Cayman Clubbing in Ibiza The New Cayman S ... This Car Bites! Letter from the Editor It is hard to imagine that only 10 years ago the only model Porsche on the market was the 911. Of course there was always several different variants of this model ranging from the 911 Carrera to the 911 Turbo but nevertheless, the only Porsche you could buy new was from the 911 series. Since that time, Porsche has introduced the Boxster and the Cayenne both of which have a few different variants of their own. Now, we are trying to restrain our excitement over the arrival of the newest Porsche to join the line-up; the all new Cayman S. This new two-seater coupe was recently launched to the international Porsche dealer network in the Balearic Islands in Spain. Our General Manager, Robert Lee and I were lucky enough to join the 1500 dealers from around the world who were champing at the bit to see and experience this new car. The effort that goes into the organisation of an international launch of this magnitude is difficult to comprehend, but it was certainly not lost on those who attended with Porsche proving once again that its skills go beyond just making the world’s best sports cars. You can read more about both the Cayman S and the launch event later in this edition of Enginuity. Back on home shores, we have been organising some events of our own but thankfully on a slightly smaller scale. Together with jones the grocer, we hosted the second annual International Cheese Festival (‘fromage du monde’), in October. For this year’s festival, we held a special preview night to enable our customers and special guests to get head start on the cheeses before they were presented for judging by the general public at the main event. We are pleased to say that both events were enormously successful and we look forward to doing the same thing all over again next year. In the meantime, we wish you all a wonderful summer and holiday season. Oh and keep a look out for the next big invitation - the launch of the Cayman S. The 911 (997 series) Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S both in coupe and cabriolet versions have arrived at Porsche Centre Sydney South. If you are one of the many followers of these all wheel drive variants of the 911 range, come in and have a look. If you’re not, it won’t take long before you understand what all the fuss is about. The 27 Porsche Sydney South customers in attendance had access to an elite team of Porsche Driving Instructors including Tomas Mezera, Jim Richards, Alex Davison and Scott Jacobs who gave advice on how to get the most from their cars on the track. With a field of cars ranging from 2.7 litre Boxsters to GT3s, some participants took that objective more seriously than others, but everyone had fun all the same. Congratulations to Michael Petterson in his silver 911 (997) for being Top Gun on Day 1 and to Chris King on day 2. Look out for our next Driver Training course (Level 3) which will be held in April/May 2006. The hybrid engine Cayenne In September 2005, Porsche announced its plans to develop a hybrid version of the Cayenne. The hybrid concept chosen by Porsche combines a reduction of fuel consumption and emission free motoring with the performance and driving dynamics typical of Porsche. The car will be powered by both a petrol combustion engine and an electric motor and will deliver a 15% reduction in fuel consumption. Porsche is yet to announce if the car will be available in Australia. Watch this space for more information. 2 Drivers get a briefing from Porsche Driving Instructor, Scott Jacobs at Oran Park. Turbo Charged News The Porsche 911 Turbo charger will feature revolutionary new turbo charge technology when it is released new year. Porsche will present in the new 911, the world’s first turbo-charged petrol engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG). This technology – featured in turbocharged diesels since the ‘90s – ensures significant improvements to engine flexibility and acceleration, particularly at low engine speeds. Until now, much higher exhaust gas temperatures of up to 1000 degrees C in comparison with the turbocharged diesel has proved to be a barrier. Porsche has solved this problem in close co-operation with Borg Warner Turbo Systems by using high temperatureresistant materials from space technology. Turbocharger technology is inextricably linked with Porsche. In October 1974, the German sports car maker launched the world’s first series production sports car with an exhaust gas turbocharger. Ever since, every new generation of the Porsche 911 Turbo has fascinated enthusiasts with a special highlight in technology; from the intercooler to bi-turbo and vario cam plus. All of these have set the benchmark in turbocharger development and the next generation Porsche Turbo 911 VTG seriously raises the stakes again. At Porsche Centre Sydney South, we are used to dealing discretely with high profile customers. We have sold cars to international movie stars, media moguls and accomplished people from many different areas of business. However, when Kostya Tszyu first walked into our Gardeners Road dealership 6 months ago, somehow our collective professional reserve deserted us. It was as if the entire staff had become 15 year olds attending their first rock concerts all over again. Before Kostya could even get a proper look at the different Porsches that had brought him in to see us at PCSS, he graciously posed for numerous mobile phone photos, signed T-shirts and patiently answered dozens of ill-informed questions about boxing. It is difficult to put a finger on what it is about Kostya that brought on this sort of behaviour. As best we can tell, it has something to do with him being that rare combination of out and out sporting superstar and a genuinely likeable and approachable bloke. That probably also explains why he has been so warmly embraced by the Australian public since he moved here from Russia more than 14 years ago. We learned soon after Kostya's initial visit that the press was camped outside his home at the time, seeking some scoop about the wash up of his most recent fight, so as it turned out, Kostya was only too happy to spend a bit of time out and about in the shelter of Porsche Centre Sydney South. After Kostya's new-found automotive groupies ran out of mobile phone memory and had their gushing enquiries answered, he finally got the chance to browse through the range of new Porsches. After Kostya's new-found automotive groupies ran out of mobile phone memory and had their gushing enquiries answered, he finally got the chance to browse through the range of new Porsches. Over the following weeks, Kostya extensively test drove a number of 911 variants and the 4WD Cayenne and ultimately decided to trade in the family Lexus 4 for a new Cayenne S. He was impressed by the Cayenne's unique combination of sports car performance and passenger safety and he was keen to learn more about 4 wheel driving. Both Kostya and his wife Natasha are signed up for PCSS's 4WD Training Program, which is free for all new Cayenne buyers. Kostya now keeps busy with charity work and is involved in a number of youth-related causes such as childhood obesity, literacy and youth depression. He has also been developing a new training program for boxing and fitness instructors which he hopes will add value to the sport he loves. In October 2005, Kostya will launch a book and DVD called ‘Fighting Fit’, which as the name suggests, sets out a boxing-related fitness regime. He recently launched his inspiring biography, ‘From Russia with Gloves’. The photos that accompany this article show how much we enjoyed meeting Kostya and passing on some of our knowledge about Porsche cars. We only hope that the experience of buying a car at PCSS was as enjoyable for he and his family as it was for us. We should also express our thanks to the news crews who unwittingly helped keep Kostya at Porsche Centre Sydney South just that little while longer. This Car Bites! BY AMANDA LINTOTT Not since the Ford Mustang has there ever been a name that so clearly articulates the spirit and performance of a car. When the naming of the newest Porsche was announced we were a little sceptical. Why Cayman and why a name so similar in sound to the Cayenne? However, after driving the car, the reason for the name becomes obvious. In fact, not since the Ford Mustang has there ever been a name that so clearly articulates the spirit and performance of a car. The Cayman S was named after a small but incredibly nimble South American crocodile that is known for its hunting abilities and sharp instincts. Whilst no one here at Porsche Centre Sydney South has ever seen one of these crocodiles, after driving the car we are not sure that we need to. Forgive us for sounding a little un-environmental but we are convinced that the best way for someone to appreciate this animal’s defining characteristics is to simply drive the car. Whilst this new two seater coupe is based on the Boxster platform, it really is a new Porsche altogether. With its DNA drawn from legendary Porsches of the past, this car certainly is instantly recognisable as a classic Porsche sports car, and is sure to create a cult following all of its own. The Cayman S is a two-seater coupe carrying a newly developed and mid-mounted 3.4 litre engine. With its power output of 217kw, peak 6 Technical Data: Cayman S Engine: 3.4 litre, six cylinder Boxster engine 217 kw From 0 to 100 kph in 5.1 seconds 275 kph Power Performance Top Speed torque of 340Nm and a total weight of only 1340kg (just 5kg heavier than a Boxster), the car is incredibly nimble. With a dramatic sloping rear, racy side air inlets and a light filled interior, it is also incredibly beautiful. To think that it could also be practical might be too much. However, the Porsche designers have not disappointed on this front and have carved out an incredible 410 litres of luggage space which is enough to accommodate a standard set of golf clubs – should you ever decide to get out the car. In addition, the Cayman S comes with a series of features and comforts all of which provide a thoroughly unique combination of pure, uncompromised sports car performance, practicality and comfort. As this latest Porsche is introduced to the markets around the world, it is quite clear that it will successfully generate the same degree of excitement and accolade as it’s Porsche predecessors. The Cayman S is priced from $148,500 and will be available for delivery in February 2006. The first shipment of cars has been sold but production is on track to meet the expected demand. The all new Cayman S 7 Concours D’Elegance The Porsche Car Club of NSW held its annual Concours D’Elegance event at Clontarf Reserve on Sunday 23 October. Many of the members displaying vehicles were up long before dawn with chamois in hand to position and prepare their cars for the event. When the sun did eventually come up it revealed a spectacular display of over 100 different Porsches proudly accompanied by dozens of enthusiastic club members together with their friends and families. Porsche Centre Sydney South owner and PCNSW member, Ray Lintott, presented two vehicles at the event including his adorable blue 1958 356A Cabriolet which was very popular with the viewing public and also his rare 1974 Porsche 911 RS 3.O. The PCSS trade stand organised by Parts Manager Nunzio Burelli was well received with plenty of interest in the new range of Porsche accessories. Special thanks to Nunzio and his family, along with Mathew and Ryan for helping out on the day. Congratulations to PCNSW on another fantastic event for all Porsche owners and admirers to enjoy. So just who was the Big Cheese? The second fromage du monde cheese awards proved once again that Sydney-siders are avid lovers of cheese. Over 1,200 cheese enthusiasts headed to Porsche Centre Sydney South on Sunday, 16 October to participate in the world’s largest blind tasting award – meaning the guests sampled the cheeses without knowing their origin or brand. It was a cheese lover’s paradise with over 300 International and Australian varieties presented for judging in 11 different categories. To assist in the arduous task of tasting so many delicious cheeses, a selection of fine De Bortoli wines were offered for guests to sample. For those wishing to know more about the wines, a number of Master Classes were held throughout the day to give guests an understanding of which wines went with particular cheeses and the art of wine tasting. As with 2004 however it was the Australian cheeses that tickled everyone’s fancy with King Island Cloth Wrapped being awarded the Grand Champion Cheese of 2005. Of the 11 categories, 8 were won by Australian cheesemakers which was even a bigger coup than in 2004 when 6 of the 10 categories were taken out by local cheese houses. General Manager of jones the grocer and Fromage du Monde organiser Kelvin Bartholomeuz, said the event exceeded his expectations. “It is a real tribute to the quality and diversity of our cheese industry that they are producing cheeses of such a high standard, in many cases a higher standard than their French competitors,” he said. Apart from the results, Kelvin was surprised by the high level of cheese knowledge and understanding the general public showed in the tasting process. “Just like with wine, many people are developing a broader appreciation of cheese making as an art form.” The entire event was a culmination of considerable work by event partners and co-hosts including jones the grocer, De Bortoli wines, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine and the Blue Mountains International Hospitality and Management School. Over 35 young students from the renowned hospitality school were responsible for presenting the cheeses and serving the wines on the day ensuring the day ran seamlessly. Around the Block with Shane Middledorp “Loves anything rare and fast” What is you role at Porsche Centre Sydney South? Senior Technician How long have you been at PCSS? Four years. I was here when the dealership opened in 2002. Who taught you how to drive? My Mum and Dad taught me to drive although I also had professional driving lessons. What car did you want when you were 13? I always wanted a Holden Torana LJ GTR XUI, ever since my father brought one home back in the 70’s. Caymans attack the island of Ibiza Cayman Clubbing in Ibiza The cars were unveiled with all the drama, anticipation and excitement that every new Porsche deserves How many times did you do your licence test before you passed? Twice, I failed my first go due to exceeding the speed limit. (I thought I was Peter Brock racing his Torana at Bathurst.) What was the first car that you ever owned? My dream car, a Holden Torana/Sunbird 1.9L 4 Cylinder. I had my car for 3 years before I sold it and bought a 1971 Holden Statesman. Did you ever think that you would end up working with cars? Yes, it has always been one of my favourite things in life. I have a great passion for all forms of motorsport and exotic super cars. The new Cayman S was launched in Ibiza, Spain in October 2005. No sooner had summer ended and the infamous euro clubbing crowd had left town, the island was overrun by the slightly more mature but no less enthusiastic Porsche Dealer Network from around the world together with 120 brand new Caymans. Unlike most car manufacturers, Porsche doesn’t launch new models very often. It is perhaps fitting that when there is a new model to be introduced, Porsche does it in style. To get an idea of the scale of the event, imagine 7 different group launches over three days each with 1500 dealer representatives from more than 40 countries. The entire event was staged on board If you were to buy a Porsche, which one would you choose? If money was no object I would choose a Carrera GT, GT2, GT3, Carrera S, Boxster S, 993 C4S, 1973 2.7RS, 3.0RS or a 935. Basically anything that is rare and fast. 12 The Radission Seven Seas Voyager on which the launch was held the Radisson Seven Seas Voyager cruise ship with technical and marketing presentations simultaneously translated, ‘United Nations style’, into languages as diverse as Mandarin, Swedish, Spanish and Russian. The cars were unveiled with all of the drama, anticipation and excitement that every new Porsche deserves, complete with fireworks, Brazilian dancers, waterfall features and 6 brand new red Caymans driving in formation on the Ibiza dock. Without selling short the impact of those things, waking up to the sight of 120 gleaming Caymans in the early morning sun is hard to beat. Our research hasn’t been able to reveal whether the Caiman crocodile, after which the Cayman was named, hunts in packs but that is precisely the way that they took on Ibiza. Day after day, Porsche dealers who were grouped in parties of 10, poked, prodded, revved and just plain enjoyed the Cayman. At times there were so many groups circulating on the island the only traffic to be seen for 5 minutes at a time was Caymans. Exactly what the locals though of this was anyone’s guess. When the last Cayman was loaded on a boat to leave Ibiza that really marked the end of the party season for 2005. General Manager, Robert Lee on the dock in Ibiza Take your pick 13 2005 PCSS Club Sport Update Our Club Sport members are a competitive bunch. Not only do they enjoy every lap and strive to beat their personal best times, they also want to beat every other driver in their class. If that’s not cheeky enough, they also set about to beat drivers in the next class! Ahh, the true spirit of competition is alive and well in our members. You do not have to drive a GT3 to take part and be competitive at track events and many of our members prove this time and time again at various track/club days. We have 911 and Boxster owners keeping the GT3 and Turbo drivers on their toes, striving to be faster than the others. 2005 has been another successful and fun year for Club Sport with nearly all our members achieving personal best times during the season. This continually raises the bar in each class and sets a new benchmark for others to aim toward. A few of our members have now taken up racing in national categories such us Production Sports Car Racing and The Australian Porsche Drivers Challenge/ 14 Australian GT Championship and are doing very well. Congratulations guys! Recently the Porsche Car Club of NSW and the BMW Club of NSW held their annual challenge and again, PCSS Club Sport members were chosen to represent the Porsche Team. Proudly distributed by www.angoves.com.au ANG1572 Determination Pays for PCSS Customer For as far back as Marwan Kojok can remember, he had two great goals in life – to practice law and to own an iconic Porsche 911. It was no co-incidence that years ago he reserved the personalised registration plates of “LAW 911” at the RTA. Now an intuitive 30 year old, Marwan is a director of a legal practice, Baybridge Lawyers, which is a CBD based law firm specialising in the growing area of franchise law. Having achieved his first goal, Marwan embarked on the execution of goal number two. Unfortunately this didn’t come without a hitch. Marwan purchased his first 911, a manual coupe in March 2005. However the events that followed only minutes after taking delivery made him reconsider whether the realisation of this goal was meant to be. While driving home that night, a obscure combination of poor light and a sudden downpour of rain, rendered a sharp corner invisible. An adverse collision with a street pole resulted in the car being written off. Luckily both occupants of the Porsche walked away, a testimony, no doubt, to driver reflexes and the inherent safety features of the Porsche. Not being the type of person to let his aspirations subside, Marwan was as determined as ever to own his Porsche 911, however, this time his approach would be a little more calculated. In order to learn as much as possible about the car he had longed to own, he undertook a two-day course at the Porsche Mt Cotton Driver Training Centre, in Queensland. That gave him the opportunity to try the entire range of Porsches, ranging from the 2.7 litre Boxster to the 911 Turbo, on different road surfaces and conditions in order to familiarise himself with the models that he was most interested in. It is a testament to Marwan’s persistence and the enduring appeal of the Porsche 911, that he returned to Sydney as determined as ever that the 911 was the car for him. His motto “Always look to the future as it holds more than the past. Always look to the past as it will improve the future”. Six months later, Marwan has just taken delivery of his second 911, this time with a tiptronic transmission, which he considered to be more suitable for driving to and from his legal practice in the Sydney CBD. In hindsight, Marwan is glad he invested in the Mt Cotton course. “It opened my eyes to the performance potential of these cars and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing a Porsche or even just someone who wants to experience what it is like to drive the full range of Porsches; from the super agile and fun Boxster to the awesome 911 Turbo.” Marwan Kojok never gave up on his dream to own a Porsche 911 16 Take your Porsche climbing! These rare and very valuable Porsches include the Type 718 RS 60 Spyder that won the 1960 Targa Florio road race, an eight cylinder version of the same car nicknamed ‘Grandmother’ because of its long racing life, a 904 coupe powered by a similar 2.0 litre flat eight cylinder engine, a beautiful 356 Carrera Abarth and a Porsche Type 718/2 Formula II open wheeler in which Stirling Moss won three Grands Prix in 1960. How to tell when your clutch needs attention Imagine trying to push a loaded wheelbarrow up a hill wearing shoes with no grip. In a manual vehicle, the clutch transfers the drive from the engine to the gearbox. If it has started to wear down, your car is unlikely to be performing the way that it should and could eventually breakdown. Here are some tell tale signs of a clutch that is in need of attention. flywheel, has worn beyond allowable tolerances. Clutch slippage can also occur when clutch surfaces are glazed causing the clutch not to bite. A worn clutch pressure plate can result in clutch slippage due to lack of clamp down pressure being applied to clutch components. Clutch Shudder Not to be confused with a kangaroo hop which is a problem with technique rather than mechanics, clutch shudder is a vibration through the drive train when the clutch is being engaged. Shuddering is caused when there is misalignment within the clutch assembly, or possibly the dual mass flywheel is not dampening the transfer load on engagement. Clutch pedal take-up too high If it feels as though your knee is in your stomach before your clutch has started to engage, your clutch is probably worn out. If left alone this can become a serious problem due to lack of clutch pedal free-play which is a gap of no contact between the release bearing and the pressure plate. When all free-play has been taken up, the release bearing is constantly riding and will eventually burn out. Noisy Clutch A noisy clutch can be extremely serious. Noise can derive from an excessively worn release bearing to a defective clutch pressure plate. It generally occurs when the clutch is disengaged, however, urgent attention is highly recommended in any scenario. Clutch Slippage Clutch slippage is generally experienced when the engine speed increases without change in vehicle speed. In other words, your engine is revving but you’re not going anywhere.
