                  POLICY ON EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
RATIONALE :

By law, Somerville Intermediate School is required to have an established emergency
procedure of which all staff and students are aware.

                           Civil Defence Act, 1983 Sections 43-45.
                           Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 1992.

Related Policy:            M19 Health & Safety

PURPOSES:

1.   To comply with local body and other safety and health regulations.

2.   To ensure the safety of the students, staff and school facility before, during and after
     an emergency

3.   To provide educational instruction to ensure that staff and students are aware of and
     are properly trained, to follow the emergency procedures.

GUIDELINES:

1.   Programmes of study based on emergency procedures will be included where
     applicable.

2.   Each term there will be at least one emergency drill at a time chosen at random by the
     Principal. All drills will be evaluated to improve their effectiveness.

3.   All emergency evacuations will be reported to the Board of Trustees.

4.   All staff will be aware of the location of hoses, bells, and exit routes from school
     buildings and assembly points.

5.   A map of exit routes and programmes will be displayed in all classrooms and other
     rooms.

6.   In the event of a civil defence emergency, instructions broadcast by the Civil Defence
     Controller will be followed.

7.   In case of other community emergencies which could impinge on student safety, the
     school will follow the advice given by the appropriate authority.

8.   Teachers are responsible to ensure children under their care are aware of the
     procedures.
9.   The appointed emergency officer will be responsible for liaising with emergency
      services. All staff will report to the emergency officer when their areas have been
      checked and all their children are accounted for.
