Tips for Writing Dialogue 1. Use “quotation marks” and identify each speaker. 2. Always capitalize the first word of a quotation. 3. Use a comma to separate a quotation from the words that tell who is speaking. 4. If a quotation comes first in a sentence, put a comma (or questions mark or exclamation point) inside the last quotation marks. 5. Dialogue should have a natural rhythm. 6. Write your dialogue the way people talk. 7. Anytime someone NEW is talking, indent and start a new paragraph. 8. Try using a rich word for the word “said” occasionally.
