Many of these shelters are pretty tight on human resources – we aim to build a sizable volunteer database which they can tap onto – whether it’s for fostering pets, assisting at the shelter or volunteering at events,” explained Ezer. A testimonial from Christine Chin, the Chairperson of SPCA Selangor described, “Since we tied up with PetFinder.my, we have received many calls and e-mails regarding the cats, dogs, pups and kittens we’ve put up for adoption online - and many of them have gone on to great, loving homes! We are truly grateful for this wonderful service provided, as it enables us to save more homeless animals.” PetFinder has been actively involved in roadshows and events to increase public awareness on pet adoption. Their supportive members and volunteers have played a crucial role in the success of these adoption drives, and more events are to be organised in the coming months. In conjunction with Hari Raya and their 6-month-old celebration, PetFinder members have also held a

fun-filled gathering at a hotel, with attractive lucky draw prizes sponsored by generous participants. “I believe that our community has set an excellent example to the public that we should appreciate and respect lives be it humans or animals; that it is definitely within the capabilities of us to improve the social conditions and well being of others; and that we can effectively unite the kind hearted people out there sharing similar visions, irregardless of our personal differences,” Andy observed. There is a long journey ahead, and may the hard work and perseverance of PetFinder’s community inspire more people to save the lives of homeless animals. And if you haven’t already done so, go join the big, happy PetFinder.my family now!

Joanne, pet groomer from Yuri Academy
talks about her experience in the pet grooming industry ...
For this month’s issue, Petster Magazine interviewed Joanne, a pet groomer in Yuri Academy, to learn about the experience in this industry. Her master, Yuri, also shared bit of her experience with her student in the academy. PM : Hello Joanne, nice to meet you. What makes you got involved in this industry? Joanne : It all happened when I really fell in love with dogs. I always wanted to help giving dogs a better life and I will try my best to contribute! Previously I was a beautician, but since the feeling of wanting to be around with dogs is so strong, I could not resist signing up for a career in this industry! And the most important thing is, I want to be a pet groomer is because dogs are the only creature in the world that will listen to you and they will be there for you! PM : Hmmm ... don’t really agree to that. Have you met Joseph (our sugar-glider)? He listens to us and will also be there for us ... but most of the time for food only la! Joanne : Ha! Ha! Ha! PM : Anyway, mind to talk about your first dog? Joanne : Poddle is the first dog to join my family. The reason why I chose a poddle is because their fur coat won’t shed and they are the easiest creature to train. PM : So, it’s obvious that you signed up for a pet grooming course at Yuri Academy right? How long have you been in this industry since then? Joanne : Yeap, it’s already been 5 months now. PM : Mind to share what have you learnt throughout this long period? Joanne : I learnt to understand dogs’ attitude and handle problematic dogs, which makes me somehow feel ‘closer’ to dogs. With the help and guidance from Yuri, it was a fun experience! PM : Have you ever plan of starting your own pet shop as expansion of the career? Joanne :Thought of it, planned to open one in Johor but have to wait till I fully master the art of grooming! PM : Any last advise to the readers and potential groomers out there? Joannr : Do not hesitate to sign up for a course because if you don’t, you will regret as you will lose a lifetime chance. PM : Ok, Yuri, when you started the grooming academy? Yuri : In the year 2002, the first school was established and endorsed by MKA. PM : What makes you changed the environment of the academy which was bigger and spacious now? Yuri : The increase of students and more topics for students such as dental scalling courses, aroma theraphy & spa latest subjects. PM : How is Joanne been doing since her first day with you until today? Yuri : Joanne came in with no knowledge about grroming at all, she only like dogs. But with the guidance from me, she was able to grow and became a professional groomer. Her progress was like a seed changing into a flower which needed lots of patience, and Joanne prove it! In between these 5 months, she is able to handle more than 100 dogs of 30 different breeds which happens to be the minimum requirement in my grooming academy. She also mastered the technics of handling of variety styles with different popular breeds in town. PM : And she’s hot too! Anyway, what are your future plans to make grooming a more exciting and educational course for students that are interested in grooming? Yuri : I will organise competitions which includes judges from different countries to give them the challenge to improve on their skills. At the same time, it’ll also motivate them to work harder. Furthermore, they are able to gain more knowledge with other shops about dog nutritional products. PM : Yuri, will you be opening another grooming academy? Yuri : Maybe in the future I will be opening another one but currently I will just stick to one which is located at Jalan Pudu. PM : Any advise for pet lovers ? Yuri : Be responsible to your pets. In whatever way, you choose them, not they choose you. You have to include them as your family members. So, please treat them like one and do not abandon them when they get old and sick. Take care of your buddy! They are your life companion.

Ask Our Vet
Liver Disease and Seizures in a Welsh Terrier
Question: My dog has a high bilirubin level. He has had seizures (most recently a few weeks ago) but has always had very minor ones where he can’t stop clicking his teeth together and they only last a few seconds, He has elevated bilirubin and elevated enzymes in his liver. I’m concerned about liver disease. Is this something that is treatable? Is this common in Welsh terriers? Answer: Treatment of liver disease depends upon the cause/ nature of the problem. Elevated (increased) liver enzymes in the blood can be from problems with the production/destruction of red blood cells, bile duct obstructions/gall bladder problems, congenital (present at birth) problems with the liver and it’s blood supply, or a problem with the liver organ itself (such as cancer, toxins, viral or bacterial infections, etc.).
Hair Loss
Question: I have a 5-yr old boxer w/hair loss over his hindquarters no scratching any fleas. Vet did a scrape and found nothing unusual, any ideas? Answer: Hair loss in dogs can have one (or several) of a list of causes ranging from a primary skin condition such as: bacterial infections, nutritional problems, etc., hormonal problems (such as hypothyroidism, or problems with other hormones such as estrogen or adrenal gland problems), allergies (inhaled, food or contact allergies), parasites (fleas, intestinal parasites, different forms of mange), fungal infections (ringworm, yeast, etc.), and the hair loss may not be related to a skin problem but an internal problem or even a problem with the dog’s immune system. Any hair loss should be diagnosed properly by your veterinarian so that an appropriate treatment plan can be implemented. Sometimes, your vet may suggest a skin biopsy and send it to a veterinary pathologist for an evaluation--or even work with or refer you to a veterinary dermatologist.
Cat with Ongoing Bladder Infection
Question: My 5-year old cat has had a bladder infection for a couple months. The vet gave her a shot and pills (two different medications to be given in succession over several weeks). She still has blood in her urine. He says it’s not unusual to last so long. I will keep giving her pills if it will help. What do you think? She seems happy and healthy otherwise but I don’t want her to suffer, or keep peeing everywhere. It is getting expensive. Answer: Some urinary tract infections can take awhile to treat. I would suggest having your veterinarian send in a urine sample, a culture and sensitivity test, and have a pathologist review the cells present in the urine for cancer. This test evaluates the urine for pH, the presence of urinary crystals, unusual cells (tumors), white blood cells (infection), and to see if the kidneys are working correctly to concentrate the urine. The culture and sensitivity test will show what bacteria are present in the urine and what antibiotic they are susceptible. This eliminates the need to try several antibiotics that may not be the exact one necessary to kill of the specific bacteria. X-rays or ultrasound might also be considered to rule out the presence of urinary stones and tumors that can also be causing the problem. Blood tests might also be necessary to evaluate other organ functions, bleeding disorders, etc. if no problems are found in the urinary tract. Having an animal means taking full responsibility for caring for that pet and that includes keeping it healthy and keeping it from suffering. Good luck!
Possible Pregnant Cat
Question: My cat got out of the house and I believe she was mated while she was out. However, a day after she was home she went into a less severe heat cycle. Is that possible if she is pregnant? Thanks!! Answer: Yes, it is possible that she could be pregnant. If she had been spayed, it would not be possible. This is why veterinarians recommend spaying and neutering as early as possible to prevent unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. Please have your pet spayed or neutered today! The bleeding could be from her cycle, or from trauma of being mated or an unrelated problem. Please take her in for your vet to examine her today!
Dogs Coughing & Off of Their Heartworm Medication
Question: Two of my labs have been hacking & coughing - they went without their heartworm medicine for a few months - and then we gave it to them without having them tested could this be a sign of heartworms? Answer: Yes, coughing is one of the most prominent signs of canine heartworm infection. Exercise intolerance, pale gums, trouble breathing, and weaknesses are also among the signs of heartworm infection. They can also be signs of other problems such as kennel cough, canine distemper virus, heart problems, and other diseases. Please take both of your dogs to your veterinarian to have them examined and tested for heartworms today. Early detection leads to early treatment and longer survival times.

The Dog’s Blog
Understand what dogs are ‘saying’ ...
Dogs have their own ways to send out messages!
It’s certainly not hard to figure out what your dog is telling you when it meets you at the door after you’ve been out for awhile–the joyful grin and madly wagging tail say it all. Most of us quickly learn our pet’s basic repertoire of overt language. But some of the signals dogs give are subtle or confusing. Being able to read a dog’s body language is especially necessary for urban dwellers. You not only want to be able to interpret your own pet correctly but, on the street, you want to be able to tell friend from foe. Learn more about what dogs are telling us with their body language, right here: 1. Hostile tail-wagging. Wagging tails don’t always mean friendliness. Say your dog meets a strange dog off the leash. The other dog approaches with great interest, ears alert and tail wagging. But this dog is giving out signals that spell hostility. The wagging tail is stiff and held high. The eyes have a hard expression and stare into your dog’s eyes. The dog’s hackles are raised. The animal’s whole posture signifies aggression. Even without growling or showing its teeth, a dog behaving like this has a chip on its shoulder. You should remove your dog from the scene quietly and quickly. 2. Friendly tail-wagging. A friendly or curious dog’s tail will be wagging in wide sweeps, hanging down. Its ears are down and its fur is smooth along its shoulders and back. The dog will not attempt to look you or your dog in the eye. It will go through the typical sniffing pattern with your dog–first nose to nose, then the genitals. Offer this dog the back of your fist to smell, and then you can probably pet it if you wish.
R
13
The Dog’s Blog
3. “Play” position. Let’s say your dog, after the usual preliminary sniffs, suddenly bounces down on its chest and elbows with its ears flattened and its rear end in the air. Unless the dog’s owner recognizes your dog’s body language, he or she may snatch the animal away protectively, misinterpreting your dog’s behavior as aggression. Your dog was giving off perfectly clear signals–”Let’s play“–yet was misunderstood. A dog that merely wants to play may also jump excitedly and bark, grin and wag its tail, run around in circles, and roll over. 4. Submissive postures. Sometimes a dog will lie on its belly with its ears flattened and the fur along its back flat and smooth. It looks away and may roll over onto its back. Is it afraid–a coward, a wimp? In most cases not–it may well only be showing submission. It is probably saying, “I am recognizing that you are the boss (pack leader).” Or it could be telling the other dog, “I’m not into power–I don’t want to fight.” A dog that avoids confrontation in this manner usually makes a good city dog. 5. Signs of fear. A frightened dog lowers its body, with its tail hanging low or tucked between its legs. Its head is down, its ears are laid back, and its hackles are usually raised. The dog may instinctively crouch close to the ground to protect its belly, and it may approach you and your dog in circles. Because a scared dog can quickly become a fear-biter, the best course is to stand still with your hands by your sides and refrain from looking the animal in the eye. Don’t corner it or turn your back on it, but speak to it in a soothing voice. Unless it gets over its fear, relaxes, and shows friendliness or submission, it’s best to move away quietly.

ChitChat Cat
Like it or not, mother cats and their kittens have a very special relationship. The relationship between a real mother and its kitten is always stronger compared to owners like us. There are things which we cannot provide or do to make ourselves complete mums. A newborn kitten is born blind. Its eyes normally do not open until it is 10 to 12 days old. Kittens’ ear canals, also, are not patent for a few days after birth, though these neonates still do have some ability to appreciate sounds. Mother Nature has provided these little creatures with a wonderful “rooting reflex,” which enables them to find the source of their food. Finding the “milk source” is accomplished with help from mom, who encourages her young kittens to feed a few minutes after birth by licking and nuzzling them and guiding them toward her nipples. The mother cat will also attend to her kittens’ toiletries, too, by licking their hindquarters to stimulate the release of urine and feces, and by cleaning up after them. It is imperative that newborn kittens have milk within 24 hours of birth. This first milk, called colostrum, is an antibody-rich substance that will protect the kittens from illness during their first weeks of life.
I know every cat lover knows the right way to care for a kitten but how many pet lovers know how a mother cat does the job?
How Mother Cats Take Care Of Kittens
Mother Should Care for the Kittens Care of newborn kittens should be left to the mother (called the queen) if at all possible. Keep human handling of newborns to a minimum, and discourage small children from handling the kittens until they are around 3 weeks old. Once a day, the kitten should be picked up and checked for purulent discharge (pus) coming from the eyes or nose. Clear mucous forming in the mouth area can be a sign of pneumonia. Other than a health check, leave the kittens to their mother. Over-handling will cause a nervous mother to carry the kittens by the neck (sometimes injuring them) as she tries to find them a secure haven. Research has shown that after the kittens reach 3 weeks of age, it is beneficial for them to receive a small amount of handling by humans. This beginning stage of the human relationship will produce a more emotionally stable, outgoing kitten that is better able to handle stress. Children should be closely supervised while handling kittens that are this young, however. Many people want to buy or adopt a 6-week-old kitten. This is a big mistake because kittens need more socialization time with their mothers and siblings than dogs and other animals. Until a kitten is 3 weeks old, the mother cares for every aspect of her kittens’ well being.. Following this infantile period, the mother nurses her kittens for shorter periods and encourages them to learn to walk and venture out of the nest. As the kittens’ mobility increases, many mother cats will invent a “call sign” to signal the bolder kittens that they have strayed too far. Three-week-old kittens cannot retract their claws, and kittens are not steady on their feet until they are around 4 weeks old. At 6 weeks of age, a marvelous transformation begins to take place. The kittens begin to run, jump, and climb. This is when the mother cat teaches them many important lessons. These lessons would be especially crucial if the kittens were to going to have to survive in the wild. First, the mother trains the kittens on the noble art of “taking care of business”, demonstrating to them how to cover up feces by scratching around in the litter. Then she teaches the rudiments of hunting. Domestic or pet cats will actually teach their kittens how to go for the kill, if prey is available. But even at 8 weeks of age, most kittens do not exhibit enough coordination to master a mouse hunt.

ChitChat Cat
Mother Gradually Weans Kittens During the 6- to 8-week age period, the mother cat will gradually wean her kittens onto solid food. This stage is very important for sibling play. The kittens will jump at and run from one another while simultaneously arching their backs and hissing. They practice their social and hunting skills by playing games. The mother usually moves to an elevated spot where she can find some peace and intervene when the playing gets too rough. Human Relationships at 12 Weeks By the time kittens are 10 to 12 weeks old, they have had enough sibling play and have also learned crucial lessons from mom. This is the age for a good human relationship to develop. Kittens should also have received one or two vaccinations by this time and will have pretty mature immune systems. While most cats are good mothers, being separated from their kittens does not upset the queen as much as one might expect. Moms are only upset for a day or two, following the loss of their kittens, and then they go back to their normal behavioral patterns. On the other hand, some kittens take the separation much harder. Three-month-old kittens may appear distressed and may eat less for a few days following separation from their mothers and siblings. However, successfully incorporating kittens into their new homes is less stressful at this age than if they were separated at a younger age.

Malaysian Participated In The Burbank & Hershey Pet Grooming Championship Judging
Mr. Gan from House Of Groomers Academy & Pet Salon was invited to judge at two of the largest international pet grooming championship, Groom and Kennel Expo Burbank, California and Groom Expo Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Traditionally, judges at large pet grooming shows in the Western continent are kept within the circle of very few renowned Americans. Inside the sprawling pet grooming circle, they, the judges are revered like demi-gods, their every utterance heeded the industry as law. These titans of the industry are lauded as the people who transformed the pet industry spinning into millions of dollars every year. One way or the other, the judges are the pet industry’s ‘law makers’ with themselves in the passed part of the winners’ circle. This time, however, one name appears within the circle of judges, a name odd to most Americans, all the way from Malaysia, Mr. Gan Wee Yet. The strong American dominance as judges at these large grooming events with the occasion European, Japanese and Malaysian participation made these events more exciting. Proudly Malaysian, Mr. Gan was invited to judge at two of the largest international pet grooming
championship, Groom and Kennel Expo Burbank, California and Groom Expo Hershey, Pennsylvania. This transcends the openness and willingness Americans as leaders of the industry in recognizing qualified representative from smaller country like Malaysia. The selection of judges goes through careful deliberation and only the captains of the industry are considered and chosen. Mr. Gan was selected based on his illustrious credentials. He is a National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG) with National Dog Groomers Association Of America, a world class conformation dog handler and breeder, a core judge with International Judges Association (IJA) and Malaysian Certified Master Groomer (MCMG) and serves as the president of Malaysian Pet Groomers Association (MPGA). At Groom and Kennel Expo, participants came from all around the world. Representatives from America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, Russia, Germany, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia made this international show a blast. Judges were invited from Europe, America and Malaysia. We would like to congratulate and thank Mr. Gan Wee Yet for his professional attitude and immaculate judgingship at Groom and Kennel Expo Burbank, California and Groom Expo Hershey, Pennsylvania, United States Of America. Thank you from International Judges Association, United States Of America.

Why pet beds are important?
iPet realized that the kitchen floor may not be the ideal, comfortable sleep surface that a pet deserves, many pet owners choose to buy pet beds and that is why they introduced a whole new range of pet beds to pet lovers. What is actually a pet bed? A pet bed is simply a bed for your pet. Pet beds differ from human beds in that they rest on the ground without a frame. Pet beds also lack sheets or blankets, but many have a coverlet that can be removed and laundered. iPet’s pet beds come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and materials. Being that comfort and suitability with one’s pet are the most important goals of a pet bed, some pet beds are shaped simply as a pillow while others have raised sides to provide an enclosure for the pet. “Cave” pet beds even have a soft arching top. It is important to note the size of the bed first when considering pet beds for your pet. If the bed is too small it won’t fully serve its purpose, and if it’s too large, your pet may not feel safe or relaxed. Only second to the size of the bed comes comfort. Most pet beds are made of foam varying in quality and density. Some foam materials may lend themselves to your pet’s comfort more than others. For instance, dogs with hip or joint problems can benefit from orthopedic pet beds. These beds use a special type of thick,

convoluted foam, specially suited to reduce pressure points and ensure optimal comfort. The covering of your pet bed should also be considered. Synthetic lambs wool may be more comfortable than vinyl, and cotton more comfortable than polyester. Check to see if the cover is removable for easing cleaning. Additionally, if your pet is going through a teething stage or tends to claw often, you may want to avoid certain materials that lend themselves to destruction. A fine example might be woolly material that can be easily pulled by teeth or claws, whereas fine-stitched cotton might be more resistant to snagging. In the process of purchasing a pet bed, make sure to focus again upon size, comfort and quality of foam. Bedding for your pet should be restful, cozy and hassle free. Now you know the reason why pet beds are important and most probably now is the time to get one for your beloved pet, no matter it is a dog or cat. Common Diseases in Pet Hamsters
Hamsters are pretty hardy pets, but are so small that injuries and illness can quickly become serious. If you notice any signs of illness in your hamster, you need to see a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Signs to look for include loss of appetite, inactivity, huddling in a corner, ruffled or unkempt coat, sneezing, discharge from the nose or eyes, wheezing, wetness around the tail, and diarrhea. Hair loss can be a symptom of skin disease or parasites, and also warrants a trip to the vet. These are the few common diseases that most possibly will kill your hamsters :Abscesses: These are pockets of infection, which can form from fairly minor breaks in the skin. Pus accumulates under the skin, sometimes forming a sizable lump (which may sometimes begin draining on its own). Abscesses can form from cuts or scratches on the skin and also in the cheek pouches if abrasive food material causes scratches in the lining. If a hamster continually looks like it has food in packed in its cheek pouches, there may be an abscess or an impacted cheek pouch present. Abscesses require veterinary attention for draining, flushing, and treatment with antibiotics. Respiratory Infections: Hamsters can get respiratory infections that can lead to pneumonia. Signs include sneezing, discharge from eyes or nose, wheezing and labored breathing. Occasional sneezing is not too worrisome, but if there is any loss of appetite, decreased activity, wheezing or difficulties breathing, immediate veterinary attention should be sought. Wet Tail: Also called proliferative ileitis and regional enteritis. This is a highly contagious disease, and most common in recently weaned hamsters. The cause is uncertain, but a bacteria called Campylobacter jejuni may be involved, and in some cases the disease is associated with stress, crowding, and diet changes. Affected hamsters may die very quickly, exhibiting signs such as diarrhea (causing wetness around the tail), lethargy, loss of appetite, and ruffled coat. Diarrhea: A number of infections can cause diarrhea (including but not limited to wet tail), along with diet changes and treatment with antibiotics. Over feeding vegetables and other fresh foods is a fairly common cause of diarrhea, but in this case there is usually no loss of appetite or decrease in activity. Dehydration is a real concern, so make sure the hamster is drinking if diarrhea occurs, and a veterinarian should be consulted. With diarrhea, withhold fresh foods for a few days and resume only if the diarrhea is completely resolved, and start back onto fresh foods slowly. Skin Diseases: Hamsters can be infested with a number of mites, which can be identified by a skin scraping by a vet and treated accordingly. Ringworm (actually a fungal infection) can also occur, and requires treatment by a vet. Allergies and skin infections can also occur. Hair loss is not all that unusual and can be seasonal or happen in older hamsters. If there is flakiness or redness of the skin or any lesions on the skin, or the hamster appears to be itchy and scratching more than usual, a vet should be seen. Hamsters do have scent glands on their flanks which can be dark and sometimes alarm owners. These occur on both sides of the body and do not appear irritated or bother the hamster. Cedar bedding can also cause skin irritation or allergies in addition to lung problems so should be avoided. Hibernation: If the room temperature is allowed to drop below normal room temperature, hamsters will go into a sort of hibernating state, where they are very still and breathe very slowly. Many owners panic and think their hamster is dying or dead, when might be a matter of the hamster getting too cold (for exapmle if the owners go away for the day and turn the thermostat down in the house). Rewarming the hamster should be sufficient.

Be A Scorpion King!
Scorpions can be treated as life partners too ...
There are approximately 1,500 different species of scorpions roaming the world right now. Scorpions live in a variety of habitats including rain forests, woodlands, deserts, grasslands and everywhere in between. Most scorpions prefer warmer tropical or subtropical climates. They prey upon a wide variety of animals and insects and all have the ability to sting. Even though a sting can hurt, very few scorpions are dangerous to humans. Scorpions as pets Keeping scorpions as pets is becoming increasingly more popular. They are relatively inexpensive to buy and require very little maintenance, much in the way of set up, or care. Scorpions can be easily found at pet shops, reptile shows and online dealers and breeders. If you are looking for an interesting and unique pet, a scorpion makes an excellent choice. A pet scorpion’s ideal home When setting up you new scorpion’s home security is a big issue to keep in mind. Scorpions are very adept at squeezing through small openings, agile enough to climb over objects, and strong enough to lift tops. A terrarium or fish tank with a locking screen top is the best place to house your pet. It will also prevent other pets from getting to your scorpion and possibly injuring it. A 10 gallon tank is the ideal size for one or two scorpions. If you are going to have a communal habitat with multiple scorpions a 15-20 gallon tank is what you need. Remember, even though some species, like the emperor scorpion, can have multiple tank mates, cannibalism is always a concern. Feeding your pet scorpion Feeding scorpions in captivity is simple. A healthy scorpion will eat almost anything small enough for it to grab. Gut loaded crickets and mealworms are an ideal source of food. Crickets and mealworms are readily available at pet stores and online and are inexpensive. Gut loading is the process of keeping the insects well fed so they pass along additional nutrients to your pet. You should feed your scorpion every few days to a week. If you have a communal tank make sure you provide enough prey for everyone to eat. If everyone is happy and well fed the chances of fighting or cannibalism is reduced. The amount of food in the scorpion’s diet should be monitored to ensure a healthy pet. A healthy scorpion is not too skinny or overly fat. The age of the animal is also a factor in how much it will eat. Young scorpions will eat almost continuously, since they are growing rapidly. Sometimes a scorpion will refuse to eat for long periods of time. Do not be alarmed. Healthy adult males have been known to take long fasts lasting months. A shallow, sturdy water dish should be provided. If you have a communal colony it is a good idea to provide more than one water dish. The dish should be no more than half an inch deep. Fresh water should be provided daily and the bowl cleaned regularly. Handling a pet scorpion Handling your scorpion is not recommended. There is a possibility of being stung or grabbed by the scorpions pincers. There is also a chance of losing, hurting or fatally injuring your pet scorpion. Scorpions can move quickly and will look for a dark place to hide. If it gets away it can run under furniture, air ducts, and other places where you may not be able to retrieve it. If a scorpion runs to the end of a table it won’t stop and will fall. A fall can easily injure or kill your pet. If you must handle or move a scorpion the safest way is to use a bowl or ladle and scoop up the animal. If you are stung or injured by accident while cleaning your pets cage clean the wound with antiseptic. Apply a cool washcloth or ice pack to the area at ten minute intervals. If you start having any type of severe reaction to a sting, seek out medical attention immediately.

Keeping Hill Mynahs
Your next closest talking buddy!
Mynah birds have long been a popular bird. In ancient Greece, the mynah was kept among the aristocracy as a pet, and in India, the mynah has been considered sacred for more than 2,000 years, and during a feast day, individual birds were carted through the city by oxen. Today, the mynah’s extraordinary talents as an imitator make him one of the most interesting of all cage birds. Described as the best talking bird in the world they can mimic the human voice and are able to talk in the same tones and clarity of speech as the voice they are mimicking, even outdoing the African grey parrot (which was featured last issue). Where to keep ‘em? In the wild, mynahs use a hopping method to move around on the ground, and in trees they move from branch to branch with sideways hops. In captivity mynahs need space to hop back and forth. The ideal cage should be wide, at least 3 to 4 feet by 2 feet deep by 2 feet high. Place the cage in a room where your mynah will have the most family contact, and keep it away from drafts – near a window where there is plenty of natural light but not direct sunlight is ideal. Place enough perches in the cage to allow their hopping. An assortment of perches of varying diameters provides exercise for your bird’s feet to prevent foot injuries and arthritis. Avoid perches made or rope or other cloth material as their toenails tend to get caught in them. Understand their diet The mynah is a member of the softbill group, named because they eat soft food. In the wild they are mainly frugivorous and feed on ripened fruit, especially figs. They also eat berries, seeds, shrubs and nectar from several kinds of flowers. Occasionally, they eat insects, termites they snatch with their beak right out of the air, and small lizards or other small animals. Companion mynahs do well on a diet of fruit and softbill/mynah food that is low in iron. They enjoy apples, bananas, pears, melons, peaches, guavas, mango, plums and papaya. Canned fruit can be substituted occasionally, but fresh fruits are better. It is best to avoid avocado, rhubarb and apple seeds, since they are toxic to most birds, and seeds of any kind because the mynah cannot digest them. Your mynah may also enjoy some vegetables, such as cooked potatoes (baked or mashed), cooked sweet potatoes and peas in limited amounts, corn, boiled rice and pasta. Some good protein sources include white meats such as chicken, fish, turkey and pork, chopped boiled egg, and beans. Mynahs need water available all of the time. They drink by dipping their bill into the water to scoop it up, then raise their head to let the water run down their gullet. You need to provide plenty of water so the bird can fill his bill.
Teach them to talk! If you want a talking mynah, it is best to purchase a hand-fed baby at 6 to 8 weeks old so that you can being bonding, interacting and speech training. A mynah begins to talk at three to four months of age. Begin training your bird early. Begin repeating the word “hello” as soon as you bring him home. He will soon begin repeating the sounds he hears. In the early stages, his voice may sound raspy and the words may sound broken, but this will improve with practice. Do not whistle to your bird; he may decide he likes whistling better than talking. Clean bird bird Mynahs love to bathe twice a day, so you should provide a dish large enough – filled about 2 inches – on the inside of the cage or placed on the floor. They splash around in the water, dunk their heads, and soak themselves to the skin. They dry themselves by shaking the water off and then running their beak through the feathers. They also shake their heads to get water out of the ears and sneeze to clear their nostrils. Mynahs usually bathe after they return to the cage from a time-out, especially if they have been handled.
