        What is FORTRAN?
• It was derived from the words, Formula
  Translating System.
• It is a programming system created to
make it easier to write programs.
• It is a general purpose programming
  language, best for numeric computation.
    Who created FORTRAN?
• John Backus, an IBM employee thought it
would be a great idea to create a more
  efficient alternative to assembly language
for programming the IBM 704 mainframe
  computer.
When was FORTRAN Created?
The IBM Mathematical Formula translating
system was completed in the middle of
1954 and the first manual appeared in
 October 1956.
Early Fortran reference manual
 Why is FORTRAN Important?
• Use of FORTRAN is important for
  scientists when writing numerically
intensive programs because it included a
complex number data type which was
perfect for tech. applications such as
  engineering.
• It is the first widely used programming
  system.
          Today’s version
• Many versions were made, and over time
many versions have been expanded. The
latest version is today’s FORTRAN 2008,
which is a revised 2003 version. It has
  new capabilities like:
• --Co-array FORTRAN- a parallel
  processing model (revised 2003 version)
• --BIT data type
