ONLINE ADVERTISING STATISTICS REPORT SERVICE TO COMMENCE
NetRatings Japan to launch AdRelevance on October 16; estimated total
banner ad spending in Japan was ¥19.2 billion in September 2006
TOKYO — October 16, 2006 — NetRatings Japan Inc., a global leader in Internet media and
market research, today announced the launch of AdRelevance, an online advertising statistics
report service. AdRelevance offers research on Internet media banner ad placement, delivering
statistics covering ad impressions (placement volume), estimated advertising expenditure, ad
placement by advertiser, and ad publication by medium on a nationwide, campaign, and banner-ad
basis. AdRelevance subscribers will be able to keep track of online advertising activity within their
business sector (including themselves and competitors) and nationwide. AdRelevance also provides
numerical data to help decision makers working on the advertising strategies of advertisers and ad
agencies, as well as facilitate scientifically sound marketing by media companies developing
advertising products.
“AdRelevance is the first statistical report service available to Japan’s Internet market that covers
banner ads and includes impressions and estimated advertising expenditure,” said NetRatings
President and Chief Analyst Masashi Hagihara. “Not only does it provide an overview of Japan’s
online advertising market on a monthly basis, but it also tracks all advertising activity by specific
advertisers and specific media. AdRelevance quick reports provide updates on campaigns started
24 hours earlier, offering almost real-time information on competitors’ advertising activity. We
believe AdRelevance will provide marketing information backed by scientific evidence about players
in the online advertising market. Since until now it has been a challenge to compile numerical data
and comprehensive market information, we further believe that AdRelevance will make a huge
contribution to the development of the online advertising market.”
September 2006 AdRelevance data show that 1,254 companies placed Internet banner ads, there
were 3,004 ad campaigns, and 6,453 banner materials were used during the month. Banner ad
impressions reached 29.5 billion and total monthly advertising expenditure was an estimated ¥19.18
billion (see Figure 1).

About AdRelevance online advertising report service
AdRelevance is an online advertising statistical report service that specializes in Internet ads.
Information on online advertisements are automatically compiled from over 3,500 Web pages that
feature advertising in Japan’s 130 major advertising media to calculate banner ad frequency. The
collected data is statistically processed, summarized by medium, business sector, advertiser, and
campaign, and reports produced by advertising material or campaign, with estimates of ad
impressions per advertiser, advertising expenditure, advertising period, and other relevant factors.
NetView page impressions—a respected de facto standard for Internet audience measurement—
are used as a reference for calculating ad impressions. The report deals with ads in GIF and JPEG
formats, as well as flash format banner ads and search engine-linked text ads. Report summaries
Page 3 of 4
can be prepared including or excluding own ads. (Note: totals exclude text banner ads, tie-up ads
including navigation banners to tie-up ads, and specialized banner ads such as expanding and
floating banners).
The main components of AdRelevance are quick reports, which summarize ad placement trends
over the previous two days or a week (new campaigns started and placement of new advertising
materials), monthly reports that summarize monthly ad placement trends, and market reports that
provide an overview of Japan’s online advertising market. Chronological summaries of advertisers’
ad placement trends can be produced on an ad-impressions or estimated advertising-expenditure
basis. The reports also function as an advertising creative collection, since the advertising materials
can be referenced from the report.
