Good bye 2008 and konnichiwa 2009! What a great and challenging year we’d been through and hopefully things will turn out better this time. Anyway, if you guys are wondering what ‘PETSTER INC’ is all about, here’s the truth ~ 2009 is the year when everything becomes really organised for business expansions. One example, if you ever noticed our office address below, we have actually already shifted to a new office for a better working environment (bigger actually) and another major change for us would be more on the management side. To make things simple, since Petster Magazine has launched www.petsternetwork.com and also planned to expand the Petster franchise, we decided to put them all under one roof, which happens to be PETSTER INC. So guys, you’ll expect more things from us than just the magazine, mobile community and www.petsternetwork.com! And of course, we’ll still run our core business as usual, an event management company - LCM Events Sdn. Bhd. and we hope that our PETSTER INC department will continue contributing to the pet industry in this country. Many events have been planned for this year and I really hope to the support of all readers and advertisers to make them a success! Lastly, please feel free to shoot me an email if you guys have something to say alright? PETS4LIFE! - William Tan, Managing Editor This publication is not advice on your pet. R PETSTER INC Bites & Snacks BUKIT ANTARABANGSA TRAGEDY : SPCA SENDS RESCUE TEAM NEWS FROM SPCA SELANGOR SELANGOR, 6 DEC 2008 – SPCA Selangor were on hand at the site of the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide yesterday, responding to calls for help in rescuing and evacuating pets. The first calls came in at 9am, and four SPCA Animal Inspectors were immediately dispatched to assist pet-owners who needed to evacuate their homes immediately. The SPCA team assisted one resident to confine and transport her 51 cats to a nearby vet in Taman Melawati- one cat had escaped before the team arrived. They also rescued an adult male Labrador, who was left unattended in a house several doors down from the affected area. The inspectors lodged a police report regarding the removal of the dog at the Hulu Kelang Police Station. “We are appealing to the owner of this dog to come forward to reclaim him as soon as possible,” says Senior Inspector Cunera Kimlon. Another two cats were rescued, one returned to it’s owner and the other left in the care of a helpful neighbour. The emergency rescue team consisted of SPCA Animal Inspectors Cunera Kimlon, Kenny Thean, V. Murugan, visiting ex-RSPCA Inspector Glyn Roberts, and experienced animal rescuers Joanne and Leigh. SPCA urges members of the public to alert them immediately if they require assistance in evacuating their pets in the next few days, or if they come across any animals left behind in empty properties or found straying. “We will be setting up a cat refuge on site, where emergency workers can safely confine stray or injured animals that they’ve come across,” says Inspectorate consultant Glyn Roberts. “We urge pet owners to take their pets with them when they evacuate their homes. It is a distressing and traumatic time for all, don’t leave these helpless animals behind to fend for themselves,” he continues. Friends of the SPCA Committee also sponsored an excavator and 9 lorries to assist with the search and rescue efforts for survivors at the affected houses in the morning, and also sent in a lorry to distribute water at the area yesterday evening. The SPCA Animal Inspectors will be at the site today, handing out flyers and setting up a temporary refuge for abandoned and lost pets. Please call 016-9661810, 017-3805945, 017-3601097 or 016-9550578 for animalrelated emergencies in the affected areas. If you are interested in assisting the SPCA in fostering some of these animals, please call Ms Chelvy at 42565312 or 42535179 to register as an SPCA fosterer. Wow-Wow@Meow-Meow Pet Saloon Sdn Bhd (623184-T) Creature FEATURE Malaysian Idol 2004 Finalist Vic & Pets Icon’s Valerie talks about the best dog spa treatment! Da’ PetShopBoys visited Pets Icon to gain knowledge about the benefits of dog spa treatment as a feature for this month’s issue. We managed to catch Vic there as well, who is willing to share his thoughts, and also the beautiful dog spa guru, Valerie. PM : Hey, looks who’s here ... Vic right? I know you ... seen you on television many times. What are you doing here? Vic : I often send Zibrano for grooming at Pets Icon and I was introduced to this spa for my dog. It feels like human spa as you can see. Pets nowadays have better life compared to last time. PM : Ha ha, that’s very true! Mind if you could introduce yourself and tell us how you got involved with pet? Vic : Oh sure! For those who doesn’t know me, I am the finalist for Malaysian Idol 2004. After the competition I decided to move down to KL and pursue my dream as a singer and also to release my 1st album last year. Well, I am an artistic person before joining the singing competition and I was a hairstylist. Could you believe it? Anyway, I knew Nicholas and Valerie for quite some time already. When Nicholas opened this pet shop, I adopted a dog from him. Strangely enough, I used to have this phobia towards dogs but things have changed ever since I moved to KL. I named my dog Zibrano as his fur color surely looks exactly the same with the color Zibrano. Zibrano is 1 year old plus boy and I have only kept him for about ½ year but one thing for sure, our relationship is very close. PM : What makes you think that you’re a good and responsible dog owner? Singers are usually very busy with their tight schedule. Vic : Even with all my tight schedule I still want to give my dog the best that I could, as he is the only one I have in KL now (awww). Products in Pets Icon are quite good and they have what I need for my beloved dog. The environment here is magnificent, it is nice and warm. To me, it doesn’t look like a typical pet shop, it looks more like a well done spa and saloon centre. The grooming and spa services here are up to standard and the price charged are also reasonable. But as a responsible dog owner, the most important thing is my dog must feel comfortable with the spa done on him here. The fragrance and surroundings in the spa room relaxed my dog and I can see that he is not so stressful now. You should try out the spa therapy in Pets Icon, the result will amaze you. PM : Good idea, I’m sure William (our boss) won’t mind having a spa session here with Valerie even if he doesn’t have a dog, ha ha ha! Thanks a lot Vic for your input, very nice talking to you and remember to read our mag ya! Vic : Ha ha, sure. You guys are funny. PM : Hey Valerie, looks like we don’t need you introduce yourself anymore as you are a popular icon in the grooming industry here right? What’s actually behind the whole dog spa idea? Valerie : First of all. many people have the perception that dog spa is not a necessity to pets, but as a new lifestyle which they thought is just merely for business. But in fact, they are all wrong. In Malaysia, the aromatherapy spa is beneficial to pets and it is still rising, therefore many people have not really been properly introduced to this service yet. PM : Ok, so what’s the most important element of a great dog spa? Valerie : MASSAGE! Animals need massage to release tension in their muscles. For dogs, they feel tired like human, especially the hyperactive ones. The aroma therapy oil that we use can help to release tension and also to detoxify skin problems. R 08 Creature FEATURE PM : Ok, what other good reasons for dog owners to bring their beloved dogs here? Valerie : The spa not only helps the dog to release stress but also to help out dogs that have been went through shocking traumas in life. For example, at the state of fire, dogs tend to get tensed and will not be able to trust anyone even their owner anymore. To overcome this problem, we will try the massage them to bring back the confidence in them. Also, those with bone problem like a dog who recovered from a broken leg, we can build up the strength back to walk by massaging. We have experience treating such dogs and the result is satisfying with great progress! PM : Wow, that’s interesting! I’m sure fellow readers will soon learn the importance of such dog spa. Anyway, thanks Valerie and also Vic for sharing some time with us. Valeire & Vic : No problem! s Valerie with Sharon and Ray Stevens from Sharbelle Poodle winning poodles.. with top Show in Bangkok (Maltese) year 2007 . le Valerie with Kayla in San Diego Pood Specialty Show. R 10 Creature FEATURE What makes a ‘perfect’ dog spa? The reason why Pets Icon has the ‘perfect’ dog spa is because they uses the benefits of an aromatherapy system to your dog. The fragrance of the aromatic oil that rises into the air reduces daily stress, and relaxes your pet, which sooths your pet. Plus, with their great massage, the stimulus applied to the pressure points promotes blood circulation and also enhances metabolism. To make things better, with the usage of aromatheraphy massage gel, the complex amino acids in the gel restore the dryness of the coat. The finish is resilient and glossy, and has a comfortable smooth feeling. Every dog deserves the feeling of being pampered and also the feeling of being special by having a Pets Icon‘s dog spa day. Give your dogs the gift that shows you care. Benefits of Pets Icon’s dog spa: -Leave a fresh scent -Provide a healthy, shiny coat -To sooth and moisturize both paws and hands-alike -No harsh chemical irritation from all natural ingredients -Safe and healthy -Repel fleas and bugs -Pleasant and non-intrusive -Beneficial aromatherapy for dogs from essential oils They also provide packages for spa, massage and grooming. ‘Mix & Match’ these 3 pampering services for your pets at very attractive rates. They are also the one and only qualified and spa & massasge professional in town, certified from America as ‘aromathologist’ and ‘animal massue’ concentrating in dogs, cats and horses. Not only that, they also help them to overcome traumas. For example, if a dog broke his/ her arm, he/she will still walk with only 3 legs after a proper surgery. At this time, spa and massage therapy benefits pets with such luck. They have testimonials to prove the success from this therapy. This month’s promotions: Full grooming for 5 times and get a spa or massage for FREE! Very attractive price package for trial full grooming + spa! All the great relaxing servicesmentioned above is provided by Valerie Khoo, NCMG, Cert. Aromathologist, Animal Massue from Pets Icon. R 11 Ask Our Vet Question: How can I deal with my cat shedding hair? Answer: Cats will naturally shed - it’s part of a natural cycle that occurred twice a year, in spring to get rid of their winter coat and also once in fall to get ready to grow in the thicker winter coat. It’s natural and it’s healthy, and you should be worried if your cat stops doing it for no reason - sick cats will generally not shed fur. With climate control and most cats living indoors, they will shed yearround (it messes around with their natural twice a year “rhythm” to shedding). If your cat is an outdoor cat, it will probably stick to the cycle. Note that this is not a recommendation to let your cat outside to stop shedding - that’s a bad idea and will reduce the average life span of a cat dramatically because of all the potential to get hurt. So what do you do to keep your cat from shedding hair everywhere? You need to groom them with a comb or a brush regularly - it will get most of the loose fur out, and it’s actually got a number of other benefits for the cat. It reduces the number of hairballs (which is great for you because you don’t have to clean them up). It’s also good for bonding purposes - cats usually enjoy it, and if they don’t it’s probably because you have an abrasive comb/brush. There are also some random products that claim to reduce shedding - fish-based diets, sprays for the coat, etc. Personally, I think the grooming is the best approach. 4) Infection. Yeast or fungal infections in the pad can cause cracking, and your vet would need to give the dog a prescription to deal with this. 5) Nutritional deficiencies. If you are feeding the dog the wrong diet this could be the cause, but also some breeds are susceptible to these problems because of genetic issues. Question: How do I stop my dog from jumping the fence? Answer: The first and obvious thing you can do is fortify the fence to make it higher. You don’t have to redo the whole thing, but if you add on an extension of a couple of feet, in most cases it will be too high for the dog to jump. But a lot of people won’t want to do that for aesthetic reasons. A second option is to get an invisible fence installed. This will work for many dogs, and even if you decide to get rid of it later, if you line it just inside the fence perimeter it will teach the dog not to go near the actual fence. Third, you can try training. This mainly consists of punishing the dog immediately after it jumps over the fence. You can’t wait until the dog escapes, get it back, and then punish it - their memories don’t go back that far and they won’t know what you’re punishing them for. Usually this kind of training consists of “rigging” the escape. An accomplice goes outside the fence to create an attraction for the dog to jump over and escape. When the dog approaches the fence, you use a water hose to spray it (or some other similar punishment and scolding that it won’t like). Do it when the dog approaches the fence, don’t wait for it to actually get over it. Fourth, you could get a dog tie out and let the dog stay in the yard without being completely free to move around. Fifth, exercising your dog more frequently can eliminate the desire to escape. The same thing goes for neutering, as many dogs attempt to escape looking for a mate. Eliminating the underlying cause for escapes is often the most effective way to deal with it. Question: Why does my dog have cracks on its paws? Answer: One of the more persistent injuries a dog can get is a crack or cut on the pads of it’s feet. These can take a long time to heal up, mainly because the dog will keep walking on them and tearing at the pads. You need to be aware that there are several potential causes, including diseases that cause what looks like a physical injury. Potential Causes of Injuries to Foot Pads on a Dog: 1) A cut or scrape. This is what pretty much everyone assumes they are - the dog steps on something sharp or gets physically injured somehow. If this is the cause, you need to get it bandaged and keep the dog off it’s feet. 2) Chewing on the paws. Sometimes dogs will step in stuff that is irritating their skin, most often chemicals you are spraying on your yard or your floor. The chemicals don’t injure the paws, but they make the dog bite them, which causes cuts and cracks. Removing the source of the chemicals is the treatment here. 3) Hyperkeratosis - This is a disease in which the dog’s skin begins growing keratin way too quickly, causing the cracks. It’s also called canine foot pad disease. Keratin is the hard stuff in the skin that makes the pads different from the regular parts of the dog’s skin. It toughens them up so the dog can step on rough surfaces without being hurt. You treat the dog with creams in most cases, which eat away at the excess keratin. Sometimes vets will surgically remove it as well. Question: What is a dog’s or cat’s normal temperature? Answer: Cats and dogs have a higher body temperature than ours, which is why they sometimes feel “hot” to the touch. Their normal body temperature is 100 - 102.8 Fahrenheit or 38.5 + or - 1 degree Celcius. The best way to see if your pet is running a fever is to take his temperature with a rectal thermometer. If you notice that your pet’s temperature is above normal, you should contact a veterinarian immediately. The pain was so severe when he would try to get up that he would cry out. No medication seemed to help. I thought I was facing a tough decision on the quality of his life. He was eating a well-known premium diet, but there were chemical preservatives in it. I started my dog on Regal Adult Bites and in just 3 weeks all of his pain disappeared. He began running and rolling and leaping like he did many years ago. After two months, friends began to ask me what I was doing to his coat. His hair had gone from dry and coarse to lustrous and flowing. My wonderful dog’s life was extended another 2 1/2 years because of your Regal Pet Food. R 19 Don’t make smelly poo-poo an offence to them ... Instead, give them EcoBioPet which will help them to answer the call of nature confidently & comfortably! “I fed Oreo 0.5 gram of EcoBioPet to 50 grams of her food as recommended. Oreo eats twice a day. Within 10 days, I noticed that there is no more foul smell from her poo! Amazing!” - Ms. SH Ching, Bank Officer, owner of 17 months old Shetland, Oreo, January 2008, Singapore. “Because the pomeranian is very small, the amount fed was usually ½ teaspoon. The improvement in appetite was noticed about 2 months after starting on Eco-BioPet. The dog does not have a problem of smelly stools or body odor, so the effect was more of better appetite.” - Ms Magdalene Ong, Civil Servant, owner of a 3 years old pomeranian, May 2008, Singapore. What Is Eco-BioPet ? Eco-BioPet is a composition of micro-organisms from the soil of Gunma Region in Japan. Kawashima Co. Ltd. of Japan has a unique technology of extracting this group of micro-organisms. How Does it Works? Once taken by the animal, it will activate enterobacteria and intestinal activities to promote the animal’s growth and health. Is this really true or just a myth? And if it’s true, how do you actually introduce the dog to them without any blood drawn? You may not have to get rid of the family dog when your newborn comes home if you are concerned about asthma risks, according to the results of a new study. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health studied 253 children for the relationship between pet ownership and asthma diagnosis in children with and without dogs. Parents who owned dogs when their babies were born were less likely than non-dog owning families to have children who developed asthma by the time they were six years old. Dog-owning 3-year-olds were also less likely to have asthma by age six than children without dogs, according to the study. Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the body’s bronchial (airway) tissues that afflicts millions of people in the United States. People with asthma experience shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. These symptoms intensify during an asthma attack, which occurs when triggered by allergens (i.e., pollen, dust, pet dander). The researchers found that owning a cat at birth and at three years of age did not significantly relate to whether the child would develop asthma by age six. They concluded that exposure to dogs early in life may reduce asthma risk. Dog allergies -- caused by dog dander, skin, saliva and urine -- are a common form of allergy in the United States. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), nearly 10 million pet owners are allergic to their animals. Dogs can cause allergic reactions in people with allergies specific to dogs and in people with allergic asthma, a condition in which asthma symptoms are triggered by an allergic reaction. The research was presented in February last year during the annual meeting of AAAAI in San Diego. So, what do you think? Introducing The Dog: Three types of dog need this special care. Dogs that have already told you that they do not like children are one type. These are often nervous, fearful dogs with little self-confidence. A second personality type is the dog that is aggressive toward all strangers that come to the home. These dogs are assertive and are often owned by submissive owners who let the dog make its own decisions. The third type of dog is the one that pounces on smaller furry creatures, chases cats and barks at large animals. These are predatory personalities. If your dog fits into one of these three groups it is a good precaution to keep it on a leash and muzzled when it is near the baby until you know for sure that it will not harm the child. If you are fortunate, your dog does not fit into any of these three categories. Anyway, here are some suggestions for introducing your normal dog to your new child: a) If you want your pet to be under control when it is with the baby you need for it to be under control at all times. This means starting long before the baby comes by teaching your dog to obey commands. Enrol in a dog training camp or school. Teach your dog to sit, roll over, heel and lay down on command. This lets the dog know that you are in charge of decision making. You may want to read my article on dealing with aggression in dogs for more information. One of the most powerful commands is to train your dog not to eat a treat until you give the OK. This is an extremely difficult task for a pet and by the time it masters it I will leave you thoroughly in charge of all important matters in your household. Another strong command is to sit patiently even when activity is occurring in the room. Begin by standing at the dog’s side and eventually get to a point where you can leave the room and the dog will continue to sit. Whenever I train dogs to these commands I use the positive reinforcement of a pat on the head, a kind word and a treat instead of punishment. Practice the stay command in the room you have set aside for the baby. Some authorities suggest you put a doll in the crib and fuss over it as if it were the baby. You can do this, but I think dogs are quite intelligent enough to know the difference. Letting the dog become accustomed to the smell of warm formula is probably a good idea. b) It is a good idea to keep your dog at a friend’s house or kennel for a week or two when you bring the baby home. You will have your hands full with your infant and will not have the time to pet and reassure your dog or prevent jealousy. When you do bring your dog home he will be overwhelmed by all the new odors and be more inclined to cooperate. When you bring the dog back home first let it sniff some of the baby’s used diapers. Then praise and reward the pet. Once it has calmed down introduce it to within seeing distance of the baby but on a leash. Then take the pet into the living room and praise and reward it some more. I would do this for several days until it becomes routine. When you actually allow the dog to sniff the baby be sure to have several people present to help restrain the dog if it becomes necessary. Keep the dog on a leash for better control. If you feel the dog tense up discontinue the introduction and try later. If you sense any degree of aggression or predatory emotion in the dog have it wear a muzzle. For a dog to adjust to the presence of a bay it needs repetitive exposure to the by in a happy situation so the dog associates the baby with pleasure. Lavishly praise your pet and give him treats during this training period. It is always better to be overly safe than foolishly sorry. Place a child gate in front of your child’s room to keep the dog away from the baby when you are not present. If the gate is too low, purchase a second gate and place it above the first. You can gradually relax your supervision as you come to trust your pet. The more inattentive to the baby the dog becomes the better. There is no way for me to tell you when this will occur. All I can tell you is that you will sense it when the right time comes. R 21 ChitChat Cat Make the pussy listen to you ... How to Leash Train a Cat Cats are notoriously curious animals who love the great outdoors, but letting them wander isn’t always an option. If you live in an area with lots of traffic or a local population of feral cats, both can pose great danger to your pet. If you’re willing to provide supervision, then walking your cat can be a good solution. Since cats are often less cooperative than dogs, however, you’re going to need to invest some time into training your independent feline before escorting it outside. How? 1. Buy a soft buckle collar or harness made specifically for felines. Buy a separate lightweight leash approximately 6’ long, with a loop handle. Placing the loop over your wrist will help to prevent the dropping of the leash. 2. Trim your cat’s claws. 3. Begin training before your cat’s regular meal time, when they’re most receptive. If you feed your cat “free choice”, take up its food for several hours prior to the training session, so she is hungry. 4. Allow the cat to smell the collar/harness. 5. Start in one safe, small room, with delicious tasty treats your cat loves. Put the collar or harness on the cat. (A small area will prevent a panicking cat from becoming lost in the house wearing its collar or harness for the first time.) The cat will probably do one of two things: sit very still, crouching low to the floor, or squirm in a frantic panic. Immediately give your cat his regular meal. Stay calm and don’t interfere unless the cat seems like it will hurt itself. Repeat this several times a day so that it associates the sensation of the collar/harness with good things. Allow the cat to walk (and lounge) freely in the harness for a time when you can supervise the cat, then take it off. 6. Repeat this process for however long it takes for your cat to feel comfortable. 7. Set a path through your home to walk after your cat gets used to the harness. This is essential if your cat has never been outside and you want to train it to walk with you before exposing it to the outdoors. 8. Clip on the leash. If you are using a harness, this is also a good time to watch and make sure the cat can’t squeeze out of its harness -- they can be incredible contortionists. A well fitted collar is safer than a harness, as a cat cannot back out of a collar. 9. Let you cat walk around your home, following your cat as you hold the leash. Frequently reward your cat with delicious treats. 10. If you plan to walk your cat off your property, choose a route on which to walk the cat outside, and walk it solo for the first few times to see if it’s also a route used by dog walkers. Being confronted with a dog may cause your cat to panic and escape, so it’s important to try to prevent this. You can also prepare a cat carrier to bring on your walks and so that you can secure the cat in it if you see a dog coming your way. A pillow case also makes a great emergency cat carrier. Carry human breath spray with you. Dogs and other cats hate this safe but strong smelling spray. 11. Leave the front door open and start making your walks gradually further in that direction. Guide your cat, (don’t pull), to the door. 12. Take your cat outside for 5 minute increments, 3-5 times a day, gradually increasing the amount of time outside. Call the cat as you walk it and be consistent in where you walk the cat each time. Eventually the cat will become familiar with the process, but you must be patient. 13. Give the cat treats during your walk and as soon as you get home, and eventually your cat will love going for a walk. R 22 Our Furry Friends Gerbils: The Right Animal for You? One of the famous pocket pets as a companion ... Gerbils are inquisitive, friendly animals that rarely bite, Gerbils make good pets for children. They are easy to look after, hygienic, and sociable. They also love digging! Unlike hamsters, Gerbils should not be kept on their own but in same sex pairs or groups. They generally live for 3 to 5 years and are most active during the evening and at night. There are a number of species of Gerbil; however the Mongolian Gerbil is the one to keep as a pet. Unlike Rats or Mice, Gerbils have hairy tails. Here are a few guidelines for those who seeks for such tiny companion:Housing Gerbils in the wild live underground in tunnels, so you should aim to create a similar environment for your domestic pet. A purpose-built Gerbil cage is the best option, although a glass aquarium can be used, provided a wire mesh lid is fitted to allow ventilation. Your Gerbil’s home should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from draughts. Shredded paper nesting material should be provided, along with wood shavings or sawdust. As Gerbils are naturally desert creatures, they use food and water efficiently and therefore produce little waste. The cage should be cleaned once a week - a small litter tray can be provided to help keep a hygienic environment for your Gerbil. Feeding A good quality Gerbil mix makes an ideal core diet for your pet. This can be supplemented with small pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables. Be aware that Gerbils hoard food, so don’t give them too many green vegetables (which can rot). Fresh drinking water should always be available, usually in a gravity bottle although a small heavy bowl can be used instead. Like all rodents, a Gerbil’s front teeth grow continuously, so provide them with something to gnaw on. You should never feed your Gerbil potatoes, rhubarb, or tomato leaves. Looking after your Gerbil a) Exercise & Entertainment Most active during the evening and night, Gerbils enjoy cardboard tubes to run through and chew on, and they love to dig and burrow so provide plenty of bedding for this purpose. They also enjoy climbing – a fruit branch is ideal. b) Handling: Gerbils usually enjoy human contact but can occasionally be timid. If this is the case, hold your hand in the cage without touching your Gerbil – this allows it to get used to your scent – then gently stroke your pet. You can pick up a Gerbil by placing your hand gently around its body behind the front legs whilst supporting the hindquarters with your other hand. Be warned though – they can move and jump surprisingly quickly, so always handle them above a soft surface that won’t harm them should they fall. Never pick up a Gerbil by its tail as serious injury can result. c) Breeding: Gerbils can breed extremely quickly from 3 months old, producing a litter every 24 days! You should therefore seek expert advice before considering keeping a breeding pair and only if you’re certain you can find good homes for the babies. ZAP! Pe ey n earth? Tank Residents Siamese Fighting Fish These creatures are easy to keep and care for! QUICK FACTS: Siam is the old name for Thailand. These fish live in Thailand and nearby countries. These fish can breathe air so can live in polluted water. The male fish fight each other. Males are colourful, females are not. Habitat and Distribution (where they are found) Siamese fighting fish are found in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand and Cambodia. They live in shallow, overgrown waters including irrigation channels and flooded rice fields. Shallow water stays warm, up to 30°C. These fish do not live in cold water. Body and Behaviours Siamese Fighting fish are part of a fish family that all have a special breathing organ, called labyrinth, which they can use to absorb air. Labyrinth fishes that are prevented from taking air will drown. Because of their ability to breath air, Labyrinth fish can survive in polluted water that does not have very much oxygen. Life Cycle Male Siamese fighting fish build a nest of bubbles among plant leaves. To make the bubbles, the fish takes up air in its mouth, coats it with saliva (spit), and spits out the bubbles, which stick together on the surface of the water. After this, he shows off to attract a female below the nest. They swim around together, and she releases eggs. He fertilises them with liquid from his body, which means that baby fish will grow inside the eggs. As the eggs float to the bottom, the male catches them in his mouth and spits them into the bubble nest. He then watches over the nest, protecting the eggs from being eaten and putting any fallen eggs back into the nest. When the eggs hatch, the little fish swim away. Sadly, the male fish, after all that work looking after the eggs, sometimes eats the baby fish. Handm E ade Keeping them as pets Siamese fighting fish are popular pets. The males are aggressive. They’ll sometimes chase and kill the female if she sticks around, and they even attack their own reflection in a mirror. The males do not get along well with each other. You can only keep more than one male if you have a very large tank so they have enough space to form their own territories. In the wild, males have plenty of room to stay out of each other’s way. In captivity, however, that aggressiveness is why the males are kept in separate tanks or in a large one with barriers. The aquarium should be thickly planted and well lighted. It should be kept warm, between 23ºC and 30ºC. Floating plants will allow nest building. R 25 Birdie T alk Want an owl for a pet? Think twice before you do that ... Many people think it would be fun to have an owl for a pet, especially after watching the Harry Potter movies or reading the books. How many times do you see Harry wiping up owl poop? Gutting dead animals? Do you see Hedwig having a conniption from being in such a small cage? Do the Weasleys take Errol to the veterinarian? Remember--that is FANTASY, not real life. It is illegal to keep owls without a special permit in most countries. Some countries issue permits to individuals to keep owls after necessary training has been received and proper facilities have been constructed. TOP 10 REASONS YOU DON’T WANT AN OWL FOR A PET 10. It’s not very easy to take a vacation. After all, you can’t just take an owl with you! And if you leave the owl at home, who’s going to feed it and take care of it? If it’s strongly attached to you (which most human-imprinted owls will be), your absence will be hard on the bird, and it will let you know it when you return. Owls don’t like changes, so don’t expect that you can just give your owl to someone else if you don’t like it - that would be VERY hard on the owl. 9. Owls can be really hard on knick-knacks and woodwork. They have a natural instinct to “kill” things and then tear them up. This leads to shredded and broken knick-knacks, torn-up towels and socks, unstuffed stuffed animals, and just about anything else you can think of (and many things you wouldn’t have ever thought of!) Anything wooden that an owl perches on will have its finish removed bit by bit over the years just from the normal gentle pressure of the talons. This does nothing to increase the value of your home! 8. Mating season involves a lot of all-night racket! Are you willing to put up with the all-night hooting or tooting of an owl during mating season? If it’s a human-imprinted owl, all that noise will likely be directed at YOU. 7. Owls don’t like to be petted and cuddled. You have to do things on their terms, and traditional “petting” doesn’t fit into the owl scheme of things. If you want an animal you can pet and cuddle, get a cat or a dog. 6. Owls do like to play, but their play can be rough. Remember, a human-imprinted owl is going to consider you one of its own kind, and will look to you for all its companionship needs, including play. Try playing with something that has eight sharp talons and a sharp beak and you have a recipe for a lot of cuts, bruises and scratches, even though they are unintentional on the owl’s part. 5. Poop, poop, and more poop! Owls can’t be litter trained, so they just poop wherever they happen to be. Even if you have a large amount of your house covered with floor protectors (like we do), there is still a heck of a lot of cleaning to be done on a very regular basis. Even if you clean it up every day you’re still likely to step in some poop in the middle of the night when you get up to go to the bathroom. Whether you’re wearing shoes, socks, or are barefoot, I can attest to the fact that it’s gross no matter how you step in it! Then there’s ceca. Owls have two dead-end sacs at the end of their intestines called ceca. They empty these sacs once per day, and it comes out as a hideously smelly, brown, tarry poop that stains terribly. 26 4. Feathers and pellets show up in the darndest places. Owls molt nearly all of their feathers every year. That’s thousands of feathers. If you think you can keep them all cleaned up, you’re dreaming! If you’ve never stepped on a vertebra with bare feet you won’t fully appreciate the pellet situation either. Owls throw up their pellet of fur and bones once each day, wherever they happen to be. They smell and are covered with mucous when they first come out. Some pellets have very little fur and basically come out as an unformed pile of bones. Try keeping those cleaned up! 3. FOOD! First of all, you need a steady stream of whole, adult animals to feed an owl. Where will you get them? How expensive will they be? Then you have to commit part of your freezer (or a whole freezer) to storage of these dead animals. Then you get to thaw one out every night the rest of your life (or for as long as you have an owl.) For many owls you have to cut them open and remove the stomach, intestines, and liver. If you don’t you’ll find yourself peeling intestines and liver off the floor and walls of your home. Then there are the leftovers. Owls have an instinct to cache, or hide, their leftover food. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the caches and you have to wait a few days until it starts stinking to find it. 2. You can’t just put an owl in an outdoor pen and ignore it most of the time. Many captive owls are imprinted on humans (think they are humans), so they will want (and demand) human attention. If they don’t get it, they may sit out there and do begging calls until they get the attention they are after. They also need to be flown regularly for exercise (if they aren’t permanently injured.) This takes time and training. 1. You need to know a lot about owls before you get one. You need to know things like what types of perching surfaces they need to avoid chances of foot infections, which foods to avoid feeding them, how to tell when they are sick (plus you need a veterinarian who knows how to care for owls), what type of regular maintenance needs to be done on talons and beaks, and a million other things. There is a lot to know since you’re 100% responsible for every need of a captive owl. R You need to be committed (in more ways than one!) to honestly consider yourself willing and capable of taking on such an enormous responsibility. After all, the smaller owls can easily live over 10 years, and the larger owls can make it to 50 years or more! PET search* *Formerly known as Let’s Adopt!
