Sunday WORSHIP Service “ Just Say YES and NO ! ”
DEFINITIONS “ Just Say YES and NO ! ”

OATH - A solemn statement or claim used to validate a promise (Promise - A
solemn pledge to perform or grant a specified thing).

Oaths were accompanied by protective curses to make sure the oaths were
kept (1 Sam 14:24; Gen 24:41).

Used to seal treaties, insuring that neither party broke their promise (Gen 26:28).

Oaths were sometimes taken lightly, as if all parties expected them to be
broken (Hos 10:4).

Oaths were taken very seriously (Ex 20:7; Lev 19:12).

Lying about an oath could result in death (Ezek 17:16-18).

In a nutshell oaths were intended to cause us to be firm in our commitments,
causing our Yes to be Yes and our No to be No. For truth to abound, that we
would not be tossed to and fro.
Matthew 5:33-37 NIV “ Just Say YES and NO ! ”

33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long
ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have
   made to the Lord.'
34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is
   God's throne;
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is
the city of the Great King.
36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even
   one hair white or black.
37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything
beyond this comes from the evil one.
Matthew 5:33-32 THE MESSAGE “ Just Say YES and NO ! ”

33-37 "And don't say anything you don't mean. This counsel is
embedded deep in our traditions. You only make things worse
when you lay down a smoke screen of pious talk, saying, 'I'll
pray for you,' and never doing it, or saying, 'God be with you,'
and not meaning it. You don't make your words true by
embellishing them with religious lace. In making your speech
sound more religious, it becomes less true. Just say 'yes' and
'no.' When you manipulate words to get your own way, you go
wrong. The Message

INTERPRETATION “ Just Say YES and NO ! ”

We are a people who lack commitment. Break oaths/promises. We live in a
people-pleasing world. We shouldn‟t need to make oaths or promises or
swear to anything. Our word should be enough.

Sadly, because we don‟t want to offend, or be committed, or because we
want to keep up appearances we become wishy-washy, we say what we
think others want to hear or what we think will make us look good.

1. I will pray for you and then forget to do it?
2. We must get together soon, but soon never comes?
3. Let‟s get our children together for a play date, I‟ll call you to set it up! The
   call never comes.

We give the impression that we care, when in our heart we only care about
ourselves.

Jesus knew the importance of saying „NO‟. There were
times when He said no to the demands and requests made
of Him, times when He said NO to the crowd and got away
to be alone with his disciples; times when he left the
disciples to be alone with the Father. He looked to God for
guidance and direction. He listened to that still small voice
calling to Him above all others. That meant sometimes not
getting to those dear to Him, His cousin John in prison
before Herod took off his head, with Mary and Martha when
       Lazarus was ill and dying.

God does not want us to be lukewarm, but to be firm; not
straddling the fence unable to make a decision: to be firm in our
commitment once the decision is made. There is no middle
ground! Too often we rush in to making a decision and then
realize that it was the wrong choice, but rather than rectifying it
we default on it.
