A person can be said to be suffering from Panic Attack Disorder if they are repeatedly experiencing a heightened sense of fear that is
out of proportion to the situation accompanied with some of the following symptoms:
      Rapid heartbeat;
      Trembling;
      Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet;
      Breathing too deep or too shallow;
      Light headed;
      Excessive perspiration;
      Hot or cold flushes.
If you think that you may be a sufferer then you may be surprised to learn that many millions of people are suffering along with you. In fact
in the United States alone approximately six million people each year experience panic attacks.
These attacks occur suddenly and create a great deal of anxiety for the sufferer. They usually last about 10 minutes but in some people
the attack can last as little as 1 or 2 minutes or as long as 20 minutes. Still other people may experience 'rolling' attacks where a new
attack commences just as the last attack is finishing.
It may be able to be seen by now that the way each persons body reacts during a Panic Attack is totally unique. Anyone who thinks that
they may be suffering from Panic Attack Disorder should seek medical advice as soon as possible in order to rule out any possible heart
problems.
While the Panic Attack itself is not normally life threatening left untreated this disorder can result in a wide variety of complications which
can seriously affect quality of life. For example over one-third of people with Panic Attack Disorder also suffer from Agoraphobia (fear of
public or open areas). Other complications can also include phobias depression substance abuse medical complications and even
suicide.
Treatment can be approached with medication or with Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. Often a combined approach has the best results.
Many people are attracted to the medicative approach due to the rapid relief but the role of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy in alleviating
and even curing Panic Attack Disorder should not be overlooked.
