Approximately 200 families were in the Healthy Families program at Casa de los Niños this past year. There are 10 Family Support Specialists and 2 program supervisors employed at Casa de los Ninos with the program. The youngest mother is age 14 and the oldest is 41 years old. Janice(not her real name), who was pregnant, came to us via a self-referral during her last trimester, as her older sister was also in the program. Janice was 14 and pregnant. She had no family support, friends, or people she could turn to. Janice was not attending school. Her mother was a gang member and lost custody of Janice and her sister. Janice was also in a gang and became pregnant by a 25 year old male gang member, who she had been living with. Janice asked her Family Support Specialist to be at the birth of her baby and called her as soon as she went into labor. Her Family Support Specialist began working with Janice on parenting a newborn and learning the importance of attachment and bonding with her baby as she began to live in a group home. She brought Janice a crib and other baby items that had been donated to Casa de los Niños.
