                                                          (Raychem Wintergard)

Purpose:

The Raychem Wintergard advanced frost protection system for pipes shall be installed to prevent damage to
exposed, insulated pipe-work. The system should be installed in the most energy efficient way possible.

Specification:

The Product shall be supplied and delivered by:

All heat-tracing cables shall be of the energy efficient self-regulating type as manufactured by Tyco Thermal
Controls and known as Raychem Wintergard Frost Protection for pipes (FS-A-2X, FS-B-2X, FS-C-2X).

The Wintergard cables shall be capable of demonstrating a lifetime in excess of 20 years.

The heating cables shall have modified polyolefin or fluoropolymer electrical insulation, tinned copper braid and
modified polyolefin over jacket. The self-regulating index shall be at least 0.25.

The services to be protected shall include:

 a) Chilled water flow and return mains - maximum pipe contents temperature 10°C.

 b) Hose reel water - maximum pipe contents temperature 10°C.

 c) LPHW heating flow and return mains - maximum pipe contents temperature 82°C.

 d) Domestic cold water supply pipework including cold feeds, down service and open
vents etc. Maximum pipe contents temperature 10°C.

All cold water, chilled water, fire protection services etc, shall be freeze protected with FS-A-2X and installed to a
maximum circuit length of 150 m.

All LPHW services shall be protected with FS-C-2X and installed to a maximum circuit length of 90 m.

The termination of the self-regulating heating cables shall be made using components as approved by the cable
manufacturer. For FS-A-2X and FS-B-2X, the connection shall be an insulation displacement type and gel type
seals, manufactured by Tyco Thermal Controls, known as RayClic. The connector shall be UV resistant, with a
protection rating of IP 68, able to withstand temperatures up to 65C, have an audible/visual installation control to
                                                                                                                         CDE-0313 R4
check the installation and gel type end seals, with no heat shrinkable components in use. The connection system
shall be quick and easy to install.

For FS-C-2X, terminations and connections shall be made using heat shrinkable components and junction boxes
as manufactured by Tyco Thermal Controls and detailed in the Technical Handbook.

The Wintergard systems shall be straight traced and generally installed, tested and commissioned strictly in
accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and preferably by a specialist installer named by them.
All heat-tracing circuits shall be controlled via an air sensing thermostat except those circuits where indicated by
a line sensing thermostat e.g. potable water services, chilled water etc.

The air sensing thermostat shall have a proportional ambient sensing control function that automatically adjusts
the heating cable output proportional to the changes in the ambient temperature, thereby lowering the energy
consumption of the system, Known as the DigiTrace Raystat-Eco-10 as manufactured by Tyco Thermal Controls.

In addition the controller shall have the following functions;
        - Digital display
        - Programming capability with the supply switched off
        - 25 amp switching rating
        - Sensor failure alarm
        - Voltage failure alarm
        - Selectable fail safe mode, either ON or OFF
        - Alarm relay for remote BMS monitoring

All pipework with electrical heat-tracing shall be provided with suitable warning signs, visible from all sections.
Signs on pipelines shall not be more than 5 m apart and should be placed on alternate sides of the pipe.

Each heat-tracing circuit shall be protected electrically by a MCB to BS EN 60898 type C or D or equivalent.
Additionally a residual current device of 30 mA sensitivity that trips within 100ms should be used. These shall
form an integral part of the motor control panel or local distribution board.

Wiring between the heat-tracing circuits, terminal units, the thermostat(s), the contactor and the distribution board
shall be done by an electrical contractor.

Isolators for each circuit shall be provided.

The heat tracing system shall be a complete system as supplied by the manufacturer and shall have a
product warranty of 5 years

                                                                                                                        CDE-0313 R4

In Engineering Notes column:

All exposed pipework to be heat-traced with Raychem Wintergard Frost Protection for pipes,
as manufactured by Tyco Thermal Controls (FS-A-2X, FS-B-2X, and FS-C-2X).

Type to be selected according to maximum temperature of pipe contents.

To be installed within maximum circuit length for type selected.

Circuits to be controlled by air sensing/pipe sensing thermostats as indicated and switched
 via a contactor.

The termination of self-regulating heating cables shall be made using components as
 approved by the cable manufacturer.

Each circuit to be protected by MCB/RCD, sized in accordance with the Tyco Thermal
 Controls design guide.

                                                                                               CDE-0313 R4
