Stocks, Stocks, Stocks In this activity you will: Collect data for stock in a particular company over a 10 day period Display you data in a table and then in a plot Calculate the percentage of increase/decrease Compare whole class data Introduction: We’re giving you $1,000 to try your luck at the stock market! OK—so it’s only fake money. Do us a favor and play along. Think of some companies that you like or that you think are very successful. Then, get the business section of your local newspaper or use the internet (www.msn.com ). Find the latest price of that company’s stock. The company’s stock name should be listed alphabetically under either the New York Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ Market. (The company’s name may be abbreviated in the stock table, but it’ll be alphabetized as though it’s written out.) Now look for the price listed in the column labeled “Last.” That’s the most up-to-date price for a share of that stock. With your $1,000, buy as many shares as you can of one company. The Problem: In this activity you will track a stock over 10 days. First using the internet you will research information about your chosen company to justify your choice. Then using the internet or newspaper record the daily price for your stock. You will then have to multiply the number of shares you purchased by the daily price to determine the value of your stock on a given day. You will examine any patterns to determine percentage increase/decrease.
Activity: Collecting Data: 1. In the table, write the name of the company in which you just bought stock, the number of shares you bought, and the value of the share for today. Then calculate the total value of all your shares. Repeat this each day, Monday through Friday, for two weeks. 2. After data collection is completed, transfer data to your TI-73. 3. Entering Lists a. You will be entering each column from your data table into a list. b. Press c.
