ground zero.
4. How do I get started?
For new students, activation of student email and LAN accounts are now processed via MIDAS. You will
need to activate your MIDAS account and create your security profile. You can request for a new account
from the link below:
http://occs.odu.edu/accounts/studemail/
For students who had previous email accounts on Lotus Notes, all eligible student email accounts
were activated for ODU Gmail on December 15th, 2008. As of December 18th, 2008, 38,057 accounts
have been activated. If you have not yet logged into your ODU Gmail account and verified it, here is how
you do it:
Agree to the Gmail terms
1. Continue to Gmail to agree to the Google terms
2. You will be directed to a "Shibboleth" Login page, enter you MIDAS ID and Password and click login
3. Enter the word verification.
4. Agree and finalize your account (you should see the gmail interface, if you get placed back at the
same verification screen, you probably typed the word verification incorrectly, try again.)
5. Logout of Gmail and close the window.
Once Activated you can access your email by logging into http://my.odu.edu. Please remember that all
new mail will now be delivered to your gmail account just created, but older mail will remain in Notes
(season.odu.edu). The portal, my.odu.edu, will display a login button for both systems. For help with access
or account creation, please contact the Help Desk at 757 6833192. For assistance with gmail, please visit
http://google.com/support/a/users/?hl=en
5. How are the Google services linked together?
You have one username for all services in the Google Apps package. Once you log in to one service, you
can easily access all others.
Rely on the Start Page to provide access to the rest of the services. The Start Page is publicly available, but
won't display personalized content until you log in. You can see a recent snapshot of new mail, calendar
events and updated documents.
Within your email account, you can chat with your contacts. You'll receive invitations for calendar events
and to collaborate on documents and spreadsheets.
6. What do I need to know about Google Docs & Spreadsheets?
It's a webbased word processing and spreadsheet application. It can help us collaborate on projects from
anywhere. Your documents are stored online. You and anyone whom you invite to collaborate can access
the document from any Internetconnected computer and make changes simultaneously. Multiple people
can make changes at once and everyone's changes show in real time.
You can get started right away by creating a new document or by uploading a file from your computer. Since
the products are integrated, you can use your email account Contacts list to invite people to view or edit
your documents.
More Tips
Revision history Individual edits are kept so you can see who made changes and revert back, if necessary.
Search Just like the rest of Google products, you can harness the power of Google search to look for a
document that you have not edited in months.
Security and privacy You choose who sees your document. Other users can only access your document
or spreadsheet if you add them to the list of collaborators or viewers or if you decide to publish the
document.
7. What is the difference between Google Chat and Google Talk??
Google Chat is integrated in your Gmail interface and allows you to chat with other gmail users on your
contact list without reauthentication.
Google Talk requires a separate Google account and a light client (Google Talk client) to be installed.
Your MIDAS password credentials are not passed and you will be prompted to log in again on
Google's site using your other Google account. Google Talk offers free voice calls, voicemail for when
your contacts are offline and file transfers while chatting. Also, PCtoPC voice calls (VoIP) are practical
and offer great quality. The person on the other end can be anywhere in the world as long as he or she is
connected to the Google Talk network.
Google Talk client can be downloaded at:
http://dl.google.com/googletalk/googletalksetup.exe
8. Google Apps support is limited:
* Google apps is hosted and supported by Google. Very limited support is available through OCCS.
* All data will be stored by Google and OCCS will be unable to access and/or restore deleted data.
* Google Apps will not be able to access ODU resources such as address book lookup, meeting rooms, and
calendaring resources available only by using Exchange.
9. Can I access my Google email through my wireless device (ie. Palm, Blackberry, iPhone, Windows
Mobile device, etc)??
*Google Mobile Client will not work since authentication occurs on ODU's domain, not Google.
* POP/IMAP Services are not available since authentication occurs on ODU's domain, not Google.
*You can access your student Gmail account using your mobile device's web browser:
