Susan Oyston email: Regarding your email, yes I have seen the downturn in the construction industry in Ireland (I attended a jobsfair in Cork a few months ago and met a few civil engineers then), and I think it is being repeated here in the UK also. The numbers of building trades people being laid off is rising as the recession bites, and house building companies seem to have been particularly hit here. However, on the Jobcentre Plus site www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk, there are as you noted, still some opportunities for civil and structural engineers, in many different sectors, including water management, energy industry etc. I found several that may interest some of your graduates including the following reference numbers: LCR/35080 Civil/Water Engineer (Leicester) salary £25 - £35 + benefits (looking for graduates as well as experienced hence salary range) THN/15173 Structural Engineer (Stockton on Tees, Cleveland) salary negotiable (no previous experience required) LPP/28846 Assistant Engineer (Leeds area, west Yorkshire) salary £23,749 £27,594 per annum GLA/109024 Site Engineer (Glasgow City Centre) salary £22,000 - £30,000 per annum + car and benefits (looking to recruit a range of qualified civil engineers)
DAR/39882 Site Engineer (Dartford - working nationally) salary negotiable (site/civil engineers at ALL levels sought for projects across the UK including the next phase of the tram system in Manchester, the London Gateway Port and a number of new build and refurbishment projects on power stations across the UK) GLA/109038 Graduate Structural Engineer (Glasgow) salary £19,000 £23,000 per annum SOO/31998 Graduate Engineer (Stockport, Cheshire) salary £18,450 £26,928 per annum (positions for graduates to gain broad-based experience in highway, bridges and public realm design) The above can be looked at on the Jobcentre Plus website as mentioned before and applied for directly. There are many other positions being advertised as well, but large numbers of them are requiring post graduate experience to various degrees, and there are large numbers of senior and principal engineers required still. I do think things will get tougher in the UK in the current climate, but as shown above, there are still opportunities available, just maybe not quite so many, and it very often depends on their speciality/experience post graduate level. Regarding the processes for applying for these and any other vacancies, it will be a case that the graduates will need to wade through the site and apply as per the instructions. There does seem to be a relatively small number of specialist construction agencies advertising the larger number of these vacancies, so it would be worth applying to some of them directly for all their suitable vacancies. I currently am only advertising for specialist engineers within the power/nuclear/gas and oil industry and also within the port environment (Port Development Engineer), so unfortunately I am not handling anything at the moment that would be of use to your graduates. If any of the graduates approach me, I would basically tell them what I have told you and point them in the direction of the JCP website, or give them the Jobseeker Direct contact centre number 0044 (0)845 6060234. This is the JCP contact centre and is staffed by JCP staff Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm and from 9am - 1pm Saturdays. Once the number is dialled, the jobseeker will have a record set up on our systems (name, address, contact number and date of birth), and then if they tell the operator what type of work they are seeking and their preferred location, the operator will search the site and go through the vacancies available. This service is available to anyone and is particularly popular with people without access to the internet or who prefer to speak to a person on a phone. I hope this has answered your questions, but please feel free to contact me again if there is anything else I can help you with, including another visit to your establishment to give a living and working in the UK presentation in the future or anything else that you think I can attend/do.
