Many new pet stores made their way into the pet industry of Malaysia and some left. But as for Yang, he always wanted to have a place for pet lovers to call ‘home’ because pet lovers want a place to gather, want to feel welcomed not only to buy stuffs but also to feel comfortable just to tag around with their pets, plus they also need to buy stuff. From there, Fluff Pet Store was born ... Fluff Pet Store, was officially opened to the public early last month on the 1st of September, 2008. The public responded well with an estimated attendance of 200 people. Besides providing basic services such as pet grooming and selling puppies, reptiles, sugar-gliders, rabbits etc., one thing that interest us is entire concept of the store. Fully equipped with FREE Wi-Fi internet service, a lounge area with TV, a mini library, plenty of pet magazines to read on and comfortable sofas just to name a few, the place looked way too comfortable for an ordinary pet store. Fluff Pet Store is designed to look, feel and operate as a club, just to give pet lovers the opportunity to do something meaningful where they will organise outings for members, celebrating birthday parties with the furkids, promoting responsible pets ownership, educating pet owners to learn how to differentiate good and bad products, and to contribute to the charity. Besides that, you can purchase pet birthday cakes, cupcakes, cookies and more from them too! Located in a very suitable and strategic pet-friendly mall, pet owners do not have to hide their pets or smuggle them in just to avoid being ‘shoo-ed’ away by the guards. Many pet lovers love to tag around and share the experience of owning pets. Fluff Pet Store is also a good platform to allow your pets to socialised while the owners get to know of more pet lovers friends. They can sit in the lounge area for some tea or coffee while sharing pet knowledge or just a simple chit-chat. One more thing unique about this pet store is that the puppies sold there are wee-wee pad-trained, which solved the hardest and most headache part for puppy owners - simply doing their business. They also provide a variety of shampoos for owner to choose from for their pets’ grooming sessions, customers can feel free to try a shampoo or change to another based on their preferences. You can witness a wide range of reptiles tagged with competitive prices and also GliderSLURP, specially-formulated for the well-beings of sugar-gliders available there, if you just move your bum and pay them a visit! Wilson, as we named him, experienced a tough life since he was born. Not knowing whether he’s a German Shepherd or a Mongrel, he lived in a place where even rats would avoid it. But he had no choice as he is just 5 weeks old. He was fed with unhealthy food and sometimes, the maids would kick him away when Wilson wanted to play or just to seek for shelter. Luckily enough, a kind-hearted man could not bear seeing the torture and took Wilson away to us. As usual, every new animal that comes to our life will definitely excite Da’ PetShopBoys but unfortunately, Wilson was sick when he arrived. Based on our ‘Petster’ knowledge, this is bad news - the Parvo virus attack! We admitted him to the vet late at night and the doc said it was only 50/50 chance of survival ... but we insisted him to go on with the treatment although it would be costly to do so. No matter he’s a German Shepherd, a Mongrel or even a stray, we’ll do whatever we could to help. God was fair, after 6 days of painful treatment, he was cured. Big thank you to Medivet, Wilson is now healthy and playful ... getting ready to face the world full of love! The Parvo Treatment - Not a good sight but at least it saved Wilson’s life ... > We’ll talk about this deadly virus in the next issue! Creature FEATURE The African Grey Parrot Dogs are not only man’s best friend! Although dogs are known as man’s best friend but personally, I think that the African grey parrot is the ‘bestest’. Similar to dogs, it is good at learning tricks and understanding the words coming out from my mouth but this parrot can do one thing more - which is ‘talking’. Parrots may not be popular here in Malaysia due to a few reasons, they are costly and rare in the industry. However, I know one or two African grey owners who were willing to share with me some useful tips and information regarding this ‘special’ friend. Grey African Parrots As Pets The African grey parrot has got to be one of the most charming parrots. It has a wonderful character, a combination of intelligence and beauty. Wrapped with elegant dark grey silky feathers, they are beautiful, intelligent parrots, and that would make a wonderful addition to any family who fully understands their capabilities. However, building a relationship takes lots of love, time and patience. Due to their highly intelligent nature, the African grey parrot can become easily bored and a bored parrot may quickly lead to behavioural problems such as feather picking. You don’t want your parrot to look like Zidane right? In addition to that, they also have a tendency to chews things up and consistent training from a diligent owner is a MUST for this destructive bird! These intelligent birds are best suited to people who have experience with other pet birds. If you manage to fulfill the parrot’s needs, you will have a lifelong buddy - as the lifespan of an African grey parrot is up to 60 years. A big commitment, however, if you are a true parrot lover you will appreciate having a true friend for life. Here comes the best part, African grey parrots are particularly noted for their exceptional talking and cognitive abilities. It is proven that these parrots are capable of associating human words with their meanings. They also mimick sounds and voices quite accurately. One of Africa grey parrot I saw mimicked the sound of a V6 engine revving. Cool eh? Training and Behavioral Guidance African grey parrots are amongst the easier parrots to keep. This being said, they do present challenges, such as excessive chewing - especially at certain stages in their life. They do discover their beaks as method of “disciplining us” once they are out of the “baby stage” and they can generally be somewhat naughty, and it really is important to learn to understand them and to guide their behavior before an undesirable behavior has been established. Biting may just be a small problem to you but undisciplined parrots will chew on electric wiring potentially causing house fires. They will take basically anything in your home as a “toy” that can be explored and chewed on. Even a young bird that has not been neglected and abused requires proper guidance. Diet It is absolutely essential that your African grey parrot gets a healthy, nutrious diet in order to stay as a healthy bird. Wrong diet may cause your parrot to suffer from several health issues. Your parrot may show the following signs that he / she is given the wrong food - Poor Health, Hyperactivity, Persistent Screeching, Bad Temper, Non-replacement of feathers after the moult, Biting, Continuous Moult Feather Plucking & General Bad Behaviour, etc. Pelletted food should form the foundation of a proper diet, but should be supplemented with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with grains and proteins to keep your African grey parrot healthy and happy. Of course, a small amount of seed mix can be fed to the African grey parrot, but it should be noted that generally although seeds have some nutritional value and a place in the diet of your African grey parrot, they are largely fattening and poorly balanced, so they should not form a large part of the diet. It can be quite trickery to persuade African grey parrots to try new food, so you should try and get your parrot to try new foods from a young age. It should also be noted that African grey parrots can be prone to calcium deficiency so you should get the calcium levels of your parrot checked once a year by a vet. You should not use calcium supplements unless you have sought the advice of your vet. How To Keep ‘Em Safe? Many cages sold have particularly hard perches made of dowelling rod. If you have purchased a young African grey parrot, it is often a good idea to replace these perches with perches of a softer wood, that are not so smooth. By doing this your African grey parrot will learn the art of climbing fast. It is also worth mentioning at this point, that if you have purchased a baby African grey parrot you should lower the perches and give the parrot time to explore before moving the perches higher in the cage. Obviously it important that your African grey parrot has access to food and water at all times. Check that the design of the cage ensures easy access to food. It may a good idea to install additional food pots for your parrot as this will increase the birds exploring nature at an earlier age. On slightly different note, you should place another stand for your African grey parrot in another room of the house. This will give your African grey parrot the chance to explore the house, get comfortable in the surroundings of the house and give you parrot more choice in where he resides. And of course, keep all your valuable items in the drawers so that they won’t end up as ‘toy’! THE MALAYSIAN NO.1 FREE PET LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE WWW.PETSTERMAGAZINE.COM PETSTER magazine Ask Our Vet Overweight Cat Question: Our overweight cat cannot groom herself. We wash her bottom, every other day which prevents inflammation (which is chronic without our cleaning). We are wondering if there is anything that replicates the enzyme of cat saliva, which would help her inflammation? Answer: No products that replace cat saliva and I think the answer lies in getting her into your vet and finding out why she is so overweight. Your vet will need to rule out medical problems such as diabetes, and once a clean bill of health is given, then he/ she can recommend a diet program to get your cat to a normal weight. It is unhealthy for your cat to be overweight. As for keeping her clean, brushing her daily and getting a groomer (or your vet) to give her a sanitary shave (shaving fur near the anus, tail, and urethra) so that the fur does not become soiled or matted. Good luck and get her in. Cat Not Urinating Question: My cat is not urinated and after 18 hours I took him to the vet where he has been for 3 days now. They have been telling me it is touch and go. How long does it take for a cat to recover from what they are calling urinary tract blockage? He has been on a catheter during his time in the hospital. He still seems lethargic when we saw him yesterday. Answer: Urinary blockage is more than just unblocking the blockage. The recovery will depend upon the nature of the blockage and how long the cat suffered, if the bladder ruptured, if the kidneys became infected or involved, etc. Often, after surgery to unblock an obstructed urinary tract, there is swelling and a considerable amount of pain from the procedure and blockage. It can take several days to weeks before your cat may be well again. Cat’s Eye Cloudy Cat Hard Time Breathing Question: I noticed my cat’s left eye was cloudy. I brought him to the vet and she did some tests to see if any type of disease. They are gonna get back to me with the results in a few days. How worried should I be of this being a fatal disease? Answer: The big fatal diseases you need to worry about would not just cause a cloudy eye but generally would have more symptoms. Cloudiness can be caused by trauma to the front or back of the eye, inflammation, metabollic disease such as diabetes, feline leukemia, parasitic infection, etc. It is best not to worry until you know the answer, otherwise you will drive yourself crazy and probably unnecessarily. Question: A few months ago, our 11 yr old cat was having a hard time breathing. He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and we have been giving him medicine. Now he has lost weight, is very weak and can’t lay down, only takes a few steps at a time and sits and stares. He has not eaten for 4 days and gets very stressed when we give him his medicine by mouth because he won’t eat it in his food. He is miserable. Is it time we just put him to rest? We have done everything possible and we don’t want him to suffer! Answer: I would first have your vet do a blood test to evaluate his thyroid function, and liver and kidneys. He may be hyperthyroid and that is treatable. He may need just an adjustment on his medication. It would probably benefit him to be hospitalized and monitored for a few days, with an IV so he can be fed and be hydrated while trying to recover. Your vet will be able to give you an indication if anything is possible to help your little cat. I am so sorry he is suffering so much. Bloody Vomit / Stools Question: My dog was vomiting blood and had bloody stools. Our vet gave him medicine for an ulcer and thank God he is doing great. Now what is the best diet to keep him on? We have stopped the aspirin we were giving him for arthritis which I think that caused some of the problem. Answer: The aspirin was probably a BIG cause of the ucler. Your vet may prescribe a prescription food that is very bland and easy on the stomach such as Hill’s Prescription I/D standing for “intestinal diet”. Your vet may also suggest some medication that will help heal the ulcer and get your dog back to normal. Your vet should also be able to help you treat your dog with other medications for the arthritis. Puppy Not Eating or As Playful Question: We have an 8 week old Lab and he has been with us for a week and is well adjusted. This morning, I fed him and he won’t eat. Also, I noticed he is not as playful. Should I take him to the vet? Answer: Yes, you should take him in. Any change in eating habits or playing habits (especially both) should be investigated. Puppies that little are so prone to viral infections, parasitic infections and bacterial infections because of their immature immune systems. Get the pup in immediately, along with a fresh stool sample. Vomiting in Cat Needs Immediate Attention Question: My cat suddenly started vomiting the other day (8 times) then proceeded to vomit 3 more times (bile and white foam). She went outside and we haven’t seen her since. She rarely leaves for more than an hour. We are wondering if this could be a poison or something chronic that started showing symptoms. She has been underweight for a while now. Answer: With the fact that she has been underweight for some time now, suggests a more chronic problem, although it does not rule Ask Our Vet out toxicity or poisoning. She should be examined immediately by your vet to determine if she has hyperthyroidism, which can show up as vomiting and weight loss. Your vet will need to run a blood test on her and possibly some xrays. Good luck and I hope you find her to get her in ASAP. The information in this section was taken from the website - “www.petservice.com” as reference. Petster Magazine has viewed the site and we find that in a pet healthcare crisis, this site allows the public to access and implement interventions that saved pet lives. This website is a direct and simple way to personalized advice from professionals and paraprofessionals. We hope that readers will be well informed on animal health solutions. For readers who is facing health problems with their pets, please feel free to email the details to editor@petstermagazine.com and we will get the professionals to attend to your problems. Scratching Shih Tzu Question: My Shih-Tzu is about a year old and he scratches all night long and all during the day. I’ve tried everything and now I have cut all of his hair off in order to put oil on him four or five times a day. It is not working very well. What can I do, I think it is dry skin. Answer: You need to take him to your vet. The oil may be making the problem worse. He may have allergies, or he may have a problem with mites, both of which he can receive treatment and some relief for. Get him in immediately and no more oil. Your vet may suggest a diet change, antihistamine, steriod injection, blood tests, fungal culture, antibiotic trial, etc. Pet $hoppers Little Kwitter, Original World Famous Cat Toilet Training System It is ingenious! Litter Kwitter starts next to the toilet with a seat device and a red plastic disk full of litter so your cat knows what it is & where to go to use it. Then you put it on the porcelain rim of the toilet, so your cat learns to hop up (easy when you’re as nimble as we are). Once your cat gets the idea that the toilet is where the action is, you can move to the amber disk. It has a hole in the middle and room for some litter around the edges so that your cat can use it but also starts to learn how to perch on the edge of the seat itself. It doesn’t usually take too long to get the hang of this so then it’s time to use the green disk. It has a bigger hole so that your cat can balance on the seat and go, knowing that everything will end up in the toilet. Brilliant !!! Find it @ www.litterkwitter.com Wanna Advertise Here? (PART 2) ... continued from last issue (These types just shouldn’t own dogs!) - By Carlos Huertas (G-Pet Training Specialist 012-2313183) SUPERSTARS - The Superstar gets a dog as a possession or a sign of prestige. The Superstar gets a dog because the dog will get the owner something. This includes the person who gets a dog because they want to attract other people to them (to attract a wife or husband), not because they feel they have a need in their lives for a companion dog. This is also the politician that gets a dog because it will improve their image as a family person. The Superstar is also the sport dog person who gets a dog because they want to win a trophy. If that dog can’t win the trophy (obedience or show), they get rid of the dog and get another one. The Superstar is likely to “churn” dogs, and go from one to the next in order to own a champion or to get more attention. The Superstar won’t settle for a less than the perfect dog, so they discard the ones that don’t perform according to their goals. They also often neglect the basic social needs of the dog, which invariably results in the dog having more and more problems. Beware: some of your top breeders and trainers can fall into this category. I have seen quite a few very wealthy people like this. These people lack compassion for dogs and are likely to “throw away” a dog to get another one. For these types, it’s all about their pride and money and not about the life of their dogs. They treat their dogs like trophies. Keep when shiny, throw out when rusty. LAZYBONES – The Lazybones type are those who just don’t bother with the needs of their dogs first. There is always something else more important to deal with not that they would. These sort lack motivation and most times rely on the dog to motivate them. Everything is a postponement to them. They will consider training their dog when their time allows it. They will postpone vaccinations, baths, grooming and sometimes even when required to feed their dogs. Their dogs are neglected totally, last on the list of things to do. As long as Lazybones doesn’t couple up with El Cheapo, then the dog will be provided with (delayed) training and continued lessons, that is if they ever get to sign up for the training to start with. The dog could further benefit from a paid trainer to do the training and maintenance training, get a paid dog walker to walk the dog, and a paid housekeeper/helper to clean up after the dog and do the basic errands, so long as Lazybones spends time with the dog every day and take the dog with them on a regular basis. The Lazybones with money isn’t necessarily a hopeless case. Lazybones who won’t keep up on the needs of the dog shouldn’t own a dog, and they are too lazy to find the dog a new home. To have Lazybones for an owner means a miserable life for the dog. From my experience with the Lazybones type, they rarely bother to hire a dog trainer. They are just too lazy to make the effort. The ones that I have worked with never practice what is taught, and they never continue the training after the lessons are completed. Some even forget that they had sent their dogs for training! WISHY WASHY – These types can’t settle for anything. They go everywhere and hear everything and not take anything seriously or take everything seriously. They are like wanderers, always seeking what they think is best but what is given is still never good enough for their dog. They are never satisfied with professional advice and prefer to refer to more information than quality advice. They never know what is right and think if they learn more, they will be better off than focusing on what has been taught. They always seem to know what’s best for their dog but then seek untrained ways to solve their problems with their dogs. They take what is learnt from one and then shop it around to see if they can get better advice to argue with the hired trainer. They stir up trouble, by misstating what a trainer says, then they get the trainer in trouble by then going to their vets, friends, groomers, other trainers, etc. and not telling the full version of what is going on and what is being recommended. They start rumors and cause problems for their trainers. They also get offended when you ask them to stick to a logical, stepby-step training program. They want to rush their dogs along, before the foundation training is completed. They go from seminar to seminar, often talking to some very good trainers, but never listening to what is being said. A typical rolling stone that gathers no moss in the end. One Wishy Washy that trained her dog with a friend of mine was the type that went from trainer to trainer. She didn’t complete the foundation training that her dog required complaining that there was no improvement. She then went on to send her dog for advance training but also complained of no improvement before completing the training. She then went back to foundation training with another trainer. To this day, her dog has not been properly trained and she didn’t make any payments to all the trainers that she half hired! IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE ABOVE, PLEASE BE ADVISED NOT TO GET A DOG TO TORTURE IT. MAMAs & PAPAs – These are the ones that treat their dogs like little furry human babies. They pamper, they spoil, they put their dogs in diapers and if possible use pacifiers and milk bottles in replacement of a real baby. They refuse to see the dog as a dog. Their dogs fill an abnormal need for attention and companionship that robs the dog of its dignity and place as a dog in their homes. These Mamas & Papas spoil anything smaller in size than they are, they spoil their children who in turn are mean to their dog. The Mamas and Papas won’t train their dogs, even when the dogs have become dangerously aggressive. Only when a family member is bitten, they hire a trainer. After the trainer tells them that although the dog needs training and that they will also need to change how they relate to the dog, the Mamas and Papas get offended. They ignore the trainer, blaming the dog for the owner’s own failures, and get rid of the dog. Sometimes, they keep the dogs, further endangering others. These types of owners refuse to accept the concept that dogs are pack animals, like wolves, and need a proper leadership structure in order to learn commands, be obedient, and to stop problem behaviors. They view dog training as a kind of torture that turns dogs into robots. They view giving a dog a command as being mean spirited. And they don’t want to learn about, or use, the proven scientific dog training concepts of positive and negative reinforcement, stimuli and responses, etc. They don’t think science applies to their dogs. In human society, we want everyone to be treated equal, based upon merit and character. In dog society, dogs are programmed by their genetics to see society as a vertical hierarchy of leaders and followers. Leadership is maintained through biting and aggressive posturing, eye contact, threats, and actions. They see all we do in relationship to the pack order. The Mama or Papa type of owner usually won’t let you train their dog with a leash and collar or with food. They want you to reason with their dogs to make them obey. Sometimes, I wonder if they realize that their furry human babies will walk on fours for all their lives, not forgetting that they will never speak but instead just bark for their needs. The dog of a Mama or Papa is often extremely confused, and sometimes abused (psychologically and physically), by the very owners that profess that they love their dogs. R 13 The Dog’s Blog Handmade, Fresh, Natural & Affordable: JUST What Your Dog Needs! A New Approach To Healthy Diet stakingly researched ingredient by ingredient, you will have the peace-of-mind that your dog will be getting fresh and all natural treats which do not contain any fillers, preservatives, additives or coloring which may be harmful toward your loved pet. As our society advances in terms of research and sciences in canine health, we as loving pet owners should be more aware of what goes into our dogs’ mouth, and how it may adversely affect their health in the long run. Fresh, natural and additive-free treats are a great way to start on a long, healthy and happy life for your dog. What any pet lover desires above all is a strong, healthy and energetic dog. A dog IS what he eats. We have never seen such a large selection of foods for dogs to eat, but this has come with a high rate of food recalls and scares about the quality of products hitting our supermarket shelves. With this variety there is no reason to give your dog food that could endanger its health. Why sacrifice your dog’s health? Good nutrition is THE KEY TO GOOD HEALTH. THIS IS NOT JUST TRUE FOR HUMANS, BUT OUR DOGS AS WELL. A healthy diet can help prevent disease, promote longevity and improve your dog’s quality of life. When feeding your dog, why feed your beloved and loyal pet something that you are not prepared to eat yourself? With our rushed and busy lives, we have tended to rely on ready-made meals as we juggle tasks to keep on top of our rushed and busy lives. But lately, the old adage that came from our parents and grandparents warning us against eating food with preservatives has been proved true by the rise of the organic food movement. As we try to care for our bodies by eating better, why should we not do this for our pets too? Commercially-available food typically contains preservatives, additives and artificial colorings in order to ensure a long shelflife. With local radio stations and various media warning on the dangers feeding dogs chocolate, most dog lovers now know of the adverse and sometimes fatal effect it can have on dogs. Fortunately for dog lovers who feel that their pet may miss out on a good thing in chocolates, healthy, beneficial and natural substitutes are now readily available. Carob is a perfectly natural chocolate substitute which tastes just like the real thing! If you think you’re a cat expert, do you actually know ... Although cats are very popular as pets in our country but how many cat owners do actually know about them? Living with a cat is sometimes like having a wild animal in your home. Oddly, one minute they look cuddly and cute, and the next they look vicious, and sometimes act that way. I’m often left wondering what they’re thinking, and why cats do that? Do you know? Cat urine glows in the dark if a black light is shined on it. This is a good way to detect cat urine in your home. The cat (or domestic cat, house cat) is a small carnivorous mammal. It is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to destroy vermin. A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. World Animal Day - a special opportunity for anyone who loves animals. World Animal Day (WAD) was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and has been widely celebrated in countries as diverse as Australia and Malta, Singapore and Lithuania. World Animal Day was launched in the UK on 4 October 2003. Organizations and individuals who participated in what was to become an annual event in most countries, quite simply, helped make history. Hundreds of people also took the opportunity to make a pledge for the animals. Meanwhile in other parts of the world, WAD continued to grow. In 2004, exciting events took place around the world, ranging from large educational initiatives in Syria and Nepal to local events dotted across Romania, throughout the USA and in many other countries. In 2005, WAD just got bigger and better! The Humane Society International coordinated its campaign against using animals for fighting to coincide with World Animal Day, with member societies in the US, across Latin America and throughout the world highlighting the issues involved. Organizations connected with animal health issues, such as the Bella Moss Foundation and the Animal Health Trust, promoted awareness of MRSA, cancer and other health problems. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WPSA) launched a World Animal Week website to encourage its member societies to raise funds and increase awareness. And of course the globe, animal shelters, places of worship, schools and individuals all did something special to highlight the importance of animals in the world. And that is the aim to encourage everybody to use this special day to commemorate our love and respect for animals. The Pet Safari’s mission statement for this special date - 5th October 2008 ... To celebrate this year’s World Animal Day, The Pet Safari gathered NGOs like SPCA & PAWS at IKANO Power Centre from 30th September 2008 to 5th October 2008 to spread words for awareness and also to highlight the plight of the animals in animal shelters. A combined donation box was also placed to raise fund. The Pet Safari successfully covered all objectives of this celebration :- To celebrate animal life in all its forms. - To celebrate humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom. - To acknowledge the diverse roles that animals play in our lives; from being our companions, supporting and helping us, to bringing a sense of wonder into our lives. - To acknowledge and be thankful for the way in which animals enrich our lives. i P ETS SALON helps keep your pets looking healthy, happy and good looking. White mice are one of the tiniest pets to own. Plus, they are relatively inexpensive to purchase, take care of, and feed. They are a bit skittish and harder to handle than some of the lager rodents such as rats, but they can become quite tame and will take food from the hand and allow themselves to be handled if started at a yound age. Mice are quite ideal as small pets that are entertaining to watch, are easy to care for and make very few demands on their owners. Choosing Healthy Mice When picking out your mice, look for active bright mice, with smooth clean coats and pink clean skin on the ears and tail. The eyes and nose should be free of discharge, and the mouth and anal areas should be clean and dry. Their breathing will be relatively fast, but should not be labored or noisy. Check the cage as well - it should be clean (the mice have been well cared for) and the droppings should be formed. Look for a pet store that separates males and females at a young age (good breeders will do this). Mice can reproduce by about 6-8 weeks of age, although this is very stressful on the female and should be avoided. If your pet store doen’t separate mice at a young age you may well end up taking home a pregnant female. To tell the difference between young males and females check under their tails for the distance between the anal opening and genital opening - this distance is shorter in the females. A breeder or pet store should be able to do this for you, but it can be hard to do in young mice unless you have males and females to compare to each other. In older (6-8 week old) male mice, the testicles are usually readily visible. Give them a nice place to sleep ... Mice like to stay warm, so an aquarium actually makes a better home for them than a wire cage. Provide plenty of clean cedar shavings or shredded paper towels for their bedding area. Change the bedding materials on a weekly basis or more frequently if necessary. Wire cages can also be used for a home for your pet mouse, but it will require a bit more maintenance than an aquarium. Additionally, it will be especially important to keep it away from any possible drafts. Cheese time? Feeding time is a relatively simple task with white mice. They are easy to please and their dinner fare is easy to purchase. Unlike their cartoon counterparts, white mice do not exist on a diet of cheese stolen from human homeowners. Instead, they enjoy nibbling on seeds, uncooked cereal grain, and lettuce. In fact, it’s easy to create a healthy mix of your own special brand of pet mouse food using dry food products. Most of your supplies can be purchased at any pet store, discount store, or grocery store. Make sure that you also purchase an airtight container that can be used to store the food mix. Although white mice are not big water drinkers, a fresh supply of clean water should be provided daily. This means that each day, the water dish should be emptied and replaced. How to tame them? Most mice will become quite tame given time, patience and perhaps a little bribery. At first, allow the mice time to become accustomed to their new environment. Once the mice are calm, start spending more time around their cage and quietly talk to the mice to get them used to your voice. As the mice become comfortable or curious with your presence, start offering some favorite tidbits (try millet or sunflower seeds) by hand, and once the mice are taking treats from your hands, they may start walking on your hands, or you can start trying to pick them up. Last advise! Mice are nocturnal and very social. They will be very active in the evening and night, but don’t expect to do much with them during the day. Being social, they are best kept in groups but keeping males and females together should be avoided unless you want lots of mice in a short amount of time. R 25 Birdie T alk Why Clip A Bird’s Wings? If you’re afraid that your birdie would take off one day! Clipping your pet bird’s wings, is it the right choice for you? There are pros and cons for clipping a pet bird’s wings, we would like to go over them and allow you to make the right decision for your bird based on your knowledge and your own circumstances. The primary purpose for clipping a bird’s wings is not to prevent flight completely but to ensure the bird is unable to achieve or sustain upward flight and thus to prevent escape. Clipping only one wing can still enable most birds to fly to some degree and with the help of the right wind currents can lead to escape in the wild, which will almost certainly be death for the bird. Partially clipping the wings will give the bird varying amounts of ability to fly, depending upon the degree to which the wings are clipped. Why You Shouldn’t Clip a Bird’s Wings? * It can become unbalanced and unable to regain that balance on it’s own. * Being unbalanced can cause crashes. * It cannot escape house hold predators like cats. * It can get stranded on the floor and get crushed. * It can get caught behind or between furniture. * The bird could free fall and cause serious injury. * It decreases a bird’s freedom. * Clipping the wings will make the bird more dependent upon you. * Incorrectly clipping a bird’s wings can cause wing damage. Why You Should Clip a Birds Wings? * It can calm a bold bird down and make a bird tamer. * It can cut back on an aggressive bird’s advances. * It can prevent flying into ceiling fans and mirrors, etc. Step 1 Have a veterinarian show you how much to trim the first time, and take notes so you’ll know how to trim the feathers on your own. The amount to trim depends on the strength and body weight of the bird. Step 2 Have someone assist you in restraining the bird. Step 3 Examine all feathers of the wing. Step 4 Look for emerging feathers, which have blood in the shafts (see Tips). These feathers should never be cut. Step 5 Locate the primary feathers on each wing. These feathers start at the leading edge of the wing and are followed by secondary and tertiary groups of feathers. Step 6 Use scissors to cut the primary feathers on each wing, just behind the protective coverts (small feathers) overlying the flight feathers. You may want to cut just one or two feathers a day until you see a sufficient reduction in flying ability. Step 7 If you cut or damage a blood feather, pluck it out at the base with tweezers or needle-nose pliers to stop the blood loss. Step 8 Be sure to clip both wings evenly, as clipping only one may leave the bird unbalanced. Are you a working dawg? Good news!
