Good day again everyone! Time sure passes fast when you are busy. Before we knew it, it is already the middle of 2008 - and we are still going strong now on our 5th issue! I bet some of you were surprised when you that we got a very, VERY familiar face on our front cover. As a note: these are the times when I really wish I was my cat. Those cats of ours were once plodding and scratching their way through life for food on the streets, now they are superstars! Kira and Kibbles, you meows should consider yourselves very lucky. I am sure they know that. Oh yes just to announce, we have finally found ourselves a new sales girl who’s young and energetic. Good. That the very thing we need. We need someone to buy us snacks and drinks during the long nights in the office. Just kidding Charine. Also, this month we will be running our charity adoption drive ‘Home A Pet 2008’ again but this time in a slightly different location. This time it will be situated in Bukit Jalil’s Sports Complex which will also be running their 10th anniversary celebration. Be sure to drop by and visit us! - Joshua Boey By the way, these are the guys who made the photos look great. ------>

Whiskas Cat ‘Kenduri’ @ Kuala Lumpur
Bringing Cats and their owners closer together Kuala Lumpur, 31 May 2008 – WHISKAS® Food for Cats treated a total of 300 cats to a feast of balanced and nutritious dry cat food at the first ever WHISKAS Cat ‘Kenduri’ held at Stadium Titiwangsa today. This joyful event brought owners and cats even closer together through activities such as ‘Grooming Session’ and ‘Health Checks’ by experts in these fields. Many of the participants had the chance to exchange thoughts and admiration towards each other’s cats. Maria Tunku Sabri, the brand ambassador of WHISKAS said, “As a cat owner, I understand the importance of giving them the best in everything especially when it comes to food, regular grooming and proper vet care. With a complete lifestyle, emerges a complete and content cat.” “For like us humans, cats need love and attention from us, too. Hence, to ensure that your cat is always at his or her prime, a complete and balanced meal is needed. For with it, they stay active, alert, bright-eyed and always covered in a glossy coat of fur,” Maria added. This event portrayed the ‘Kenduri’ feel with a total of approximately 6,077 visitors going in and out of the stadium with a total of 300 cats feasting on a complete and balanced diet.
Wendy Lai, Petcare Marketing Manager of MARS Malaysia said, “As a brand that cares about animals, especially cats, we are very dedicated towards providing nutritious meals for all cats. As we understand, the varying breeds of cats, depending on age require a different set of nutrition. Hence, all WHISKAS food is balanced in diet and taste! Thus, creating a perfect bond between owner and pet.” Furthermore, this unique event adopted by the ‘Kenduri’ theme was partially an attempt to create the largest gathering of cats in the Malaysia Book of Records. However, having fallen short of the mark by 50 cats attendees, the event was still a successful drive that brought joy and happiness to all those present. “The attempt for the biggest gathering of cats is very much secondary to our objective of pampering cats present here today; we are extremely glad to have championed the welfare of cats through the stage presentation that highlights the areas that promote the wellbeing of a healthy and active cat, as we believe ‘Cats Know The Differences’ for a healthy lifestyle through a complete balanced diet” said Lai. WHISKAS is available in six tasty, nutritionally complete and balanced selections enriched with Omega Oil for healthy skin, shiny coat and reduces hair loss, with the key ingredients of WHISKAS cat food lie in the plethora of real ocean fish and wholegrain cereal that contain specific vitamins, minerals and nutrients that provide cats with a healthy and tasty diet.

Home A Pet 2008: 2nd Bite!
Another bunch of animals have found new and loving homes! Well we have wrapped up the 2nd installment of our ‘Home A Pet’ series! Through this long (I mean REALLY long) duration, more than 80 animals including dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and even rabbits were successfully re-homed. To add to that, a healthy sum of donations were poured in by generous patrons to help support our local animal shelters. At this event, a lucky subscriber also managed to walk away with RM2000 by winning our ‘Count the Beans Contest’. Mr. Patrick Lim (member id# PN04922008) remember to use the cash wisely! Hope part of this new found wealth goes well into your pet’s tummy. I’m sure that old bone it’s been playing with needs a replacement! In the end, we made some new friends and also managed to do our community something right by helping homeless animals regain a chance at life. To the new owners of these lucky pets, do take good care of them! We will be holding Home A Pet 2008 again in July on the 11th - 13th at Bukit Jalil Sport Complex. This will be a cat specific event called ‘Home
A Pet 2008: It’s Meow Time!’
Be sure to drop by and visit us. Hope to see you soon!

Dogathon 2008 is just around the corner!
The yearly dog affair is closing in to lift-off! Aliens, asteroids, astronauts and spaceships... Yes, all these general knowledge about the outer space have been learnt since school days and we have been proud as a nation who has had our very first Malaysian astronaut into a world unfamiliar to any of us residing at earth. But well, ever heard of ASTRODOGS? The name itself sounds weird but mysterious. This year, ASTRODOGS are hitting DOGATHON™ 2008 on the 10th of August 2008 at the only university with the faculty of veterinary medicine in Malaysia, UNIVERSITY PUTRA MALAYSIA. Get ready to have smashing fun as we blast off with the theme “AEROSPACE”, bearing the tagline: Astronaut, Asteroid, Astrodogs …Woof Off!!! Adding on further to the excitement and glorious news, Blackwood as our platinum sponsor and Rhone Ma as our gold sponsor will be joining us this year. It is an event where dog owners and animal enthusiasts alike will call as a day of fun, excitement and charity. DOGATHON™ started in 1997 as a platform in addressing the issue of Stray Dog Awareness. This was one way the society could directly, and animals, indirectly play their parts in this matter. Therefore, DOGATHON™ was initiated as a charity drive and held annually to raise funds in aid of ‘Stray Dog Awareness’ programs. The funds rose used to be channeled towards SPCA and PAWS. However, since 2006, the funds are channeled towards an animal welfare project, “PRO-KASIH” instead. It is a stray animal neutering project aimed at controlling the population of strays in a more humane way. Spear-headed by our own veterinary students, the project includes education of the public, environmental preventative measures, and neutering via a catch-neuterrelease program, beginning on the campus grounds of UPM. Even with its serious mission, it is still a fun-filled event, giving exposure to all types of dogs and dog owners to indulge in something out of the ordinary. The main highlight of the event is the DOGATHON™ Race where dogs and owners are required to run for 2.5 km in the early morning coolness under the shady trees of UPM. Every year, great games and activities for both dogs and owners have been a hallmark of each DOGATHON™. The DOGATHON™ is unlike any other dog show where dogs are caged-up for the purpose of exhibition. It is an event where pedigree and non-pedigree dogs are all welcomed to participate in. This year DOGATHON™ 2008 director, Miss Yew Ee Ling with her courageous and robust team has initiated several new games to add more colours and life to the event, which starts from 7am till 2pm. Various games are available on the menu, it will definitely tire your feet as well as your furry friends. If you are wondering and can’t help anticipating for the scores of excitements we’ve lined up, do join us on this day to make your dog’s life perfecto by meeting and socializing with other dogs while having amusing time together with you. Till then, it’ll remain suspense! Collect all family members, bring along your picnic mats, enjoy a quality time with us here in DOGATHON™. Ample of food and drink stalls will be set up as well to quench your thirst and to feed your rumbling belly. We, as students are not from a big company or organization, and we are not backed by huge funding. Whatever community project we wish to do, relies on the students’ love, enthusiasm and sheer hard work together with the support from our generous sponsors, supporters and NGOs. Moreover, we’re making a feat in the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Biggest Gathering of Dogs’ this year. Hence, we hope that the community will be able to support us, by coming with your dogs, not just to join in any exciting doggy event, but to participate in one, with the heart and soul for animal welfare, the DOGATHON™. We promise great fun for a noble cause! Do tune in to the radio fms, our website: www.vet.upm.edu. my/~dogathon for updates about us or drop us an email at dogathon2008@gmail.com if further inquires arise. Be ready. Be vigorous. Be adventurous. Cheers, DOGATHON™ 2008 Team

A Beauty & The 2 (Small) Beasts
Our mascots get acquainted with Amber Chia!
This month, Da’ PetShopBoys were lucky enough to meet one of our country’s most familiar faces. Her face plasters almost all corners of KL and around Malaysia. If you are traveling by car, you will never miss her! Amber is also internationally known for being a Guess Watch’s brand ambassador. Without hesitation, we asked her to be our front cover model along with our two cats, Kira and Kibbles. We are glad she agreed right away! PM: What is your first memory of animals or pets? AC: I grew up in a small town (Tawau) in Sabah so my life as a child was littered with pets. I had countless cats, white mice and even some birds which never did stay put! PM: So you took care of all of them? AC: With my family of course! I wouldn’t be able to do so alone. PM: So after you left Sabah, you didn’t bring any of your little friends along? AC: Unfortunately no. I could not afford to take care of them while I was starting up my career. The hectic schedules and frequent traveling gave me no time to spare at all. PM: So now that you more established, are you currently owning any pets? AC: Unfortunately no, but I am actually looking for one. I am looking for a golden retriever puppy to be exact. I used to stay in a condo so I was not able to own any pets during that time. Now that I have moved to a house, I can now again own one. PM: Ever since you were a child till now, do you think the pet industry has changed a lot in the past years? AC: Yes! Before they never had anything to actually pamper your pets. Now there is so many more things and places you can enjoy with your pet. Even the way people treat and take care of their pets are different now.
PM: Yes indeed it has changed much. So would you bring your furry friend wherever you go? AC: Of course! Provided that the places let my friend in that is! PM: So this being your first ever photo shoot with animals, how did it go for you? AC: Haha! It was a great experience! Though it does take some time for the cats to calm down and get in the right pose, it was good. I had to keep my pose long enough for the photographers to get the right photos of the cats - not me! I would definitely like to do it again! *Note: The cats were excellent models, though they were quite a handful during the session. Imagine 6 people meowing and making rattling noises with key chains and squeaky balls just to get both the cat’s attention. PM: Before we leave, do you have anything that you would like to share with all pet lovers out there? AC: I would like to give everyone a gentle reminder; Pets make life more interesting and will give you undying love and attention. So you should do the same for them too! If you choose to have a pet in your life, always make sure that you have the time, love, attention and warmth to give to them.

Ask Our VetO
Q. What are vaccinations? How does it help my dog? A. Vaccinations areVaccinestoavailable in ourdog fromnow meant prevent your contracting diseases. market
are more to combat viruses. The immune system of a newborn puppy is still young and inexperienced. Immune systems work by ‘learning’ about new diseases or viruses, and then finding out a way to combat them. What a vaccine does is to introduce weak, killed or disabled viruses to the puppy’s body, so that its immune system can learn how to combat them in the future. A normal puppy will gain some immunity from it’s mother after it is born. However, this immunity is only temporary and will wear off in about 5 - 6 weeks.
A 20 week old puppy will rely on it’s own immune system to combat viruses as by then, all immunity obtained from it’s mother will be gone. Without vaccinations, strong viruses that the puppy comes in contact with may overwhelm it’s immune system resulting in sickness or disease. Unvaccinated dogs can only develop a strong immune system by being exposed to viral attacks and survive it. By vaccinating your dog, it bypasses this risky exercise and prepares the dog’s immune system with ‘information’ and ways to prevent the viruses from multiplying or attacking its body. As we all know, viruses and diseases can mutate into stronger or more deadlier forms so it is advisable to vaccinate your pet on a regular basis. Some vaccines can wear off so do consult with your local vet on what should your dog receive throughout the course of it’s life. Here is a list of some common vaccinations that your dog should receive: Distemper Hepatitis or Adenovirus-2 Leptospirosis Parainfluenza Parvovirus Corona virus Bordetella Lyme Disease Giardia Rabies
Remember! It is NOT recommended to wait for your puppy to reach 20 weeks of age to get it vaccinated. It may be already too late.

Punishment & Your Dog
Positive Reinforcement and Negative Punishment are our primary dog training tools. They are effective and humane tools. However, Positive Punishment as a dog training tool must also be addressed. Now, keep in mind when we use the terms “positive” and “negative” that they are not meant as “good” or “bad.” They are used in a mathematical sense of add and subtract, or remove First, let us ask you, “What is the opposite of reward?” Common answers are “punishment” and “discipline.” However, the correct answer is “no reward.” The common answers highlight the confusion over punishment. More specifically, Positive Punishment means adding something to the dog’s environment that decreases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again. In dog training, punishment is exemplified in leash corrections, verbal reprimands, squirt bottles, penny cans, shock collars, throw chains, etc. Physical pain is not the only type of positive punishment that may be administered. Any unpleasant stimulus or unpleasant addition to the environment can constitute positive punishment. Along these lines, our training programs recommend that any positive punishment used on your pet should never be painful. Will punishment be an effective dog training tool for you? That depends. Physical punishment only suppresses behavior and is random in its success; some dogs will be responsive to punishment and others will not, and you won’t know until you try. Many practitioners of positive punishment dog training methods will tell you of their multiple successes, however you may not hear of the multiple failures they have experienced as well. Nor will you hear of the “fall-out” that occurs from such training methods, including defensive and/or fear-biting, aversion to the owner, aggression, etc. Beware. Far more common is the owner’s experience that when the threat of punishment is removed the unwanted behavior returns. To be effective, punishment must be: (1) sufficiently aversive (this will vary from dog to dog); (2) immediate; (3) delivered with every occurrence of the undesired behavior; and (4) followed by positively reinforcing a desired behavior. To be effective, punishment must occur each and every time the unwanted behavior occurs. Sporadic punishment will not communicate to the dog what the unwanted behavior is, it will simply be abusive. For example, if during commercial breaks chewing on the coffee table is punished, but the rest of the time it is not punished (and, in fact, is rewarding because it entertains the dog), the dog will not understand what behavior is being punished. To be effective, punishment must be followed by showing the dog what behavior it can perform that will be rewarded. When you suppress a behavior you create a behavioral void. You must fill that void with a desired behavior and reinforce it frequently. The dog learns that if s/he does behavior “A” s/he will be punished, but if s/he does behavior “B” s/he will be rewarded. With enough reinforcement of desired behavior “B” that behavior will replace undesired behavior “A.” Too often the trainer focuses on what the dog does wrong and not on what the dog does right or what the trainer would prefer the dog do. The dog must be taught what behavior it CAN do that will not be punished. Harsh and abusive positive punishments have drawbacks. While some dogs are malleable to being forced and punished, many are not and may suffer irreparable physical and mental damage. Aversion or fear of the punisher (you) may result. Or, the dog may become fearful of something else that was present in the environment when the punishment was administered. For example, a dog punished for barking while standing next to a chair may become frightened of the chair rather than associating barking with the punishment. Or, in suppressing a behavior you may unwittingly cause the dog to develop another behavior or make worse the behavior you are trying to suppress. Furthermore, you should never use punishment on any fear-based behaviors or aggression problems. You will make them worse. The bottom line is to avoid it. For these reasons, positive punishment should be your last resort. Instead, make every effort to train your dog using classical conditioning, positive reinforcement, negative punishment, In other words, use methods that will do no harm and do not risk making an existing problem worse or destroying your relationship and your dog’s trust.

Versio Venture: The Latest Venture in Pet Fashion Statements
Bringing ‘Fasionable Fashion’ to Pet Lovers all over!
Pet trends have been changing in our country. More and more people are taking to the examples available overseas, packing their furry friends into bags and strutting around town with them. To most, celebrities are the main point of reference. For instance, Paris Hilton the well-known ‘socialite’ brings her pooch just about everywhere she goes. With the growing trend being glamourised by well-known names, and the widespread coverage through television and movies, it is no surprise that the trend is catching on right here in our small part of the world. The traditional method of taking your pet out for a walk or just a stroll in the park is outdated. Discounting larger breeds, pets now enjoy the opportunity to get shipped in hip, stylish and fashionable transporters made of high quality cloth, pvc or even leather. These bags also come complete with soft insides to ensure that your pet travels in comfort. Besides being carried around in style, these lucky pets also get dressed up just like our kids! Apparel spanning from top and bottom wear, accessories like lavishly made collars and leashes to even head gear! Versio Venture is the sole distributor in Malaysia and Singapore for these fashionable brands like Petcare, Dobaz and JML. They distribute products of these brands ranging from apparel, shoes (yes, you got that right - pet shoes!) collars, leashes, carriers, bags, beds and even strollers (just like the one your newborn cousin is riding in). Versio Venture also carries its own house brand named ‘I-Pet’. The I-Pet range houses products just like the ones mentioned before. Their products go by the principle that all things made should have ‘form’ and ‘function’. Form and function meaning it must have quality and look great, while still maintaining workability. Versio Venture holds all rights over these brands and will take legal action if these brands were to be brought in by any one else. Versio Venture was established in 2003 and is based in the busy little island of Penang, with the aim of leading the trend in the pet fashion industry. They strive to continously provide solutions and products to fashion concious pet lovers all over Malaysia and Singapore. Ivy Ng, the merchandise executive added, “Trends are growing and its catching on fast all around town. Just look around pet lover’s communities and you will know what I’m talking about. Adoption goes Online!
A NEW glimmer of hope for homeless animals
Breaking news: Stray dogs and cats all around Malaysia were caught surfing a mysterious website in cyber cafes, posting their sweetest photos online in search of love and family! Well, we haven’t exactly masterminded such genetic breakthroughs yet, but a new website recently launched, PetFinder.my, has helped achieve a significant part of that goal. Founded by 2 veteran technopreneurs - Andy Koh and Ezer Ratchaga, this service was deeply inspired by Chanelle, a puppy that has unwittingly become a canine heroine among the homeless animals.
Ezer Ratchaga and Andy Koh
It all began on the fateful day of March 18th 2008, when Andy Koh and his friends stumbled across an injured stray puppy that met with an accident. Barely able to move and whining in pain, Andy quickly sent her to the vet. Diagnosed with a dislocated hind leg, her leg was bandaged in plaster cast. Together, they carefully nursed her back to health – but were unable to keep her as a family member was asthmatic. Andy desperately approached online forums, social networks and friends to seek adopters. The lucky break came when his buddy Ezer Ratchaga, a veteran in rescuing puppies, advised him to place classified ads in local newspapers. Inundated with enquiries, Andy successfully found a perfect match for Chanelle, a loving family that adored her like a princess. Inspired by the joy and success in saving Chanelle, and noticing the lack of reach and funds by independent rescuers, Andy and Ezer decided to develop PetFinder. my, dedicated to providing a one-stop portal for animal lovers, assisting homeless pets in seeking adopters, and providing NGOs and rescuers the necessary infrastructure to effectively reach out to the public. Within its first month of inception, PetFinder has enjoyed over 200,000 hits, and up till now has successfully rehomed over 90 pets, with the fastest record going to Coco, a Golden Retriever – Shih Tzu cross-breed that was rehomed within 35 minutes of posting up its adoption profile. “I’d like to thank you so much for your visionary efforts and continuous support for our cause! Response to our pets for adoption from Petfinder.my has been incredible!”, remarked Farida Mazlan, PR Officer of SPCA Selangor. A dedicated PetFinder volunteer, Ai Ney, has also relentlessly assisted the NGOs by photographing the pets and managing their adoption profiles online. Personally, she has successfully rehomed 2 rescued dogs through PetFinder. To keep up with the latest trends, PetFinder.my has newly released a Facebook application, where Facebook users can instantly feature homeless animals within their profiles and recommend specific pets to their friends. A Facebook PetFinder.my group has also been established to generate further activity and participation from pet lovers. A dynamic version for bloggers has also been made available. Further details on saving homeless pets via your Facebook account or blogs is available at http://www.petfinder. my/linktous.htm “There is a big, dedicated community of kind-hearted animal lovers out there, spending signifcant time and effort in helping the needy animals. They are the true, unsung heroes that have saved countless lives,” Andy explained, when asked on the success of PetFinder. As for the future plans, Ezer winked, “This is just the tip of the iceberg. We will be expanding PetFinder into a full-fledged portal for the pet lovers community – it’s coming soon!” Animal rescuers can publish their pets’ profiles for free at http://www.PetFinder. my/. The public can browse through cute dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits and birds listed there, as well as participate in PetFinder.my’s vibrant pet lover community and forums.

Essential Amino Acids:
Extra supplements for your dog’s well-being
It is always a controversial question when it comes to derermining the adequate quantity of protien a puppy or a mature breeding/non breeding, working or non working dog should consume for its entire maintenance and well-being requirement. It is important to note that puppies all the way till the become full-grown dogs all need protein (amino acids) thats 50% of their dry weight. Protein in their bodies is a major structural component that builds hair, skin, nails, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Many hormones that control the mechanisms of various systems in a dog’s body are composed of protein. Most importantly a dog’s immune system relies on antibodies that maintains their body’s resistance to disease which is composed of large protein molecules. Even the cells that carry oxygen in the bloodstream is made of protein. Emino RxC is specially formulated to deliver your dog the necessary amounts of protein to ensure that their bodily systems are all working in check. With this product, you will be able to give your dog added protein supplements to supply essential amino acids that your dog is dependent on. The extra protein that your dog ingests must be highly digestible, and that is what Emino RxC just is. It is liquid in form and does not contain any vile tastes that your dog might not enjoy. All it needs is 2 pumps of this protein supplement into their daily food intake and your dog will enjoy the benefits of added amino acids in their system. Just like humans when we ingest protein supplements, it helps us build muscle and provides us the ‘building blocks’ for our bodies to grow. Example: Bodybuilders eat extra protein supplements to help them fuel their increased muscle growth. With food alone, one’s body cannot obtain the necessary amount of protein for growth. Bodybuilders therefore eat more and consume protein supplements to ensure that they have sufficient amounts.
Processed food only provide a certain amount of protein which is normally not enough for very active dogs. Dogs are built to consume more raw foods.
to eat a whole lot to your dog doesn’t need high keep it’s protein levels
Supplements are good for your dog’s growth ----->
These amino acids in protein also aid in your dog’s digestive track, keeping their systems in great-running condition. This allows your dog to digest and break down food products better, giving them the necessary vitamins and minerals for their growth. Emino RxC can be found is almost all pet stores nationwide. Remember before you buy any supplements for your dog, do consult with your vet first to ensure that your dog is able to cope with the added protein intake. A Hairy Problem
Balls of hair! What is it? Hairballs, or what scientists call them ‘trichobezoar’, is a bunch of undigestable hair stuck in your cat’s stomach or intestines.
ChitChat Cat
Hairballs and your cat’s health
Though they are called ‘balls’, hairballs are not exactly circular in shape. Most are look like sausages. Hair that gets ingested normally will excape your cat’s body through their stool (or more commonly known as shit). Some hair however may get stuck in your cat’s digestive system, building up to form the hairball. How do hairballs form in my cat? Cats clean themselves by primarily using their tongues. Their tongues contain a rough surface of microscopic ‘hooks’ which enable them to eat and clean themselves. When they lick themselves clean, some of the loose hairs will enter their digestive system thus creating a collection of undigestable hairs which will clump together over time.
A ‘hair-sausage’... yuck...
What problems will my cat face? Your cat will face the following problems if there is excessive amounts of hair stuck in their digestive system: - Gagging or Coughing - Vomiting - Constipation - Diarrhea - Loss of Appetite - A swollen abdomen These symptoms can lead to weight loss and ultimately affect your cat’s health because it will not be eating much or receiving the necessary nutritions. How dangerous can it be? Hairballs are a norm in a cat’s life but it can be dangerous. If it becomes too large, it may block your cat’s digestive system, causing it to suffer diet problems. If the hairball problem gets too serious, the only way to remove the hairball is via surgery. What can I do to help? You will never be able to stop your cat from licking so what you can do to help is groom it. By helping your cat remove loose furs, you can prevent the excess hairs from getting consumed. You can also ensure that your cat’s diet contains high fiber foods. This can help in the digestion of these hairballs, enabling it to pass through when your cat visits the toilet.

It’s MEOW time!
Our Furry Friends
What to do and what not do
My Hammy is giving birth to Baby Hammies!
OMG she’s giving birth! What am I to do!? If you are one of the lucky people that get a chance to witness this amazing process, there are a few things to keep note of about your new mama hammy and babies. No touchy! The first thing that you should keep in mind is that you are not to touch the mother or the newborn babies at all. If you do, the mother hamster will have a high chance of eating her young. This a natural defence mechanism to protect herself and her babies. If her young do not smell familiar or end up sick, they will end up as a meal. If you suspect your hamster is expecting soon, make sure you do not have any physical contact with her. You are to not clean the cage and it is important that the cage is kept in a quiet and undisturbed area. You hamster’s diet should consist of high protein foods like eggs and milk. Just add these additions to her bowl somewhere near her so she can access it easily. Remember! If you are to put your hand in the cage, do rub your hand in the bedding first before touching any items to ensure that your smell remains the same as the rest of the cage. After your hamster has given birth, you should not handle or touch the mother for a few days before she gives birth. Just sit back and observe for anything. Sometimes the mother can abandoned one of their babies. If this happens, take a spoon, rub it in the bedding so that it smells familiar and use it to move the baby near the mother. The mother may realise that she left this one out and will continue to take care of it. Baby hamsters will be able to start roaming around (though still blind because their eyes have not opened yet) as old as 10 days. Even though it may seem harmless but you will still not be able to touch them. There is still a chance that the mother may get scared and that will be the end for the little ones. It is about time In about 14 to 16 days, the babies would have their eyes open. At this moment you may gently handle them but remember to rub your fingers in the bedding first before proceeding to make contact. From this point onwards, you may gently remove the hamsters to a temporary cage before cleaning the main cage. If the cage is left uncleaned for any longer, bacteria lingering around the cage may cause illnesses to the baby hamsters. When the babies have reached the age of 4 weeks, the males and females MUST be separated. This is to prevent any of the hamsters from getting pregnant again (yes hamsters are quite ‘hardworking’). It is also important to separate all of them from each other to prevent fights. Give them a few weeks in solitary homes before you allow them to mix together (of course, males with males, and females with females...unless you want another batch of babies). Making them stay separately at first is to ensure that all hamsters are given time to grow without any intervention from the bigger or stronger ones. Allowing them to stay together may run your new hamsters into a contest of ‘survival of the fittest’ which may result in death for the weaker ones. Now that your know what to do, enjoy the new additions to your hamster family!

Birdie T alk
Wing Clipping
Controlling your pet bird’s license to fly
Clip? Or should I let my bird keep its flying license? When one asks themselves whether to clip your avian friend or not, it is usually a mixed affair. When you clip your bird’s wings, you will benefit from safety, ease of training and it will also rest your worries about your feathered pet’s untimely escape to the open skies. On the flip side of it, you may be worried that your bird would be depressed about not being able to do what it is born to do which is to fly. Ultimately it is up to you to decide on what is best for your pet and yourself. We can only provide you with some views about clipping to aid in your decision. Clip Safety People normally keep their pet birds indoors and in a cage. Occasionally, they would be let out of the cage to roam freely and enjoy the wonders of the modern household that is packed with lots of fun things to do (playing with pens, discovering hidden areas, etc..). The modern household however, holds many interesting but potentially dangerous hazards. Open electric sockets, glass bottles, hot surfaces, strings, ceiling or stand fans and glass windows are just a few which can be named. By clipping your pet you can control its movements because it is unable to zip around the house quick enough. Ease of taming Because clipping allows owners to monitor and control the movements of their pets, it is therefore easier to bond with your pet as it will be more dependent on the owner. This dependency will allow the bird to trust the owner much more readily when compared to those that are able to fly because they have to. Bye bye my good friend Escaping is by far the biggest worry that all bird owners will face. Birds are naturally attracted to the open so they do and will have a tendency to escape if given the chance. if Clipping your bird’s wings will disallow it to fly far or high, keeping it’s flight only within t frustrated Birds can ge household grounds. to fly around not allowed Unclipped Born to fly Birds as we all know it, are creatures of the sky and it Clip Here should remain that way. When birds have their wings clipped, it discourages them to move about therefore reducing their exercise time. This may affect its health Coverts if it eats too much and does not receive a healthy dose of good old fashion exercise. Owners with big cages are more inclined to keep their pets unclipped because they have the space and room to allow their pets to fly Primaries about.
Secondaries
If you are interested in clipping your pet bird. Follow this diagram. A bird’s wing is divided into 3 parts - the Primaries which is the main feathers for flight, Secondaries for stability and lastly, the Coverts which cover the first two. To clip, you should only cut the Primaries. Make sure you have someone else to help secure and hold down your pet to prevent any accidents. DO NOT cut more than 5 feathers off the Primaries as this will disallow the bird to not even be able to take off the ground. Be careful of new feathers which still contain blood vessels and have not yet hardened. If you are still unsure how to do it, do seek advice from an expert!
In any case, clipping or leaving your pet unclipped boils directly down to the owner’s attitude and how the owner keeps their pet. If you strongly believe that your bird should be allowed to enjoy the wonderful gift of flight, then by all means leave your pet unclipped. If you believe that it is safer for your bird to remain grounded and be under your watchful eye, clip them. It all plays around with the bond and relationship you have with your pet. For any decision made, be sure to love your pet and enjoy a long lasting and rewarding relationship with your feathered friend.

Arowanas: $$$ Fish
The ever-popular Arowana...What are they all about?
For eras, the Chinese and other related cultures have regarded the arowana fish as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The Chinese say that the arowana fish resembles the majestic and wise Chinese Dragon which has been depicted in many fables, stories and folklores. Because of this auspicious look, arowana fishes are also used for ‘Feng Shui’ purposes to bring good luck and wealth to the owner. To date, only 10 living species of arowanas were classified: 3 from South America, 1 from Africa, 4 from Asia, and 2 from the land down under, Australia. The scientific name for arowana fish is called ‘Osteoglossid’. These fish normally grow up to 3 to 4 feet in length (in captivity) and are also surface feeders. This means that they take their meals from the top of the water’s surface. This is evident due to the contruction of their large jaw that aims in an upwards fashion, which is also equipped with tiny razor sharp teeth. Arowanas too are carnivorous fish and will feed on smaller prey. Arowanas too have a tendency to prey on larger non-aquatic prey like bats and birds. These fish are capable of jumping out of the water’s surface to snap at their unsuspecting meals up in branches or if they so happen to fly really low. Keeping an Arowana is not easy. Arowanas typically need a fairly large tank which allows them to swim in all directions. A basic 1200mm to 1500mm x 750mm tank is needed for an average arowana to feel comfortable inside. Remember, the smaller the tank, the smaller your fish is going to be as it has not enough room to grow. Arowanas are typically solitary fish and you should only keep one per tank to prevent fights. Decor in the tank should be kept to a bare minimum because these fish are pretty ferocious while feeding. For feeding, peeled prawns, worms, insects, other smaller (cheap) fish are the normal variety for your fishy friend. Why we say keeping arowanas is not that easy, is because you would have to change their water more often when compared to your normal pet fishes. Weekly water changes are encouraged as arowanas are sensitive to chlorine.
Arowanas start life looking like this. Reminds you of those small ‘ikan bilis’ in nasi lemak right?
