While main personality traits are easily seen, some traits must be carefully pieced together through careful analysis of that particular character’s reaction to circumstances. In Frankenstein, Victor, Walton, and the Creature all demonstrate a similar set of Promethean characteristics. However, the Creature’s personality can most easily be determined by his prototypical promethean characteristics. To fully understand the Creature’s character, it is important to look directly at examples and actions from the text. For example, while staying at the house of Felix and Agatha, the Creature collects wood at night in an effort to help the family. This desire to help shows the creature’s helpfulness in a promethean style. Also, this example shows his desire to fit in to the family, and serve them in an unseen manner. Likewise, the Creature found books about literature studying the English language, and he listened to the dialect of the family to gain a deeper insight into the language. Therefore, his dedication to learning this foreign tongue shows his persistence and determination through a nearly impossible feat. Furthermore, the Creature knew that if he became intelligent enough he could surpass his appearance barrier and intellectually converse
with humankind. Overall, these two examples are just the beginning to all the ways the Creature exemplifies that he is a promethean character deep within. Without question, the Creature has a personality filled with desperation to fit in with his surroundings, and he is willing to do whatever necessary to fulfill that loneliness. In the world today, much of us can closely relate to the hideous creature in that we invest ourselves into anything that will create a feeling of security and happiness in our hearts.
