Examination Registration for Actuarial Exemptions Advice for Students 29 September 2008 1. Registration is Necessary: Students must register with the Faculty of Science & Health Office if they wish to sit a module examination for exemption purposes. If a student is required to take examinations as part of their programme, and also wishes to take examinations for exemption purposes in a given diet, they must register with both the Registry and the Faculty Office. 2. Who is Eligible to Register? (a) Students who are registered to sit an actuarial module examination for the first time as part of their programme during the Semester 1 and Semester 2 examination diets. (b) Students who have been absent with good cause from an actuarial module examination which is part of their programme and, for which, they were also registered for exemption purposes. (c) Students who have passed the actuarial module overall (at the first attempt)1 for University purposes but who have not been recommended for exemption in the associated CT subject and, for whom, this is the second and final registration for this CT exemption subject. This opportunity of a second chance is not available during the Semester 1 and 2 examination diets. 3. Registration Period: Registration must be undertaken during teaching weeks 11 and 12 of Semesters 1 and 2 or during the final 2 weeks of July (for the Autumn examination diet). 4. Registration Process: A separate registration form must be used for each examination diet and is available on the School web-page2 . Registering students must return a completed signed hardcopy of the relevant form (and, if necessary, the appropriate registration fee — see paragraph 5 below) before the end of the relevant registration period and addressed to: Ms Grace Hickey, Faculty of Science & Health, Room HG01, School of Nursing Building, Dublin City University, Dublin 9. 5. Registration Fee: (a) Students described in paragraphs 2 (a) and 2 (b) do not have to pay a fee to the Faculty Office. (b) Students described in paragraph 2 (c) have to pay a registration fee to the Faculty Office. The fee per actuarial subject will be that of the University’s repeat examination fee which is in force at the time of the repeat exemption registration. Payment should be in the form of a cheque made payable (for the full amount) to Dublin City University. By an overall pass in the actuarial module in this context is meant the award of an overall module score of 40% or above in the first examination sitting for this module. 2 Registration forms are available at http://www.dcu.ie/maths/actuarial/forms.shtml. For example, the registration form for Autumn Examinations is located at http://www.dcu.ie/maths/actuarial/autumn exemptions.pdf. 1 1 6. Which Exemption Subjects can be Registered? The three registration forms (for Semester 1, Semester 2 and Autumn diets of examinations) list the eligible exemption subjects (and contributing DCU modules) for that particular diet. 7. Timetable for Autumn Actuarial Exemption Examinations: Every effort will be made to accommodate second attempts at exemption examinations in the Autumn Examination diet. However, there is no guarantee that students, even if they have registered with the Faculty Office, will be able to sit all, or even any, of the module examinations they wish. Students will be fully reimbursed for registration fees paid for exemption module examinations which were not scheduled by the Registry’s examination timetable. [Note: The priority in timetabling is to allow students to take those examinations which are in fulfillment of their degree programme requirements. An examination may not be timetabled if no student is taking it as part of their degree programme. Also, it may be scheduled at the same time as another examination which the student may wish to take for the purposes of gaining an exemption, or be required to take in order to progress.] 8. The Registry & Autumn Actuarial Exemption Examinations: Please note also that registration for repeat actuarial module examinations is separate from registrations for repeat examinations for the University, which are handled by the Registry. Therefore, students are asked not to contact the Registry in relation to a module which they have passed. The Registry only handles repeat examinations for students who have failed or deferred examinations in earlier diets. 9. Results of Actuarial Module Examinations: Exemption levels vary across actuarial subjects but they usually lie in the range 60% to 65%. Following the relevant Examiners’ Meetings, the University will write to the Education Officers of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, listing the specific exemption recommendations for each student. Students will also receive a letter from the University confirming the exemptions for which they have been recommended. 10. Claiming your Exemptions after Graduation: In order to claim your exemptions (only after graduation from DCU), you must become a student member or an affiliate of either the Faculty of Actuaries or the Institute of Actuaries. You must then submit the “Application for Exemptions” form. The Profession will match your application with the information provided by the University and then confirm your exemptions. Further information can be found on the web-page: www.actuaries.org.uk/students/getting started/exemptions. 11. Terms & Conditions: All matters on these pages are governed by the terms and conditions stipulated in the document “Terms & Conditions for Students Sitting Examinations for Actuarial Exemptions”3 Students are requested to read this document carefully as they will be required to indicate their acceptance of these terms and conditions at the time of registration. 3 The document “Terms & Conditions for Students Sitting Examinations for Actuarial Exemptions” can be found at http://www.dcu.ie/maths/actuarial/terms and conditions oct2008.pdf. 2
