Introduction
Novell Evolution Connector for Exchange (formerly Ximian Connector), when used in
conjunction with Evolution is a fully featured Exchange client available for various UNIX
platforms. It provides direct access to all e‐mail, contacts, calendar information and
public folders stored on the Exchange servers. It also enables UNIX users to schedule
meetings more easily with other Exchange users by making available the free/busy time of
all staff who maintain diaries on the system.
Both the functionality and the interface are similar to those provided by Microsoft Outlook
on a Windows platform.
Evolution and the Exchange Connector are now available free of charge by download
from the Novell Web site. See:
http://www.novell.com/products/evolution/ and
http://www.novell.com/products/connector/
for further information.
Binaries are available for the following versions of UNIX:
SUSE LINUX 8.2, 9.0
SUSE LINUX Desktop 1.0
Red Hat Linux 7.3, 8.0, 9.0
Linux Mandrake 9.1
Sun Solaris 8 (SPARC)(requires Sun GNOME 2)
and the source code is now available under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
This document is intended to assist users in configuring the software within the
University’s Exchange environment. It does not cover either the installation, which may
vary between platforms, or the use of the software. There are comprehensive user guides
for the Evolution software at:
http://gnome.org/projects/evolution/documentation.shtml
ISS will endeavour to provide further advice and support where possible. Please contact
the Helpdesk in the first instance.
Before proceeding with the configuration, you must already have an Exchange mailbox.
All members of University Staff and Research Postgraduates are eligible for an account. If
you would like one creating please fill in an ISS username form, countersigned by your
departmental user rep, and pass it to the ISS Helpdesk.
It you have not previously connected to your Exchange account, it may be prudent to do
so using Outlook Web Access at http://outlook.leeds.ac.uk/. This will confirm that the
account is active and that you have the correct username and password.

Configuring Evolution Connector
1. The first time Evolution is run after
installation, the configuration wizard
should be displayed:
If not, you can start up the wizard
manually with the command:
ximian-connector-setup
On the Welcome screen, click Forward
2. Enter the following details into the
Exchange Configuration dialogue
box:
NOTE: It is not necessary to know
which Exchange Server hosts your
personal mailbox, this will be corrected
automatically. Just enter:
http://hermes1.leeds.ac.uk/exchange
If you are connecting from outside the
University, replace the OWA URL with:
http://outlook.leeds.ac.uk/exchange
Click Forward
3. Occasionally, the connector is unable
to identify a Global Catalog server,
required in order to provide
University Address Book
information. If this dialog box
appears, enter the server name:
dd01.leeds.ac.uk
Click Forward
-3-
4. Next, enter your name and e‐mail
address:
Check the box to “Make this my default
account”
5. This completes the configuration
Click Apply
Evolution will now open
and attempt to connect to
the Exchange server. Select
and expand the set of
folders identified by your e‐
mail address:
If the configuration wizard completed successfully, your software should now be correctly
configured for the University Exchange environment.
However, if the connection fails or other problems become apparent it may be necessary to
review and update the settings manually. These are detailed in the following section.
-4-
Review the Settings
To review the configuration,
select Settings... from the
Tools menu. This will
display the Evolution
Settings dialogue box:
Select Mail Accounts in the
left hand pane, highlight the
Exchange account and click
Edit
Select the Receiving Mail
tab.
If you are within the
University, the Exchange
Server should be either
hermes1, hermes2, hermes3,
hermes4 or for Central
Administration users
hermes5.leeds.ac.uk. This
will have been automatically
populated by the
configuration wizard and
should be correct.
If you are outside the
University, the Exchange
server should be
outlook.leeds.ac.uk.
You can also use outlook.leeds.ac.uk from within the University, but better performance
will be achieved by connecting directly to your home HERMES server.
-5-
Next, select the Receiving
Options tab
The Global Catalog server name
should be set to dd01.leeds.ac.uk.
We have 6 global catalog servers
in total, dd01.leeds.ac.uk to
dd06.leeds.ac.uk. If you
experience slow performance
retrieving names from the
address book, try entering a
different server name.
Depending on your installation, you may also experience problems if too many entries are
returned during an Address Book search. This can be remedied by checking the “Limit
number of GAL responses” and entering a figure of, say, 500.
Finally, select the Sending Mail
tab.
The Server Type should be set to
Microsoft Exchange
All other settings can be left on their default values.
