Tips for Recording Audio

Do:
Start recording as close to the beginning of the actual lecture as possible. The Maycom has a built in omni-directional microphone on the top of the unit. It will capture sound from all around, but should be pointed in the direction of the main speaker. Include general information (lecturer, course, date, topic) at the start of the recording: “Good morning, I’m ___________ This is English 1A, Today is Week 1, Monday 26th of July, This session will cover ________” Let the students in the lecture know it’s being recorded: “This lecture is being recorded and will be made available through MyUni so I may say some things to make the recording easier to use” Stop recording as soon as the lecture has finished. Indicate the end of the lecture clearly by saying something like: “That’s it for today” or “This is the end of today’s lecture for English 1A …” Indicate visual material is being used and perhaps describe any relevant visual or physical activity for listeners. Repeat comments and questions from the audience. If you move around a lot, try to position the Maycom unit somewhere equally distant from your path. Using a lapel microphone will help students and the Maycom unit capture what you say. Review the recording in MyUni before making it available to students.
Don’t:
Cover the Maycom unit or keep in a bag/container while you are recording. Position the Maycom unit close to a computer, projector or other electrical item that hums or has a fan. Position the Maycom unit on a bench, table or surface that will be knocked, tapped or rustled.
