THE SHELDON CELEBRATES THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI SCHOOL
OF JOURNALISM WITH “PICTURES OF THE YEAR” CONCERT AND EXHIBIT
ST. LOUIS, MO - The Sheldon presents University City Symphony Orchestra “Pictures of the Year” exhibit opening
concert, Friday, October 3, 2008 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. The concert celebrates the
100th anniversary of the founding of the University of Missouri School of Journalism with Ravel’s’ Ma Mere L’Oye composed
in 1908, “The Typewriter” by Leroy Anderson who was born in 1908, and Sheldon Executive Director Paul Reuter’s Telling
the Story: Fair and True commissioned by the School of Journalism to mark the anniversary. The piece will incorporate
photographs from the University’s Pictures of the Year International archives, a selection of which is currently on view in the
Sheldon Art Galleries.
The University City Symphony Orchestra (UCSO) is a non-profit community orchestra established in 1960, giving amateur
musicians in the St. Louis area the opportunity to play orchestral literature. Though drawing on musicians from throughout
the surrounding area, it rehearses and holds the majority of its free concerts in University City, Missouri. Currently under the
direction of Dr. Leon Burke III, the orchestra sponsors the William Schatzkamer Young Artists Competition, partners with
other area musical organizations and plays throughout the St. Louis area and surrounding counties.
Dr. Leon Burke, III began his musical studies at the age of 12. By age 16, Burke began conducting orchestra, and after
graduating from John Burroughs School, he entered the Oberlin Conservatory in 1972. Upon graduating with a B.M. in
Composition, he entered the University of Kansas, where he earned an M.M. and a D.M.A. in Conducting. He has been a
Fulbright Fellow in Paraguay, and is currently active as the Conductor of the University City Symphony Orchestra and
Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. He is the Choir Director at Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Kirkwood
and outside of St. Louis, Dr. Burke is the Conductor for the Metropolitan Ballet of Topeka and Metro East Junior Orchestra
in Belleville. He also is an adjunct faculty member at East Central College in Union, Missouri.
Paul Reuter is a graduate of the University of Missouri–Columbia School of Music, with a B.S. in Vocal Music Education
and an M.A. in Music Composition, studying with Dr. Thomas McKenney. He later studied with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
in England. Reuter has written compositions performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, several other American
orchestras, the Fires of London, and heard on National Public Radio, American Public Radio and the BBC. Reuter served as
Music Director of KBIA-FM in Columbia before moving to Connecticut for 16 years where he was the Executive Director of
the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the Executive Director of the Sheldon Arts Foundation.
