Use this for more realistic operation when using block control. Brake on DC
If you set your blocks so that no current is present in a blocked out section,
anything entering the block will stop abruptly and go dark. The better your decoder operates on DC ( see the graph
above ), the more realistic the hold will look.
If you set your blocks so that 12 volt DC is present in a blocked out section,
anything entering the block will stop at the rate of deceleration you have To use this feature, do the following:

FEATURES ON ALL TCS DECODERS Page 3
We have always been ahead of the industry by providing
decoder features that make model railroading more enjoyable.
Phone: 215-453-9145 Web: www.tcsdcc.com We do this by creating features that make operation
prototypical. And we do it as well as it can be done – not just
                                            good enough to sell.

 Features available on all decoders:
 • Quiet Drive creates SUPER QUIET engine performance. Engine manufacturers have tested our decoders for
quietness and found them superior. Our system is so good we haven’t changed it for more than 5 years.
 • Autodetect for realistic throttle response when using DC power. Modelers don’t just run their equipment on
their layout and some use DC blocks so that an engine isn’t “dead” when stopped. Our decoders loose about
one half volt before responding. Our competitors loose between two and six volts.
 • Dimmed Brightness of bulbs or LEDs is adjustable. LEDs need to be cut way down to be prototypical.
 • Dither is the ultimate in DCC control thru the entire speed range. A magazine evaluator said “ the engine
moves so slowly that you can count the ties as it runs.” That has been true for more than 5 years.
 • Variable Momentum lets you make custom acceleration curves. To minimize wear and tear, because of
brake fade and torque limitations, trains don’t accelerate and decelerate at constant rates. With TCS decoders,
       you can duplicate the prototype.
 • Factory Reset is faster and easier to reset to the default settings.
 • Brake on DC stops the train with deceleration when in a DC block, maintains lighting, then accelerates when
       DCC returns.
 • Momentary Pulse: to uncouple, activate a sound module, or other function.
  • Mars, Gyra, Rotary Beacon, Blinking Ditch Lights and Momentary Pulse are adjustable.
  • Decoder Lock for programming same address decoders independently.
  • Function Remapping: 13 buttons for most lights, 7 buttons for operations.
 • OPS Mode Programming allows on the main track programming.
 • All Program Modes are supported allowing use with any controller.
 • Basic and Advanced Consisting for use with any controller.
 • Standard 2 Digit or Extended 4 Digit Addressing.
 • User Loadable Speed Tables for custom speed curves.
 • 14 or 28 / 128 Speed Step Control operating at 256 speed steps.
 • Other lighting features include Random Flicker, Single & Double Strobe, and Constant Dim light.

Features available on some decoders:
 • 1.5 Volt Regulator on board for 1.5 Volt Light Bulbs 120mA maximum.
 • Button Control of the Motor Circuit: for a smoke unit, high speed switching, or a variable brightness
       light up to 1.2 amps

Ordering Options:
   • Ordering a custom harness with the decoder: Add a dash and the desired harness number to the number of
the desired decoder. Example: T1-P2K or MC2-P2K.
   • Ordering a custom harness separately: Order the desired harness number. Example: P2K. If you want a
Mini ( 7 pin ) harness, add a “MC“ as a prefix to the desired harness number. Example: MCP2K.
   • Ordering a hardwired decoder with a custom plug: Add a “P-“ and the desired harness number to the
number of the desired decoder. Example: M3P-MH.
   • Ordering a standard harness separately: The harness number for a standard harness with 7.5” wires is WH.
If you want a Mini ( 7 pin ) harness, add a “MC-“ as a prefix to the standard harness number. Example: MC-WH.

Note:
If you plug the harness into the socket the wrong way, no damage will occur. The engine will run in the
opposite direction and only a bulb operated by the green pin will work.

Bachman Steam engines ( possibly others ) with capacitors

There is a capacitor across the motor circuit that drastically modifies the speed curve when using a Quiet
Drive decoder. It causes an over-speed problem. It must be removed from the circuit. Do this by simply
cutting one lead of the capacitor and bending it out of the way. The capacitor is typically yellow and has a
marking of 105.

   • Photo 1 shows the circuit board in the tender of a 3-truck Shay steam engine. The capacitor is cut
on one side. The view is from fireman's side.
   • Photo 2 shows the circuit board in the tender of a 2-8-0 Consolidation Steam Engine. The
capacitor is cut on one side and moved out of the way.

Technical explanation
The capacitors are placed in the circuit by Bachman, for the purpose of reducing the possibility that electrical
noise generated by the motor when running would interfere with a TV or radio or cell phone or possibly some
other electronic device. All TCS decoders have a capacitor built into the decoder and therefore external
capacitors are not needed. The TCS decoder is tuned to work with it’s own internal capacitor in operation. With
external capacitors applied in the circuit the result is a detuning which results in poor speed control. That is why
the Bachman applied capacitors need to be removed. The internal decoder capacitor reduces the possibility of
electrical interference so there is no harm in removing the external capacitors.
