					          Association of Cable Communicators Announces
2008 Golden Beacon and Beacon Award® Winners

Washington, DC ––During a gala ceremony the evening of April 1, the Association of
Cable Communicators (ACC) announced the winners of the 2008 Golden Beacon and
Beacon Awards®, honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs. ACC
awarded the Golden Beacon, the association's highest honor, to Discovery Channel's
Planet Earth. ACC also presented 72 Beacon Awards representing work by MSOs, cable
systems, programming networks, cable associations and technology providers in
categories such as community relations, programming publicity and public service
announcements. A list of the 2008 Beacon Awards can be found at the end of this
release. The Beacon Awards Ceremony was one of the many highlights of ACC's annual
conference FORUM 2008: "ACCess the Power: Connect. Communicate. Transform"
held March 30 - April 2 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.

ACC presented the 2008 Golden Beacon, awarded to a communications or public affairs
initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable's image
nationwide, to Discovery Channel's Planet Earth. This Emmy award-winning series
goes to the core of the company's mission to provide the world's highest quality
programming. The goal of Planet Earth was to present our world as it has never been
seen before, to create an epic HD series and to ensure that millions tuned in. Redefining
natural history, the series is one of the most ambitious projects Discovery has
undertaken, requiring every part of the company to make it a reality - including on air,
Discovery HD Theater, VOD, partnerships with groups ranging from national sponsors
to The Nature Conservancy, and creative publicity, marketing, and retail campaigns and
promotions. Ultimately, Planet Earth became the most watched cable event of the
century. It broke new ground in filmmaking techniques, went where no cameras have
gone before, and revealed startling new animals and animal behavior. It is truly natural
history for the 21st century.

In addition to the Beacon Awards and Golden Beacon Award, two other highly coveted
awards were presented during the ceremony. Time Warner Cable Staten Island received
the ESPN Good Sports Award, given annually to a project that generates outstanding
community involvement through education and athletics, for its initiative "Time Warner
Cable Triple Championship Tournament." BET Networks received the Joel A. Berger
Award for its initiative "Rap-It-Up Teen Forums." Named after former publisher of
Cablevision Magazine Joel Berger, this award is presented to a cable industry public
affairs campaign that achieves exceptional results in the area of AIDS awareness.

The association created the ACC Community Bridges Award in 2004 to recognize
outstanding partners outside of the cable industry, and this year ACC honored Habitat
for Humanity International. The cable industry is committed to improving the
communities in which it serves, and partner organizations or individuals are often
instrumental to the success of cable's efforts. The cable industry and Habitat for
Humanity International have partnered all across the country to raise awareness of the
need for decent housing and on local projects to build simple, decent and affordable
shelter.

Each year, ACC's President selects, and the ACC Board approves, the President's Award
recipients, honoring individuals for the development and implementation of
communications and public affairs initiatives within their own companies and
throughout the cable industry. The 2008 recipients were Patrick Esser, president of Cox
Communications, Inc. and Meredith Wagner, executive vice president, public affairs &
corporate communications, Lifetime Networks.

ACC members chose the 2008 Beacon Award winners during an extensive, two-phase
judging process. The overwhelming number of high-quality Beacon Award entries
submitted this year continue to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to
communications and public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over
the past year in areas such as community relations, education, multicultural public
relations and public service announcements.
