In the past, many an auction requir
ed the buyer to send to the seller
a personal check. Once this was rec
eived – two to three days – the sel
ler would deposit it and wait for t
he funds to clear, which for out of
 state checks usually took about fi
ve to 10 business days. After the t
ransfer of the funds was verified,
the seller would then send out the
item. Of course, if the seller was
a fraud, there was precious little
the buyer could do since the transa
ction had already gone through the
account. Certified checks were a bi
t faster, but once again they requi
red the buyer to have extraordinary
 faith in the seller, and also nece
ssitated a trip to the grocery stor
e or bank to purchase such a check.

When PayPal entered the scene these
 two forms of payment became virtua
lly obsolete. Granted, some sellers
 still offer their buyers the abili
ty to purchase with a personal or c
ertified check, but the majority of
 buyers do not want to bother with
these kinds of payment any more. In
 addition to the foregoing, since P
ayPal permits payment processing ev
en with the help of credit cards, e
veryone wins!

In today’s eBay market place, for e
xample, there are a variety of stor
es that compete for business and as
 such they are set up to take credi
t card payments, but the average th
e seller does not have an account s
et up with MasterCard or Visa, and
PayPal comes to the rescue by permi
tting the seller to accept the buye
r’s credit cards simply via its pay
ment processing service.

A lot of criticism has been made ag
ainst the company, in part because
so many hackers have tried their ha
nds at cracking the codes. Some SPA
M messages look remarkably realisti
c and therefore have caused unsuspe
cting customers to reveal passwords
 and other identifiable information
 that has granted third parties acc
ess to their accounts, but by and l
arge this is a rare occurrence. Pay
Pal goes to great length to ensure
that clients are aware of the safet
y precautions taken by the company
to prevent these kinds of problems.
 Similarly, there were some lawsuit
s brought against PayPal’s business
 practices with respect to business
 dispute resolution procedures. At
this point in time the problems hav

once again the question whether usi

wered with a resounding “yes”!
