Presented by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, in partnership with the Neighborhood Mediation Center Beginning Mediation and Conflict Resolution Certificate Program November 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15, 2008 Thursdays, 5-9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. This 40-hour certificate program prepares professionals from any industry to resolve conflicts and mediate disputes, enhancing organizational efficiency. Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process that involves the skillful intervention of a third-party professional to help resolve disputes that arise between two or more parties. Mediators help the parties clarify key issues, build possible outcomes and devise solutions that work well for all. Beginning Mediation and Conflict Resolution is taught by Trip Barthel, executive director and founder of the Neighborhood Mediation Center, a private, nonprofit organization that works with courts, law enforcement, schools and community organizations to provide conflict resolution services throughout Washoe County. Program topics • Awareness of personal values and biases • Listening and problem solving • Cultures and conflict • Team building • Organizational dispute resolution • Facilitating interpersonal relations • Recognizing and resolving conflicts early Continuing education units The Beginning Mediation and Conflict Resolution Certificate Program is approved for continuing education units (CEUs) from the following organizations: Nevada Department of Education (NDE) Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselors (NADG) Nevada Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists (NBMFT) Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers (NSW) Nevada Continuing Legal Education (NCLE) approved approved approved approved approved approved Certificate requirements To receive a certificate in Beginning Mediation and Conflict Resolution, participants must successfully complete the 40 hours of training. Attendance in all sessions is mandatory. Program fee and location • $875 by Oct. 10, 2008; $1,075 after Oct. 10 Fee includes all course materials, refreshment breaks, and lunch Friday and Saturday. • $20 fee is assessed for optional continuing education units (CEUs). • Sessions are held at the University of Nevada, Reno, Continuing Education Building, 1041 N. Full refunds will be given for courses cancelled by Extended Studies. For participant-initiated cancellations, participants must notify Extended Studies by noon, one week prior to the first day of class (excluding weekends and holidays), to receive a refund of fees paid, less a 15 percent administrative fee. No refunds will be administered after the first day of class.
