The changing face of dentistry
Dentistry has undergone some dramatic changes in the last 30 years.
Dental care needs have changed as our oral health has improved,
with dentists seeing fewer cases of tooth decay and dental disease in
many parts of the UK. However, a modern diet of refined, sugary
foods and acidic drinks should warn us all against complacency.

T here have also been significant changes to
the way in which patients access dental
care services. In the 1970’s, nearly all treat-

What is acid erosion?
Acid erosion occurs when we con-
sume food and drinks that contain
acid. The acid comes into contact
with teeth, at which point the
tooth’s hard enamel surface tem-
porarily softens. When we then
brush our teeth, the enamel can be
worn away more easily and become
thinner over time. This wearing of
enamel, caused by acid in our diet,
is known as acid erosion. Top nutritionist Anita Bean
