New Types of Lithium Ion Batteries Bruno Scrosati Dipartimento di Chimica, University La Sapienza, 00185 Rome, Italy Among advanced electrochemical storage systems, lithium-ion batteries are the power sources of choice due to their high specific energy density, high efficiency and long life time. Indeed, these batteries are today produced by billions of units per year for the consumer electronics market. However, scaling up lithium ion technology for Renewable Energy Plants (REPs) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) is problematic because of limits in safety, costs, power density and materials availability. Revolutionary changes in the battery chemistry and configurations are needed to solve the issues that still prevent the use of lithium ion batteries in these crucial markets. We report here the progresses achieved in our laboratory to achieve this goal. New lithium ion batteries, using new types of electrode and electrolyte materials, will be reported and discussed.
