NATIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FORUM (NSTF)
AWARDS FUNDING PROPOSAL
th
8 NSTF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARDS
GALA DINNER FOR 2005/6
“Recognizing and celebrating excellence in Science, Engineering and
Technology Innovation for economic growth and human capacity
development.”
PLEA FOR PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT
The NSTF is the largest and longest surviving multi-stakeholder body, representing
all sectors involved in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) in SA.
The NSTF Science and Technology (S&T) Awards are fully recognized and
supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The Honourable
Minister of S&T, Mr Mosibudi Mangena is the Patron of the Awards.
The prestigious Awards Gala Dinner is to take place at Emperor’s Palace in
Kempton Park on Friday, 19 May 2006, from 17:30.
As always, for the past 7 years, we depend on YOUR support and participation for
the success and influence of this event!
1. New developments
As part of making the Function a memorable occasion for all who participate, we
are producing a CD ROM this year, to be inserted in the booklet of Finalists, and
provided to all guests at the dinner, with information about the Finalists, previous
winners and audio clips of interviews with some of them.
1
We are also getting more media coverage for the winners and for the event,
including interviews on Campus radio stations across the country, distributing the
CD to journalists, and discussions via the Web. The Event itself ought to
be interesting and enjoyable too.
Sponsors therefore have a number of new opportunities to support the Awards,
besides buying tables at the Event. Namely:
• Sponsoring radio air time for interviews with past and present winners (e.g. R15
000), with an opportunity to flight the sponsor's own advertisement on Campus
Radio Stations.
• There is also the possibility of producing a newspaper supplement describing the
finalists' work. (For this plan in particular, we would need substantial
sponsorship). This would give the greatest exposure to the Sponsor.
• Sponsoring small gifts for all guests attending the Awards Function, with an
opportunity for branding. We are thinking of modest handcrafted gifts (about R50
each), one for each of the expected 550 guests. We would prefer to support
Poverty Alleviation Projects by buying gifts from the CSIR crafts shop (or similar
small business). We therefore require an amount in the region of R30 000 for
this purpose.
2. APPEAL FOR SPONSORSHIP
We appeal to your organization to further participate and collaborate with us by
sponsoring a seat/s or table/s at the above-mentioned presentation ceremony.
Your support will elevate the status of the Awards, and will ensure the success of
this nation-building event. Through its success, your organization will benefit too
by association with a profoundly effective and high-profile occassion!
The NSTF CEO would be glad to meet with you or a representative of your
organization to further discuss this request. The office of the Secretariat can be
contacted at the numbers below to schedule a meeting.
3. STRATEGIC INTENT AND MAJOR OBJECTIVES
• To reward excellence and celebrate achievements in SET throughout SA;
• To honour role models in SET work;
• To acknowledge and praise the achievements in Mathematics and SET of
learners and educators in SA. (Including top learners identified by the Expo
for Young Scientists, the Olympiads; top female matric learners; outstanding
contributions of Teachers in Mathematics and Science in previously
disadvantaged schools in SA; and the top Dinaledi schools);
• To promote a stronger public profile for SET through these Awards.

4. BACKGROUND
This high-profile event has had considerable success in the past seven years,
and has been supported by the State President’s office, the Ministry of Science
and Technology, other Cabinet Ministers and Parliament. The previous winners
of these awards have been widely recognized as worthy recipients, thereby
establishing themselves as commendable role models in the SET community.
The NSTF S&T Awards affords an opportunity to all practicing Scientists,
Engineers and Technologists across the board.
A few years ago, three new categories were introduced, which are sponsored by
ESKOM and the National Research Foundation (NRF), with the object of
encouraging more black entrants into the field of SET. They are specifically
designed to encourage black researchers and those who mentor them and
provide special research grants for the winners in these categories.
As expected, the 2005 call for nominations for this year’s Awards, again attracted
many creditable nominees. An Adjudication Panel of independent judges
representing all sectors within the NSTF was nominated to review the
nominations. Twelve winners, one from each of the categories, will be
announced and presented with the prestigious, specially designed trophies at the
Gala Dinner dedicated to this occasion, in May. The Minister of Science and
Technology as our patron, will take part in the presentation of trophies to the
winners, and has agreed to deliver the keynote address.
5. WHO’S WHO IN SET IN SA
The annual publication of the NSTF, “Who’s Who in SET in SA” serves as a
programme for the Awards Ceremony. The booklet is also intended to:
• Contribute to a database of all the nominees;
• Record the work and achievements of SET Practitioners in SA;
• Increase the exposure of the individuals and companies nominated;
The information in this book is also loaded on our website for easy access, at
www.nstfawards.org.za , as well as on the CD ROM which is being prepared for
distribution to the media and at the event itself.
Sponsor Opportunity: We appeal to supporters of SET for sponsorship of
this booklet and the CD ROM. This will be acknowledged in the booklet and
on the CD ROM by publishing their logo or an advertisement of the sponsor
organization.
