FTP – File Transfer Protocol

from one computer to another. A username and a password is required to access a FTP site. Publicly accessible FTP servers are called anonymous FTP servers.

you can get the same results by writing google CTRL + ENTER Shift Click on a link opens the link in a new browser window. Turning off pictures in web browser options reduces the amount of data transferred and increases speed. While printing web pages, background pictures should not be printed to save Ink!

Internet but none can match the impact of e-mail Defined as the exchange of messages and computer files between computers over a computer network. The network can be as small as a local area network (LAN) or it can be as large as Internet that spans the world. The cost of email is very less & is same for email destined to any place world.

Free Email sites like Hotmail, Yahoo provide free email access. One has to bear with the advertisements for free services. Mailbox size is limited. ( 2 MB to 10MB)

Works on Post Office Protocol. An POP client software (Outlook Express) is required to access mails. Emails can be downloaded into local computers.

its advisable to send a BCC. The To field is deleted at the recipient side

Attachments from unknown
persons should not be opened. .DOC, .XLS, .SCR, .EXE, .PIF, .VBS, .COM, .REG are unsafe & can contain viruses. Sending .TXT and .RTF files should be encouraged. Antivirus software with latest updates should be present.

Email Viruses use address book to
send its copies to all users. This can be dangerous because emails goes from your name. To avoid this – In address book create an entry with name !000 and blank email address. Email software will block the email if virus sends a mail to this address.

What to do if a virus infects
Isolate your machine from network.
Unplug the network cable of your machine immediately. Perform a clean boot (boot from a clean floppy diskette) Run the Virus Scanner Keep regular backup of data onto CDROM. Never share folders with WRITE access
General Internet Usage Tips
Sharing software: Its better to copy Virus
definitions, Yahoo Messenger etc from a colleague who has the latest version rather than everyone downloading from the Internet. Sharing photographs: Instead of sending photographs to everyone through emails its better to upload them on yahoo photos & send the link to all persons.
