EDWARD GRIFFITH Donated by Mrs Owen, Bronala, Caernarfon, and Mrs Trevor Owen, Swansea COMPILED BY GWYN JENKINS, 1977 INTRODUCTION The Edward Griffith Collection of Deeds and Documents comprises 163 documents relating to properties in cos Mer., Mont. and Caern. and Herefordshire, dating from 1511 to 1905. Edward Griffith was a prominent antiquary from Dolgellau whose collection of literary MSS is also held in the Library (NLW MSS 2691-2754. For Edward Griffith (1832-1918) see the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, pp. 291-2). Not surprisingly, the large majority of the deeds relate to properties in the town of Dolgellau and in the surrounding parishes of Llanfachreth, Brithdir, Llangelynnin and Llanelltud. Among the more interesting deeds in this collection are two seventeenth century marriage settlements relating to the family of the Welsh American Quaker, Rowland Ellis of Brynmawr, Dolgellau (for Ellis (1650-1731) see the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, p. 212). No. 102 is the marriage settlement of Rowland Ellis’s father, Ellis Price, who married Anne Humffrey, daughter of Humffrey ap Hugh of Llwyngwril, in 1650. No. 113 is a post-nuptial marriage settlement, dated 9 January 1697, of Rowland Ellis’s daughter Anne, who had married the Rev. Richard Johnson of Doleychowgrid. Another deed of interest is no. 135 being a release (as part of a lease and release) of land at ‘Penucha yr Dre’, Dolgellau, ‘whereon is now erected the stone wall of a house intended for a chapel and a house on the south east gable, for the use of people commonly called Methodists’. Among the trustees mentioned in this deed is Thomas Charles of Bala. The collection was donated to the Library in 1918 by Edward Griffith’s daughters Mrs J. M. Owen of Caernarfon and Mrs Trevor Owen of Swansea. It was subsequently sorted into three boxes, numbered and catalogued on slips, but no type-written schedule was produced. In 1958 a schedule was produced but only of the contents of one of the boxes. Since the original method of cataloguing was unsatisfactory the entire collection has been re-catalogued and the 1958 schedule has been withdrawn. Thus this new schedule incorporates both the deeds included in the 1958 schedule and those in the remaining two boxes. To avoid confusion, the numbers on the deeds in the 1958 schedule (nos 1-97) have been retained, but the documents in the other two boxes have been re-numbered. The new schedule contains a table of concordance between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ numbers as well as an index of page references. 98 1511, May 26 1 Howell ap John Lippa, son and heir of John Lippa of Hynton 2 Rees ap Robert, Thomas Rynald, John ap Howell, farmer, and Walter ap Howell, farmer, of p.
