Persuasive Writing Introduction Tips

Persuasive Writing Introduction Tips  Mention the issue you plan to support.  Make sure you establish relevance for your issue. o Why is it worth defending? o How does it relate to our society? o What makes it relevant today? o Why should people care about it?  “As citizens of a Democracy who elect our politicians, it is essential for us to understand all major societal issues, including the controversial needle exchange program.”  Thesis statement o Option A—Cite the opposing viewpoint in your thesis statement  “Although some individuals believe that a needle exchange program condones drug use and unfairly uses tax money, it actually benefits all of society by cutting down the spread of HIV, a worldwide epidemic.” o Option B—Do not mention opposing viewpoint in introduction—(you might want to mention it in the essay’s body, for once you demonstrate that you understand opposing views, you will be in a stronger position to present your own point of view).  “A government-sponsored needle exchange program is ineffective and unfair, for it condones illegal drug use, unfairly uses public tax dollars, and doesn’t do anything to solve our nation’s drug problem.” My introduction paragraph: With a faltering economy, an expensive war, a negative world-image and a national health care crisis, the United States of America has reached a crucial point in its history. As we rapidly approach an election year, who we elect as the next President of the United States will undoubtedly determine the direction of our great nation. Although many individuals argue that John McCain, the great American citizen, Senator, and war hero, is the best candidate for our country, it is clear that we need a drastic change. Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama should be elected to serve as our next leader, for his policies will strengthen the economy, end the costly war, improve our image around the world, and solve our health care crisis.
