Anniversary of the Riga Castle
RIGA CASTLE:
FOREIGN ART MUSEUM
NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LATVIA
Pils laukums

For the first time, Night of Museums visitors will be able to view the 14th/15th
century castle rooms as a unified complex. Today, the Riga Castle houses the office of
President of the Republic of Latvia Valdis Zatlers and his Chancery, as well as the
Foreign Art Department of the Latvian National Museum of Art and the National
History Museum of Latvia.
Latvian Post will also take part in the Night of Museums by giving each visitor the
opportunity to send a letter adorned with a specially designed stamp for the Night of
Museums Post.

90 Years of the Art Museum at the Riga Castle

The Art Museum in the Republic of Latvia (1918 – 1940) – opportunity to learn about

Belmanes bērni (Belmane’s Children) (New Art Lover’s Society) in the museum’s
Velvju Hall – the history of the museum through memories and stories.

Installation Mēs aizejam (We’re Going) – a symbolic beginning to the museum’s
transition to its new quarters in the Riga Stock Market building.

participation of representatives from the Riga Castle Restoration Council.

18.00–24.00 Castle tour. Visitors are given the opportunity to tour both the old and
new sections of the Castle on a special route created by Castle staff.

During the tour, Night of Museums visitors to the National History Museum of Latvia
can view the exhibition Rotaļlietu noslēpumi pilī (Toy Secrets at the Castle) and the
specially designed express-exhibit Lāči nāk! (The Bears Are Coming!) (the Teddy
bear collection of actress A. Kantāne), as well as the permanent exhibit. The littlest
visitors will be delighted by the series of books on animals from the Publisher Liels
un mazs.
The lounge Pie dzelzs bruņinieka will be open during the Night of Museums.

The room of horrors of the museum world.
Uncover the hidden side of the museum! Take a one-way journey through the
museum’s basement chambers, which are locked up during the day. See all the things
that won’t be brought back to the light.
The basement resonates with off-key songs and dingy words. Here you can find the
museum’s “clean” inhabitants. Visitors will have the opportunity to leave the room of
relics with some kind of memento from the museum’s collection – with clean hands
and a clear conscience!

18.00 Golden songs. Musician Julgī Stalte will tell the story of gold in Latvian folk
songs and the folk group Skandenieki will bring these songs to live.

19.00–24.00 Exhibition Zelta darbi (Golden Works). The exhibition includes more
than 200 works of art, from icons to installations. The exhibition is a conceptual art
project that aims to bring to light the discussion on materials and spiritual values
throughout several time periods.

Night of Museums visitors will be greeted in the vestibule of the exhibition hall by
birdsong.

contains decorative Latvian art from the end of the 19th century to today. In viewing
the works of art and the museum’s interesting architectural elements, visitors will be
able to share in their findings of what they’ve seen in the museum’s habitat and tour
the museum’s creative workshops.

19.00–23.00 Screen-printing creative workshop. Use the ancient language of
decorative symbols to decorate cloth and create accessories. Participants are
recommended to bring their own cloth/material (participation fee LVL 1.50).

Wool felting creative workshop in the 3rd floor vestibule. Here, each participant will
have the opportunity to create accessories like those seen in the museum’s design
habitat (participation fee LVL 1.50).

19.00–22.00 Decoupage workshop in the 2nd floor vestibule. Here, participants will
use resourceful technological methods to give old objects a new and attractive image
(participation fee LVL 1.50).

exhibition on sports in Latvia – from the distant past to the recent past. We have
something to be proud of!

Latvija Baltajās olimpiādēs (Winter Olympics in Latvia): Latvian athlete starts in the
Winter Olympic Games (Olympic records, Olympic equipment, Olympic fashion and
Olympic talismans).

Children and youths can experience fun and an athletic rush by climbing the rock wall
to reach the peak of the Oliņkalns cliffs (20 metres high) over the Daugava River.

Visitors will be able to learn about the rallies held by environmental activists at the
end of the 20th century that were dedicated to ecological issues – Lūgšana par jūru (A
Prayer for the Sea), Daugava mūsu tautas likteņupe (The Daugava, our River of
Destiny), and the Sloka demonstration Par tīru Lielupi un Baltijas jūru (For a Clean
