EVALUATING INTERNET RESOURCES
Unlike magazines, journals, and books, most information on the Internet is not edited or peer-reviewed. So, it is important to be aware of the following criteria when evaluating information that you find on the Web
Authority
• Who is the author of the information? • Is the author the original creator of the information? • Does the author list his or her occupation, years of experience, position, education, or other credentials?
Affiliation
• • • •
What institution supports this web site? If it is a commercial site, does the author appear to have any connection with a larger institution? Does the institution appear to exercise quality control over the information appearing under its name? Does the author’s affiliation with this particular institution appear to bias the information? When was the information created or last updated? Is the purpose of this information, to inform, to explain, or to persuade?

SEARCH ENGINES
SUBJECT DIRECTORIES
Search engines are indexes that allow you to use keyword searching to find information on the Internet. There are many search engines. Although they are similar, they may produce different results, and the way you enter your search terms may vary. It is a good idea to try more than one, and to try different combinations of key words (search terms), if you don’t find what you seek the first time you try. To learn about search engines and how they operate, try the Search Engine Watch web site (www.searchenginewatch.com/). The Spider’s Apprentice (www.monash.com/ spidap.html) is a guide to Boolean (keyword) searching techniques that can help you develop and refine your searching skills. You might want to try the following search engines: Google www.google.com Metacrawler* www.metacrawler.com Dogpile* www.dogpile.com AltaVista www.altavista.com Excite www.excite.com Hotbot hotbot.lycos.com Lycos www.lycos.com * These are metasearch engines, which send your search to several search engines, then organize the results into a unified format.
These guides organize Web pages into broad subject categories, similar to the subject catalog in a library. They are good tools for an overview of a subject, or for browsing the Web. Here are a couple major subject guides: Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com/) The Virtual Library (http://vlib.org)
