Dreamweaver Tips A few pointers to make creating your website easier Keyboard Shortcuts Control + Z Undo: This is a lifesaver. Shift + Enter Single spaced return: Cursor goes down one line. To Make New Pages File ‐> New ‐> click on the Template Tab Select “Teacher” Click “Create” To Save Your New Page File ‐> Save As ‐> Browse to your web folder (same as your last name) ‐> whateveryouwantwithinreason.html* *You should not use capital letters, spaces or funny characters (%,~<$) for any file available on the web. Doing so may create broken links. Save pictures or files in a separate folder inside your web folder to keep things organized. To create a new folder right click on your web folder and select “New Folder”. Linking Your Pages Together In order to link pages they have to exist. First create all the pages you can; then link them together. To link a page, type some text for the title of the link (i.e. Home) on your page and highlight it. Use the crosshairs next to the Link bar and drag them to the file you want to link. Make sure every page can at least get back to your home page. Creating Email Links To create a link to an Email address, type some text for the title of the link (i.e. email@example.com) on your page and highlight it. Type: mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org into the link bar. There should be no space between “mailto:” and the email address. It is helpful to use the email address as the text for the link rather than “Contact Me” or “Email” because some browsers do not work with web mail (Gmail/hotmail) and people must copy and paste email addresses. Sharing Files If you want to share files on your website (like full versions of classroom newsletters created in Office 2007) you need to do so in the PDF format (it opens Adobe Reader). Do not post files as .doc, .docx, .xls etc, many people can’t view the files. In Office 2007 programs, you can save in the PDF format when you “Save As”, simply pick it from the drop down of file types. If you want to share a Power Point Presentation that plays, save the file as a Power Point Show. It is an option when you “Save As” just like the PDF’s. If you have a file that you want to share but can’t get it to convert to a PDF, please let your LMC or Tech Support person know. A Note About Fonts Century Gothic, Helvetica, sans‐serif is the font on the school pages. Meaning, if a web browser doesn’t support Century Gothic it will display the text in Helvetica or a generic sans‐serif (Serifs are the nubbins on fonts like Times and Courier. Sans‐serifs fonts have no nubbins) if it can’t display Helvetica. This set of fonts was chosen for readability. You may pick your own font, but the template can overwrite it.
