Searching for Chipeta

This is the story of Chipeta, a strong and wise woman who played a major role in the history of the Ute Indian tribe and the United States in the nineteenth century. She married Ouray, who was appointed chief of the Ute people by the United States government, and together they worked tirelessly to promote peace and negotiate on behalf of their people. The Utes were eventually forced out of Colorado, due to many uncontrollable events, including broken treaties by the United States government. Chipeta’s story unveils the real story of the Ute people and how they lost their homelands in Colorado.
