Check your cell phone plan, some have a set monthly fee and allow you to send a certain number of messages before you are charged for them. Once you go over your limit, you will be charged for each additional message. Most providers also charge you to receive text messages as well. Here are a few things you should find out before you sign up for your plan: • How many text messages can you send each month? • If you go over your limit, how much will it cost you per message sent and received? • How can you check the number of messages you’ve sent in between bills? What Do You Know About TAXES? Starting with your first paycheck you will notice that some money is taken out for federal income taxes and possibly state and local taxes too. Companies are required by law to take this money out of all employees’ pay. There are three significant things to help you understand income tax: • Age is not a factor when determining whether or not a person has to pay income tax. If any person makes more than $600, they will need to file an income tax form and pay taxes on the appropriate amount. • When you get a job, you will be required to fill out a W-4 form. When you get paid, there will be deductions (taxes) taken off your gross income. These deductions should all be explained on your paycheck stub. You will receive a W-2 form from your employer on or before January 31st of the following year you have worked. • You need to file an income tax return if you have made a specific amount in earned and unearned earnings. Unearned earnings are income from investments, interest, capital gains, etc. Your parents and their tax advisors can help you with this. Trivia Tidbits • A cat can run 12 miles an hour. • A cheetah can run 46 miles an hour for short distances. • The fastest human can run 18 miles per hour. • About 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. • Lightening strikes about 6,000 times per minute on our planet. • A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. • You blink over 10,000,000 times a year. • Of all the words in the English language, the word “set” has the most definitions. • The vocabulary of the average person consists of 5,000 to 6,000 words. • No word in the English language rhymes with “month”. • The average person walks the equivalent of twice around the world in a lifetime. Where Did All Your Money Go? Have you ever had a lot of money from work, chores, birthdays or other special occasions, and you put that money in your wallet with plans in place as to what you were going to buy? However, after a short period of time the money was gone and you had nothing to show for it. Create some new habits to start saving and keeping track of your money. • Set a goal…whether it’s to buy a new bike, CDs, video games, a car or college. • Set aside some or all of your money and deposit it into your CU Advantage account. You’ll be surprised at how fast your balance grows. • If you’re age 16 -17, open a checking account and you can then track exactly where your money is spent. • Avoid carrying a lot of cash around with you. Use ATMs when you need cash. • Invest your money in a Credit Union share certificate where you’ll earn a higher return on your balance. Developing good savings habits now will reap big rewards for you in the future. If you need help getting started, stop by the Credit Union office and we’ll help you set up a savings plan that’s right for you. • “Go” is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.
