Greetings everyone, and with just a blink of an eye, here comes our 7th magazine. So many things to do on the desk but so little time to actually do it! The pet industry here seems to be growing so rapidly and it goes the same with Petster Magazine’s workload. Ok, in addition to our network, we introduce you ... (drumroll) the all new Petster Network’s Mobile Community! You can now send interesting news / photos or even announce lost pet to us via your mobile phone and we’ll forward them to the rest of the members in the community. Isn’t that great? And the best part is, we’re awarding RM50 cash if the stuff you sent in is selected to be published in the magazine! - SMS ‘ON PETSTER’ to 22700 (MAXIS users only for now) to join now. Kids really do love pets, especially my twin cousin sisters. Ever since the 1st day they came down from China for a visit, they have buggin’ me endlessly for pet knowledge ... guess this is the price to pay for publishing a pet magazine, right? Besides appearing on the front cover, we’ll interview them to learn on what they think about the pet industry. Don’t expect detailed answers though ‘cause they’re still kids :-) Last words, thank you all again for supporting this only growing NO.1 FREE charity-based pet lifestyle magazine.
Note : Joshua & Kibbles has left Da’ PetShopBoys to meet new challenges in life. Josh will be venturing into new things while Kibbles is still deciding whether to eat chicken or fish. Dogathon 2008 @ Bukit Expo, UPM
The dogs have finally landed at UPM; and what a blast it was! Last month held a great day out for fourlegged and two-legged creatures alike. Many gathered on a gigantic field within UPM’s grounds to participate in the annual Dogathon 2008. This year, UPM held a new theme entitled “AEROSPACE” with the tagline “Astronaut, Asteroid, Astrodogs ... Woof Off!” The field was decorated with many ‘space exploration’ decor ranging from alien plants to the aliens themselves! If you do not know what Dogathon is all about; it is a gathering of pet lovers and their pooches in a friendly race around UPM’s gardens coupled with tons of carnivallike games. It also plays a role to provide an opportunity and a venue for pet lovers and their pets to get out of bed really early (something I find hard to do) to exercise, reconnect with friends and enjoy the fresh morning air away from the clutter of the city. Besides the race, a dog agility competition and a fashion show based on the theme of this year’s installment was held (yes there were some dogs in astronaut and alien garb!) Dogathon was jointly held by UPM’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Blackwood and PetN- You & Waggie Tails. In addition to the great success of this year’s installment, Dogathon 2008 has also managed to achieve the “Biggest Gathering of Dogs” in the Malaysia Book of Records with total of over 600 dogs (yes it really was that packed) whom participated on 10th August 2008 in Bukit Ekspo, UPM. We are yet to know what next year will hold for us again at UPM. Do keep watch, we shall keep you posted!

Pets’ Runway Contest by Pets4U
A fashion show featuring many fashionable furries Despite the cloudy weather turn pouring rain on the fashion day itself, the Pets’ Runway Contest held by Pets4U at their premises in Bandar Puteri went spectacularly well. Many braved the sudden downpour to witness their little furry companions strut their stuff on the runway. Over 30 contestants eagerly primed and primmed their pets with full grooming sessions and a wide stock of fashionable doggie garb (which is clothes if you didn’t know) for the fashion show. Consolation prizes were given to those who have shown the best of their efforts but were not good enough to be the best of the day. A buffet for both owners and dogs was served last after the winners of the show were announced. The show is a display of how our ever-changing pet industry has evolved from pets just being animals - to being little additions to the family rivalling even children! Pets4U is a full-service pet salon which specialises in grooming and pet skin & health care products. Their salon is located in Bandar Puteri in the heart of Puchong. Do drop by and give them a visit!

Engine Cat!

When surprises come in a ball of fur...
While trying to finish up the magazine for this month, something really surprising happened - I found a kitten in my car’s engine bay! Earlier in the day, I saw this little furball loitering around my car somewhere around mid day after lunch. We worked late that night and the best part is it rained cats & dogs when I left the office. This was about 2am in the morning. In the morning when I woke up, I noticed my dog sniffing and barking at my car. I opened up the engine bay and saw this little fella sitting right here!
Cute eh? Just a little dirty

Ask Our Vet
Q. How to identify ‘poisoning’ in my pet? A. Your pet can be poisoned eating, absorbtion through through several ways. The three most common ways are by
skin, and by breathing. Some poisons can act immediately but some take a certain amount of time to appear. Here is a list of common symptoms to detect poisoning: Muscle tremors or spasms Vomiting and or diarrhea - may contain traces of blood Drooling or foaming Skin, ears, eyes appear reddish Appears depressed or easily excited Bleeding Ulcers or blisters appear on the mouth or skin Excessive pawing or licking Swelling Changes in body temperature Poisoned and sick If you suspect poisoning in your pet, get a veterinarian’s help immediately. It is also good to have the following information so your vet will be able to pin-point what kind of poisoning it is: - What is the name of the toxin your pet came in contact with? - If your pet ingested it, how much of it was ingested? - How long ago did you suspect your pet to have been poisoned? - The weight of your pet? - What symptoms is your pet showing -- is it vomiting, having excessive salivation? How is its body temperature? If the poison that your pet ingested is known, take the packaging to the vet with you. Some toxins need to be neutralized with activated charcoal, others need to be expelled by vomiting, and still others have antidotes. Topical toxins need to be rinsed (skin, eye) with copious amounts of water. An excellent resource for emergency poison consultation (in addition to your veterinarian) is your local Poison Control, and the National Animal Poison Control Center.
Poison Proofing Poisons such as rat poison, snail and insect baits are potential hazards; your curious pet might fall for the bait instead. Always make sure that these baits are safely out of your pet’s reach. Plants are known to have caused some pets poisoning problems too. Playing fetch or encouraging your dog to chew on plants or trees may expose them to plants that are poisonous. Always remember that dogs love to chew, and cats are curious little creatures. Even if a certain type of hazardous toxin is kept in a bottle or jar, your pet might find ways to access it, causing very unwanted situations.

‘El-Cheapo’ to ‘Wishy-Washy’ dog owners!
(These types just shouldn’t own dogs!) - By Carlos Huertas
Over the years of my profession in handling and caring for dogs, I have come across all types of people who think they love their dogs. Some over love them, some don’t know how to love them, some say they love them and many others who think they already know all about caring and loving for their dogs. In this article are some real truths to which category type you fall into. If you don’t fall into any of the following categories, you are probably on the right track knowing and understanding your dog – Go ahead and get your dog. The people who shouldn’t own a dog is a person who lacks owner commitment to their dog. Here are the eight categories: EL CHEAPO - These are the people who just want a dog but won’t spend an extra cent to care for the livelihood of the dog. Let alone training, they wouldn’t be bothered with the necessary medical requirements of the dog or proper food type. They just want a cheap dog to “play” with or to bark at strangers that may come into their home ground. They go to any retail pet shop and pick one up after a good bargain but it would be a bargain that may cost them far more after discovering the not-so-good sides of the dog. They would also go to shelters to pick up a dog without any compassion for the dog. Then they expect the dog to be obedient and do what they expect them to without any training. If the dog doesn’t listen, they would abuse them until they do. Then they would stinge on the type of food that is provided, they would leave them out without proper shelter, they would not provide the necessary medical maintenance and expect the fleas and dirt to stay off the dog without proper regular cleaning. When the dog falls ill, is full of fleas and doesn’t obey their untrained commands, the owner then decides that it is the wrong dog for them and return it back to the shelters or just be rid of it one way or the other. If you not willing to provide a budget have him trained properly, don’t even think about having a dog. A well trained dog results in a well behaved dog given all the necessary proper care and love. SILLY BILLY - Owning a dog has its risks and responsibilities. This means that you are responsible for your dog not to harm others or that you do not harm him either. A Silly Billy is a negligent dog owner. You don’t care if your dog is vaccinated against spreadable diseases, you don’t care if he runs out and roams the neighbourhood the whole day and not know what trouble he gets into, you don’t care if children provoke your dog into an explosive attack and you don’t know how to control their aggressiveness. Some of such silly billies are even proud that they have a natural guard dog in their midst. They need to know that carelessly owning an aggressive dog that is not provided proper training to use his abilities at the right time can cause more harm to both owner and those who come into uncontrolled contact with the dog. Some such owners use such dogs to “guard” their premises without realizing that such dogs require stringent training to use their aggression at the appropriate time and toward the right culprits, not at anyone that comes around him. Dogs must be trained to be in control of their behaviour and aggression for the right purpose and most importantly at the right time. We have seen and heard many stories of dogs attacking their owners after living with them for years. These owners “think” they knew their dogs. This can be avoided by the training of both owner and dog. If you advise silly billies that the lack of training their dog is extremely dangerous, they would just blow you off and say you don’t know their dog as well as they do and continue to ignore the risks to themselves or their dogs as well as others. BIG BULLY - You can physically and psychologically abuse a dog. Anger and vice can destroy a dog. When a dog is abused, the dog becomes less trainable and more difficult to live with. Sometimes, the dog decides it has had enough and it attacks someone, most often a family member or a neighbor. This can be a life or death matter, regardless of the size or breed of dog. Some people get a sick pleasure out of abusing a dog. Some children aren’t mature enough to be kind to a dog. Some people get jealous of a dog and the attention it gets from other people. Some people are mentally unstable or just plain crazy. Abuse can make a dog vicious and uncontrollable. A dog can’t feel pain when enraged. The bite of an attacking dog can break your bones, destroy your internal organs, and permanently maim and disable you. If you have a dog, and live with a person that will hurt the dog, then for your own safety, if you can’t get rid of the person, then find a new home for the dog. If you can be honest with yourself, and you determine that you are abusive to the dog, then first find the dog a new home, and then get some good counseling. All abused dogs need the help of a professional trainer. I have worked with abused dogs that were almost impossible to re-train. They had been wrecked for life. Some have been put to death due to the fault of their abusive owners. I would also call a person a Big Bully having their dog ride, unrestrained and unprotected, in the back of their pickup truck. I’ve seen a dog flip out of a pickup when it hit a bump. It’s great that you are taking your dog with you wherever you go, but you aren’t considering the welfare of your dog. There are numerous ways a dog can be killed, frozen or overheated, be injured, get lost or be stolen when left unrestrained and unprotected in the back of your truck. If your dog bites someone, thinking it is protecting your truck, but you didn’t witness the incident, then the dog could be seized on the word of a stranger and put to death. At a very minimum, the dog should wear a proper harness in the back of a truck. Better yet, the dog should be secured in a proper carrier. Even better, the dog rides with you in the cab of the truck, in a proper area behind the front seat.
BUSY BEE – When you are one real busy person, working 9 to 9pm or even longer, the one thing you look forward to is the warm hearty welcome home from man’s best friend, the dog. It’s the fun of enjoying the intense and personal interaction that you receive from your dog. The dog never answers back, takes your sorrows and attacks anytime without retaliation, he is totally faithful! But think about it this way, whilst you have had a long tiring day and look forward to coming home to a nice warm greeting and go straight to bed, your dog has been left home alone, bored to death and looking forward to spending some long awaited time with you. If you look at your dog to provide you with just that bit of “Hello, I love you too” Forget it, this kind of sporadic together time can cause a multitude of behavioral and psychological problems. If you think that a trainer can provide the solution, you are half right. After having been trained, the dog still requires a continuance to the training which is required practiced by the owner who will live with the dog for the rest of his life. It’s never a quick fix, it’s all about maintenance. So if you don’t have the time, can’t spend time to provide the attention, don’t get a dog. Some busy bees think of getting another dog to keep the first dog company because he could be lonely while they are away, think again. Just make more time for your current dog. 2 dogs mean more than twice the work of one. So if you are a busy bee, stay with one dog instead of ending up with two bored and neglected ones. Bad breath and dirty teeth are sure a turnoff...
On average, we humans visit the dentist roughly around once every 3 - 5 years depending on how diligent we are with our dental hygiene. Dogs however tend to go all their years without any dental support unless we the owners do something about it. Dogs too suffer from oral diseases, which is actually the number one health problem that pets face. My my, what black teeth you have... Plaque is a build up of excess food particals and bacteria that collects on the teeth over time. Dogs fortunately do not get cavities as often as we humans do, but will have to face gum diseases and yellowed, sometimes tartar-ridden (tartar is a form of mineral made of plaque and saliva that forms on the teeth) teeth. This causes bad breath and allows bacteria to fester. Dogs suffer from gum diseases that separate the gums, causing holes that allow bacteria and germs to grow in them. This can lead to loss of teeth or infection which is a very, very painful experience. What should I do to help? What we can do to help our pooches is to always: - Pay regular visits to your veterinarian, and insist on a dental checkup each time - Having regular cleanups of excess tartar build up by a certified vet - Practice good oral care for your dog (you can help brush your dog’s teeth too with special tools from your vet) A thorough dental checkup by your vet will be able to identify problems before they become worse. These problems are plaque and tartar build-up, gingivitis, gum disease, and teeth conditions. Your vet will normally provide the following during a dental checkup: - Checking your dog’s face and head for any form of swelling or discharges. - Examine the oral cavity and the surfaces your dog’s teeth and gums for their health condition. - Your vet will also check the salivary glands and the lymph nodes in the neck for consistency and if there is any potential problems in those areas.
Doggie Dental Hygiene
Daily Home Oral Care
Daily home oral care is actually really simple. It is as simple as you helping your dog out by brushing it’s teeth and gums with specially formulated toothpaste for dogs. You can conduct your own oral examination right at home too. Examine your dog’s mouth and oral cavity, look out for signs of gum disease such as bad breath, reddish swelling around the gums and yellow crust around the gumline. Watch out for any fractures or misalignments in the teeth too. Diligent examinations and care on your dog can save you tons of cash and also save your dog the pain and agony of having to deal with any oral diseases.
Various tools that the dentist will use to clean your doggie’s teeth up
Now and beyond Veterinary dentistry is still relatively new in our part of the world but it is catching on as more and more people are becoming aware of the complication that may arise when their dog faces dental problems. It is also known that in some parts of the world, pets too can enjoy the same procedures as we humans do in terms of dental treatments such as root canals, crowning, and braces. If you are interested in giving your pooch a dental checkup, do pay Wow-Wow@Meow-Meow Pet Saloon a visit at: 512 & 514, Jalan Pudu, 55100 Kuala Lumpur. ChitChat Cat
How do I help my two pets to get along for the first time?
Successfully introducing a cat to a dog can be a tedious and somewhat scary affair if not approached properly. It is advisable to approach this under controlled conditions (in the house where you and a family member can control both animals easily). By all means try to avoid situations where the cat runs loose, causing the dog to instinctively give it a chase.
Introducing your cat to your dog for the first time!
If your dog is an adult who has never lived with cats before, the process may take up to a month or so. Before anything, make sure you train your dog to sit and stay with full control before the feline pet is brought home. The steps listed down here must be done in order and are progressive. This means your dog and cat must clear the previous stage before proceeding to the next. Here are the steps you should take: 1. Keep your new cat separate from the dog first. While the dog is kept in a place away from the cat, let the cat explore the household under your supervision. After awhile, put the cat back in its place. Let the dog out to explore the same area after that. This is to let the dog become familiar with your new cat’s scent. 2. The next day, under your constant supervision, allow the dog to sniff and see through the opening of your cat’s cage for about half a minute. Watch out for any weird behaviour. Reward your dog accordingly if proper behavior is shown. Repeat this step a few more times within the day. Also, continue to give your cat opportunities to explore the house when your dog kept securely away from where your cat is. 3. After day 2, repeat the process of letting your dog “visit” your cat’s cage in short intervals until the dog can sit and watch the cat quietly. Remember to always reward your dog for appropriate behavior. 4. Once your dog is able to view the cat without any hostilities, allow the dog to view the cat this time, with the door completely open, but with a fence in between the cage and the dog of course for safety reasons. This gives the dog a better view of the cat without any risk. If all goes well within a few minutes, try leaving into another room away from both animals. Try to call your dog and play with it while keeping your eye on both the dog and cat’s behaviour. With play, the dog will start to lose interest in the cat and turn it’s attention to you. 5. If stage 4 went well, try repeating the process of leaving your cat’s cage door open (but of course with the fencing) whenever you are at home. Remember that it is always better to exercise caution to prevent any nasty things from happening. Always keep the cage door closed if you are not at home. Give the two pets about a month or two to see if they are OK with each other. Always make sure the cat’s food bowl and litter box are kept far away from the dog’s reach, and also make sure the cat is not able to approach the dog while it eats.
You would have to play by eye to see when is the right time to ease your supervision on both pets. This is highly subjective as all pets have different personalities. Some may get along really quick while others stay enemies for life. The most important thing is to keep control of both pets and with some effort, you may end up without any worries of your pets co-existence with each other.

House Of Groomers
Timeless talk by top groomers from American & Japan
There are different kinds of pet groomers in the world. One kind is the type who would embrace the career with foresight and advancement. A second is an artist, who puts creativity on the forefront of this career. Either way, if one is dedicated and endlessly seeking to improve, he/she is set on the path to success. In this career, you are what you groom and vice versa.
A Gathering of American Certified Master Groomers (from left to right) Ms Annie Goh, Mr. Gan, Ms Tomoko Hirokawa, Ms Nancy Han Kallenbach, Ms Goh Poh Yen.
Proudly, for the very first time, House of Groomers Academy Malaysia led by its president, Mr. Gan Wee Yet was able to invite two most knowledgeable teachers and certifiers the world can offer, Ms Nancy Han Kallenbach and Ms Tomoko Hirokawa, to test and certify a number of NCMGs, certify groomers and conduct a terrier seminar at House Of Groomers Academy Malaysia. This cements a new era of working relationship between countries in the Far East in particular House Of Groomers Academy Malaysia with NDGAA America. This sets a new height on transfer of skills and knowledge. It was a small step for the organizers but a giant leap for the international grooming industry. It was a pleasure to have Ms Nancy Han Kallenbach’s bubbly and helpful character toghether with Ms Tomoko Hirokawa’s strict but yet precise nature to conduct the testing and seminar in Malaysia. Both the certifiers gave the students and teachers of House Of Groomers Academy a new insight to this career and also what is to behold in the future of this career. Both Nancy and Tomoko presented well with their grooming skills, vast knowledge, career acumen and both were excellent representatives of NDGAA. Staff, students and teachers of House Of Groomers Academy appreciated the knowledge, kindness and experience shared by both the certifiers. Ms Nancy and Tomoko were given VIP treatment from start till the end and the relationship established from both sides have been strong, beneficial and very positive. Looking forward, this will be a formidable pet grooming “marriage” the world can reckon with! In the pursuit of excellence with strong desire for advancement, Mr. Gan Wee Yet, the founder of House Of Groomers Academy Malaysia, has in many ways did what most would think impossible. With an encyclopedia depicting Malaysian people still living on trees, this small country unknown to some, has once own the tallest building in the world. Though the Malaysian pet industry is relatively small, it has a good number of pet groomers. Most groomers are self trained and even more learn from unknown sources.
wa Nancy Han Kallenbach & Tomoko Hiroka demonstrating techniques on a terrier
Mr.Gan showing the various tools of the trade
Mr. Gan hopes that one day, all practices can be standardized and abide by a set of common code of ethics. He has brought Malaysian groomers to the world stage, competing in America, Europe and other parts of the world; with himself as an international grooming judge, established Malaysian Pet Groomers Association and now, made a breakthrough with NDGAA certification outside America. House Of Groomers Academy Malaysia is the first school successfully invited NDGAA certifiers to certify its groomers outside the American continent. It is in Mr. Gan’s hope that with this breakthrough, more countries will start to rope in NDGAA certifiers to test groomers and thus creating a standardize grooming practice throughout the world. Last but not least, House Of Groomers Academy Malaysia would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Ms Nancy Han Kallenbach and Ms Tomoko Hirokawa for their world class skills and knowledge, Jeff and Mary Ann Reynolds for bringing NDGAA to Malaysia and Peggy Harris for her effort in ensuring all well ends well. Thank you from Malaysia.

Benefits of Choostix Chewing
Chewing is a very natural behavior for puppies and dogs, and there are a number of benefits that Choostix offers. Good dental hygiene Chewing is good for keeping tartar from building up on the teeth (which helps prevent that dragon breath). When a dog chews on Choostix with its enriched acidophilus, mint and parsley seed. It reduces gases in the digestive tract, scrapes away the tartar as well as plaque that can build up in the teeth causing bad breath, yellowing and periodontal diseases. Satisfy the natural desire to chew Dogs are carnivorous animals, and animals use their mouths for many things. It’s natural for dogs to chew, and Choostix provides a healthy and safe outlet for your dog’s desire to chew. Relieve Boredom Chewing is an enjoyable pastime for many dogs, while others may chew to relieve boredom, frustration, or anxiety. If you had to choose between your new couch, your leather wallet, or a new shoe, which would you rather your dog have to chew? Choostix naturally, as it is healthy as well as safe. To Aid in Teething Puppies chew for several reasons. Puppies like to chew Choostix to relieve the discomfort in their gums as their adult teeth come in. This is called counterpressure. Chewing also helps develop strong jaws, and trains them as youngsters on the items that are acceptable to chew. To Aid in Training / Baiting Choostix can be used as rewards during training as well as bait during stacking.

Hedgehogs make weird wonderful pets!
Spiky bundles of joy
Hedgehogs are endearing pets to have. Weird and often misunderstood, these spiky balls can be very rewarding pets to own, provided you do your homework first! Understanding hedgies No matter how spiky they look, hedgehog quills are not like the porcupine’s at all. Their quills are not sharp and barbed but they can still hurt. Hedgehogs also have soft fur on their faces and undersides. They grow to an average size of up to 4 - 9 inches in length and live to about 4 - 6 years. Hedgehogs are of the nervous and jittery type and will NOT make a cuddle toy. Their waste does not smell much and they can also be trained to use a litter box. These little fellas are nocturnal animals which means they only come alive at night just like hamsters and gerbils. A hedgehog’s diet varies depending on its environment. Some have been known to even eat small birds or mammals, or even cracked birds’ eggs. As pets, they can be fed with dog biscuits, insects, worms and pieces of fruit or vegetables. These guys don’t actually see very well either and rely mostly on their sense of hearing and smell to explore. Welcoming a hedgehog into your home As with any other pets, make sure your home is escape-proofed before you bring your new spiky animal back. Due to their size, these animals can squeeze through most holes and disappear for good. Wire cages are suitable for a hedgehog’s domain but ensure that there are no gaping holes which may allow escape. A plastic container with holes drilled in it can be a great place to house your new pet too. Just like hamsters, hedgehogs benefit greatly from exercise. An exercise wheel in their cage is a must. Digging is an ingrained trait that they possess, so make sure you have a small sandbox for them to explore. Add some worms within the sand for your hedgie’s entertainment. Remember to ask the pet store what type of bedding they stock before buying the usual ones for hamsters. Hedgehogs have a tendency to gobble up the shavings and it would be a good idea if the shavings are digestible. Bonding Bonding with a hedgehog is unlike the way you would with a cat or dog. As stated before, hedgehogs have very poor eyesight so they widely use their sense of smell. Though it may seem like a good idea to wear gloves when handling a hedgehog because they are prickly - DON’T. If you do this, they will never recognise your smell. Hedgehogs identify who you are through smell and will only trust you if your smell is constant. Perfumes and other odours may put them off and confuse them. Like any pet, the secret to bonding with them is to spend time with them. Play with it often and try feeding it by hand as much as you can. Uncurling a spiky ball To pick a hedgie, always start contact from the sides. Gently cup you hands and lift the hedgie with its belly. Never ever approach them from the top as they will find it threathening and whack its quills on defence mode. Also never place your fingers in the middle of their bellies. If they so happen to curl up and trap your fingers there, you will not be a very happy person. To identify where their head is located, watch out for the nose. Hold the hedgehog by his back with the head under your fingers. Gently rock forward and backwards. When it starts to show more of it’s nose, the legs will follow suit. When they uncurl, gently place them on a surface.
Hedgehogs make wonderful little pets for busy people who live life on the go or who live in small spaces where keeping a dog or cat would seem impossible. These little fellas are interesting and entertaining pets to keep and the best part is you will never have to walk them for a pee-pee.

Licensing is divided into various categories which comprises of licenses for hunting, capturing, wildlife trade, taxidermy, import and export, keeping (as pets), trophy (dead animals) and collecting bird’s nest (swiftlet’s nests). Each category of license is set with a particular fee (charges). Here’s what it looks like :

OMG! Birdy flew away!
What to do if your pet bird flew away ...
Our feathered friends’ most fantastic ability which human have dreamed of for years - the ability to fly. This also can be the downfall of your feathered friend as they could just take flight and disappear without you even realising it. If your pet happens to fly away, it is a lose - lose situation. Your pet will not be able to care and fend for itself in the wild, and we, the human owners, will be devastated. Fly-aways do occur more often than we would probably like to think. The best way to prevent this is to be diligent in trimming your pet’s wings, or keeping them indoors only. If your pet eventually found a way to the open skies and gets lost, here are some tips that may help in recovering your pet bird: - Act quickly. You must act the moment you discover that your pet is missing. This will increase the chances of recovery. - Visually locate your pet. Get out and actively scan any trees and obvious perching places in your surroundings. If you manage to locate your bird, try your best to get it to see you. With this it may actually fly back to you. Always remember maintaining visual contact of your bird’s location is crucial to recovery. - Home beacon. You can entice your bird to come back by placing it’s cage near the place where you found it perching. Your bird may be scared and confused as it is the first time it is exposed to the great outdoors and may want to seek comfort. Its cage is a source of comfort and it might just come back to its cage. - Peace offerings. This trick works on most types of pets and may also do well with birds. Lure your pet bird back to you by offering its favourite snack or meal. - Calling your bird’s name. Birds are intelligent creatures and will respond to calls if they recognise it. Repeat phrases you often use with your bird or just try calling what you always call it. Chances are it will come flying back to you. Sometimes even if you have tried your best to recover your pet, it might prove unsuccessful but don’t give up hope! Post ads with pictures and a description of your pet bird. Try your best to utilise every resource to spread the word that your pet is on the loose. You will never know that maybe someone out there may prove to be of good help.
