Job Description for Watershed Coordinator Watershed Management Planning Process Greater Lafayette Reach of the Wabash River The watershed coordinator will be responsible for developing a watershed management plan for the Lafayette-West Lafayette reach of the Wabash River in a manner that is inclusive of all stakeholders. The coordinator will work closely with government agencies, non-profits, and individual citizens in the community to develop the plan. The coordinator will organize and facilitate steering committee meetings, arrange logistics for public meetings, prepare draft plan documents, coordinate volunteers, and collect water samples as necessary. Specific duties are discussed below. Major Duties Watershed Planning. Provide leadership in developing a watershed management plan through the collection and analysis of land use and resource information, identification and clarification of stakeholder concerns, establishment of goals, and supporting locally initiated strategies. The plan must conform to IDEM’s 2003 checklist and EPA’s nine elements. Provide leadership in community outreach efforts related to watershed planning. This includes developing and disseminating outreach materials to stakeholders at venues such as county fairs and networking among agencies, organizations and individuals. The coordinator will be responsible for maintaining a project website and preparing press releases. Assist with water quality monitoring. The coordinator will oversee volunteers, help collect water samples to be analyzed by Purdue, and ensure all appropriate QAPPs (Quality Assurance Project Plans) are filed with IDEM. Coordinate Steering Committee activities. Provide technical support to the steering committee. Assist in preparing meeting agenda and coordinating activities to implement project. Provide leadership to develop strong working relationships among steering committee members, stakeholders, and other federal, state, local government. The Coordinator will also assist subcommittees as necessary. Oversee 319 Grant. Keep track of cost share information. Maintain financial records necessary to manage grant. Keep project on time and on budget. Write quarterly and final reports to IDEM. Required Qualifications • MS degree in environmental sciences, water resources, planning, or a related natural resource management field (or BS plus three years experience) • Ability to effectively coordinate and manage a complex multi-organizational project • Training and/or experience in organizational development, communications, consensus building, facilitation, and leadership skills • Excellent writing, presentation, and public relations skills • Working knowledge of watershed issues, non-point source pollution remediation strategies, and watershed management • Ability to work independently, establish work priorities, and manage time effectively. • Proficiency in the use of MS Word and Excel, and ability to learn new computer applications. • Understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) and their use in watershed planning • Ability to maintain a website • Valid drivers license and reliable personal transportation • Ability to work effectively with individuals, groups, and units of government • Familiarity with Lafayette/West Lafayette community Salary and Position Details The Coordinator will report to Stan Lambert, Executive Director of the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation (WREC) and the steering committee for the planning process. The position pays between $35,000 and $40,000 per year commensurate with experience. Note that the position does not include benefits. The position is currently funded for over two years and more funding will be sought to continue the position. A completion bonus will be paid at the end of the initial nine quarters. This is a full time position and the Coordinator will be housed at WREC’s office in the Depot in Lafayette. The position will entail some weekend and evening work commitments. The Coordinator will be able to attend the Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy and other training opportunities.
