TREASURE YOUR MIND DAY / WEEK

Why mental wellbeing at the workplace?
We spend an average of 8 hours each day at our place of work, and for much of our
waking moments among people we work with. It makes perfect sense that the
workplace environment be conducive to optimizing our sense of mental wellbeing.

Happy employees are more productive, energized and creative in problem solving.
They take fewer days of sick leave and are more optimistic about their future. A
mentally healthy workplace means its employees feel good about themselves, the
work they do, and the people they work with.

Organise a Treasure Your Mind (TYM) Day
This is a wonderful opportunity for workplaces to show, in concrete action, that every
employee’s mental wellbeing matters! It starts with wanting to do something about
it, making small changes in the way we do things, keeping them going and allowing
the big differences to happen.

An easy way to get all your employees to start thinking about their mental wellbeing
is to start with a simple to do activity.

We call it the ‘Mind Your Relationship Movement’.

                                                  TREASURE YOUR MIND DAY
                                                                        October 2008

Small Actions x Lots of People =
                                                         BIG DIFFERENCES

The Mind Your Relationship Movement is an activity which all employees can
participate. Everyone is encouraged to carry out actions (we have provided a starter
list) that will contribute to a conducive environment where relationships matter. The
more people participate, the greater is the difference.

For instance, if every employee sends or writes a feel good note to two other
persons, 50 employees would have generated 100 “good feelings” for one another
on this day! The point is to mark this day as a constant reminder that mental
wellbeing begins with small gestures to mind our relationships.

To help you organise the MYR Movement on TYM Day, we have put together a TYM
Resource Pack and a simple step-by-step TYM Day-MYR Movement Guide to help you
plan. Alternatively, you can organise similar activities at your workplace – simply
share with us how you intend to commemorate the day.

Organizing the TYM Day-MYR Movement

PREPARATION
1 Collect your TYM Kit of resource materials (items 1 to 5)
(a) What’s the Felt Board for?
The felt board is for you to record the day’s tally of Small Actions of Change.
Dress it up (be daring and creative!), put up the 10 starter cards of Small
Actions, and draw up a grid on paper or any other material to record the
     day’s Small Actions of Change.

2 Devise a method for each employee to put “his or her stamp” on the MYR
Board to say “Hey, I took this action!” along side the Action cards.
         You can try using :
         (a) a thumb print with initials written on it
         (b) a sticker
         (c) a smiley icon
         (d) a tick
         (e) a paper clip

3 Decide how you want to share the list below with your employees e.g.
intranet, email, large notice board etc.
Good to periodically announce the progress (choose a method most viable) –
the key is to share with the4m

IMPLEMENTATION
STEP 1 – Creating Awareness
Send out emails or put up notices to all your employees to generate a buzz about the
upcoming event.
You should include an announcement of the “MYR Movement”, a brief description of
what they can expect and to do, any incentives (e.g. prizes to be won) and time
frame.

For example :
Put up a banner of the MYR Movement with a series of short blurbs (see suggestions
for announcements) to generate excitement, build interest and set the stage for the
Day.

                                                                  14 October 2008
                                                               10am @The Staff Lounge

Small Actions x Lots of People =
                                                         BIG DIFFERENCES

                                                                                                                4

1st announcement
Why Treasure Your Mind Day?
Happy employees are more productive, energized and creative in problem solving.
They take fewer days of sick leave and are more optimistic about their future.
Look out for more updates on this space.
The ‘Mind Your Relationship Movement’ starts on XX Oct 2008.

2nd announcement
The Little things at work that we do for ourselves and for one another can make
a Big difference. You would be pleasantly surprised how little effort and time is
required to make good things happen, right from your seat and all around your
workplace!
The ‘Mind Your Relationship Movement’ starts on XX Oct 2008.

3rd announcement
Relationships make the world of difference to your mental wellbeing. We
can all start with a simple action that makes us, and people we work with feel good.
Imagine how each small change x lots of us = big difference to our mental
wellbeing!
The ‘Mind Your Relationship Movement’ starts on XX Oct 2008.

STEP 2 – Open the Day with a Bang!
Find a suitable platform that you can officially declare TYM Day open. It will be a
bonus if the CEO or members of the senior management team can take part by
making the first Small Action of Change.

For instance, the CEO can “send a feel good email to all staff”
- you can synchronise your announcement to kick off the Movement with the CEO’s
email or
- your workplace set up does not support email for this action, perhaps a notice
board for workers to write and post their notes on it will work
(Think of something viable based on your organizational set up and resources)

Distribute the MYR 360 degree token to every employee. Encourage them
to display it prominently at their work area.

STEP 3 – Track the Movement
Set a target and aim high! You’d then need to encourage the staff to work towards
it. (Hint : special recognition incentives may work – e.g. employee who did the most
of the list of actions, employee who came up with most ingenuous new actions etc.)

Track the actions taken periodically. It is important the staff is kept updated on how
well they are doing. For example, at a 3 hourly interval, announce the
accomplishment so far, or if the numbers are falling behind your targets, you need to
work on getting more participation.

                                                                                                                5

STEP 4 – Spice it Up!
You may be anxious about participation. Well, we are likely to follow a trend after
someone gets it going.

- Get a handful of your co-workers to kick-start the Movement.
- Incorporate a contest to incentivize participation, or just for the sheer fun of it!
- Give out prizes (they need not be extravagant ones) for the 5 most imaginative
Small Actions, the person who took the most number of Small Actions, the most
creative ways of carrying out the Actions etc.

STEP 5 - Celebrate Success!
At the end of TYM Day or Week, celebrate the achievement. Staff should be made
to feel proud of their achievement.
You can
- display the results in a prominent location
- highlight how possible it is for everyone to keep up the movement beyond TYM
  Day/Week
- designate a day / days to repeat the Small Action(s) that have scored the highest
participation rate

STEP 6 – Keep Up the Momentum!
Now that you got your staff interested in mental wellbeing, pick up the momentum
by getting them involved in optimizing their individual mental wellbeing. Take full
advantage of this opportunity to weave in more mental wellbeing messages which
will not only increase their knowledge, but also give them skills to up their mental
wellbeing.

- Arrange to have the Cultivating A Healthy Mind Talk and/or TYM Workshops
- Launch a new workplace wellbeing initiative / policy (e.g. a new lounge, massage
chairs, rest & relax room)
- Form a mental wellbeing workgroup/committee to look into continuing efforts to
nurture a mentally health workplace

EVALUATION
Collect Feedback and Act on It
To access how ell a programme is received, what worked and what did not, it is
important to devise some way(s) to gather feedback. You could focus on the number
of participants as an indicator of the participation rate. Obtain qualitative feedback
for how your staff feel about the organisation’s effort, how much difference this
event make, and what would they like to see happening in the near future.
You may wish to share this feedback with us.

                              SMALL ACTIONS OF CHANGE

1 Send a feel good email to as many colleagues as you can

2 Leave work on time to see the blue sky, and spend time with your family

3 For every other hour you are at work, think and write down one thing you
            like about yourself

4 For every good thing you write about yourself, write one about any of
            your colleagues

5 Volunteer to do something which is not normally in your scope of work

6 Greet everyone you meet with a “I’m feeling good, how about you?” smile

7 Do something for nothing - everyone appreciates a helping hand

8 Share something you have with your colleague (your lunch, fruit, an extra
            pencil, latest movie information etc)

9 Find at least two other colleagues who share your hobby or interest

10 Commit yourself to do these actions frequently over the next 6 months
