Storage Medium Compact Flash Card – sizes up to 1GB Smart Media Card – sizes up to 256MB - very thin and prone to breakage Memory Stick – sizes up to 256MB – Sony only - expensive CDR – 328MB - purchase additional cards Interface – USB is much faster than serial Batteries – Proprietary – expensive AA – less less expensive NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeables are best Alkalines will not last Buy at least one extra set of batteries Viewfinder – LCD only – almost unusable in bright sunlight Can purchase an LC shade Optical & LCD is best Size Very small cameras are hard to handle Controls should be easy to reach and easy to use. Carrying a camera over 1-1/2lbs can be tiring Neck strap are better than wrist straps Filters If lens has screw threads then buy a “skylight” or “UV” filter Protects lens from dirt, finger prints, and scratches – easier to clean and replace Flash –Almost all digital cameras have a built-in flash Red-eye reduction feature is a valuable extra feature Internal flash rage is only 10-12 feet. A hot shoe bracket or jack for external flash is good extra feature 2-3X flash distance.
