Due to the large numbers of students who participate in Interschools,
on snow parental involvement is required in order to fulfil our quota
for Officials and Team Managers. Both positions are easy to do and
require no specific skiing skills or knowledge of racing. You will also be
placed with your child (in the case of Team Manager) or on the event
your child is competing in (in the case of Official). Discounted lift
tickets are provided to Team Managers and a FREE lift ticket is offered
to Officials.

Please get involved with your kids and be part of the TEAM - it's great
fun.

           Club Background and Activities

Carey Snowsports Club was established in 1988 by a number of like-minded
families wishing to create an environment within the Carey Community that
fostered the interest they shared in snow activities.

The Club has grown over the years and has created many friendships between
both families and students within the school; making Snowsports an exciting and
friendly Club to be part of.

Carey Snowsports Club has received increased support from the School in
the form of funding and wonderful assistance from teachers. The teacher in
charge of Snowsports in 2009 is Mrs Libby Parkinson who will be assisted by
Mrs. Pam Westendorf and Mrs. Lee Taylor ( JS)

The driving force of ongoing activity comes from the many keen families that
enjoy the snow. Without the parent run Committee the Club would not exist.
Come along and get involved.

Much of the focus of our Club is on entering students in the Victorian Interschool
Championships at Mount Buller each year. You do not need to be an expert
skier / snowboarder as this level of competition is aimed at every type of
participant from novice to expert racer. In any of the Interschool Competitions
you will see a wide variety of participants in both ability and age. There are
divisions from Prep until Year 12. Div 5 includes Prep to Year 4, Div 4 covers
Years 5 & 6, Div 3 covers Years 7 & 8, Div 2 covers Years 9 & 10, and Div 1
covers Years 11 & 12. Carey Snowsports has a history of entering students
across all divisions. THIS IS A TEAM ACTIVITY AND EACH PARTICIPANT IS
IMPORTANT REGARDLESS OF LEVEL OR ABILITY.

There is great fun to be had in the Club with a steady calendar of activities from
term 2 onwards. You will find an outline of these in this booklet.

If you enjoy the Alpine environment and are interested in socializing with other
like-minded families this is the Club for you.

Please read on and if you have any questions feel free to contact any of the
Snowsports Committee.

“If you can ski green, you’re on the Team!”

CAMPS AND ACTIVITES

ALPINE TRIALS DAY – Monday 13th July

Mount Buller Race Department set up two timed racecourses on suitable terrain
(usually on Little Buller Spur) to run timed trials for both Snowboarding and
Skiing. The results of these trials are used to select our teams.

ALPINE TRAINING DAY – Sunday 19th July

This year Snowsports will be offering students the opportunity to get some
valuable on mountain training with Mt. Buller Race Dept. Buses will depart Carey
early Sunday morning for two x 2 hour sessions of race training.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

The Carey Snowsports Club, is aiming to promote cross-country skiing within
the school to all students of all ages. No previous downhill experience is
necessary. Students will be assisted with training and hiring or buying of
equipment. Cross country skiing is a challenging sport where fitness, skill,
motivation and determination are combined providing cross training for cross
country runners, swimmers and athletes. While it may sound like hard work, the
great thing about XC skiing, is that you can do it at your own pace, and anyone can
have a go – just the better you get at it, the fitter you are, the more fun you can
have. It is a great way to get involved in a team.

   • Training sessions at Lake Mountain and Falls Creek (Sat/Sun June-August)

   • Family Cross Country Trials/Fun Day Mt Buller – Sunday 20th July TBC

   • Victorian Interschool XC Championships Mt Buller Sunday 9th August

             Compulsory Alpine Trials Day
           Monday, 13th July, 2009 – Mt Buller

All students representing Carey Grammar on snow events need to be aware that
school rules apply as outlined in the school diary.

Trials Day at Mt Buller is compulsory for all students wishing to compete in the
Interschools. (Exceptions are made for students who have valid reasons for not
attending. These students will be allocated to teams at the School’s discretion.)
All students must be members of the Carey Snowsports Club, thus you will
need to return your Booking Form and Parent/Medical Consent Form to the
Sports Office by the due date.

Racecourses are set for Alpine and Snowboarding. Teams are selected using
the results from these races and are announced at the Team Announcement
Night, one week after Trials Day. All Skiers and Snowboarders of any ability are
welcome to participate in the trials. A list of all competitors is sent to Mt Buller
Race Department and bib numbers will be allocated. Course inspection can take
place from 11.30 am to 12.00 pm. Each competitor gets two runs on the same
course. Times trials start at 12.00 pm for Alpine, with Snowboarding Trials as
soon as skiers have completed both runs, usually around 1.30 p.m. After your
first race, go back up the lift to the top of the course to complete your second run.

In the afternoon, there is the opportunity to ski or board with other team
members. No specific trial is held for Boarder-cross, Skier-cross, Moguls and XC
ski teams, however, it is important that you tick these disciplines on the
Membership Details Form if you wish to participate in these events at the
Interschools. Any student wishing to trial but not intending to compete at the
Interschools must notify Mrs Westendorf in writing prior to Trials Day.

PERMISSION FORMS

All students are required to return a signed medical / permission form prior to
attending Trials Day. (Medical forms are printed from the database at School.

Cross Country Interschools Competitions will be held at Mt Buller on Sunday 9th
August. A bus will be available for early morning transport and late afternoon
return (please book this on the Booking Form).
Alpine, SkierX, Moguls, Snowboard and BoarderX will be held during the
Victorian Interschools Competitions held at Mt Buller from Sunday 23rd August to
Friday 28th August, 2009. The Middle and Senior School events start on
Sunday, 23rd August and conclude on Wednesday, 26th August. The Junior
School events commence on Wednesday, 26th August and finish on Friday, 28th
August.

TEAMS
The Carey teams are selected on the results of the time trials. All students who
attend time trials will be eligible to compete at the Interschools and must inform
the Sports Office if they do not wish to compete. Once the teams are entered it
is not possible to change them without medical certificates. Each student is
asked to be involved in as many disciplines as possible. You do not have to be
an advanced athlete to try an event.

ACCOMMODATION
All Students competing in Interschools Competitions need to be accompanied by
a parent or adult guardian. It is the responsibility of each family to arrange their
own accommodation for the Interschools. It is important that you organise this as
soon as possible as up to 3,000 competitors are involved and Mt Buller is very
busy during this week.

Information on a range of available accommodation can be found at
http://www.mtbuller.com.au/accommodation/ or from Mt Buller Accommodation
and Information Centre – 03 9885 0300 or email – mtbuller@mt.buller-

It is vital that you do not stay at the mountain longer than required, especially
senior school students, as it is important that you miss as little school as
possible.

PARENT SUPPORT
Carey is required to provide officials for each day of competition, as well as team
managers for our teams. It is vital that we have the support of parents to fulfil
these positions and encourage our students. The Interschools are a very busy,
fun and exciting time. If you have never been it is time to come and experience
an amazing week of competition and excitement. All help is much appreciated.
Please contact Matt Fitton (0419 354210) or John McDonald (0427 908 818), for
more information.

LIFT TICKETS AND ENTRY FEES
Carey Snowsports will provide each student with a lift ticket for the days they
are competing at a special competitor’s price. Tickets for parents will also be
provided at a cheaper price but only for the days that you are a Team Manager.
Tickets will not be provided for siblings, family members or friends who are not
competing for Carey. Each racer will be charged an event fee, however School
will cover all race entries for all students at Victorian Interschools.

EQUIPMENT
All students are responsible for providing their own equipment. It is possible to
hire skis and snowboards if you do not have your own.

                    HELMETS ARE COMPULSORY
                        for Downhill Events

HELMETS ARE COMPULSORY IN ALL EVENTS AT THE INTERSCHOOLS
AND IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO SHARE WITH ANOTHER STUDENT. (They are
not required for Cross Country). Many families have equipment that is for sale so
if you require skis, snowboards or helmets, speak to a Committee member or
other Snowsports Club members and they may be able to help.

                     Uniform and Clothing

Uniform

The School developed a new line of sports uniform in 2007. All
students are expected to wear the uniform while at official School
sporting events. This includes the Interschools Snowsports
Championships at Mt Buller.
It enables us to present as a team at functions, and allows for
recognition of Carey students at the various venues.

At official functions, including presentations, students are required to
wear
   • the Carey spray jacket and a pair of black pants(Carey tracksuit
       or other)

Other items of clothing that can be worn on the mountain and to
training, but are not to replace the official presentation uniform are

   • the long sleeve Polar Fleece Vest
   • the short sleeve Polar Fleece Vest
   • the Rugby Top
   • the (new) long Fleecy-lined coat.

All items are available at Bob Stewarts(Kew)
