Zhi Quan – 3rd Year B Eng (Ocean Engineering) I am from Malaysia. I learnt about the Ocean Engineering degree whilst studying for a Science degree at the University of Tasmania. I did some research and felt that it stood out from other engineering degrees. This appealed to me, along with the enthusiasm of my friends, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR MARITIME ENGINEERING AND HYDRODYNAMICS already in the programme, and I began my second degree in maritime engineering studies in 2006. As an institute of the University of Tasmania, AMC is part of a diverse study environment with undergraduate students from over 30 countries. The university provides a friendly and welcoming environment for students who are living away from home for the first time. In the last three years I have made many good friends from various cultures and found the academic staff to be supportive and friendly. Many of the AMC academic staff are involved in research within their chosen field. I find that this provides students with an enhanced understanding of their subject discipline and access to the latest developments in the offshore industry. Living in Launceston has been really enjoyable. It is a scenic city, with four distinct seasons. Commuting distances are short and it remains an affordable place to live. The lifestyle is laid back with few distractions which is good for my studies. When time permits, I like to go on road trips to explore the state. Tasmania has a lot to offer to the adventurer with its beautiful mountain ranges and coastlines. AMC has an excellent graduate employment record in the offshore industry. Each year a Maritime Engineering Careers Fair is held with companies coming from across Australia. The event gives students the chance to meet with industry representatives face-to-face to discuss work experience and career options. Employers recognise that AMC’s rigorous degree programme give graduates many transferable skills, as well as breadth Zhi Quan and depth in their chosen subject. Students are expected to undertake 12 weeks of work experience in order to graduate. I have been fortunate to have Current Student the opportunity to complete my work experience with Technip in Malaysia. B Eng (Ocean Engineering) I have found AMC to offer more than just an education. It has been a life-changing experience for 2009 – 3rd Year me. It has empowered me to achieve the things that I want in life and given me the skills and confidence to pursue my chosen career.
