Shiphandling and Maneuvering with Bridge Resource Management or Bridge Team
Management
This course is basically practical and consists mainly of a series of exercises progressively
becoming complex and critical performed on a Ship’s Bridge Simulator Systems delivered by
Kongsberg Maritime Simulation Systems AS for ship officers who practiced ship handling and
maneuvering on board various types of vessel (PCC,VLCC, Bulk Carrier, Twin Screw and
General Cargo).
Objectives:
The candidates who successfully completed this course will have gained experience in handling
various types of vessels under various conditions (except ice) and will make a more effective
contribution to the bridge team during ship maneuvering in approaches, harbor and/or open
seas to avoid collision and close quarter situations.

Review of basic knowledge in ship handling; Practical Ship handling including the VLCC’s pivot
point; Factors to consider in ship handling; Rudder and propeller; Maneuvering information; The
Anchor; Wind and current effects; Narrow channels; The use of tugs.
STCW Reference:
Table AII/ 1.8; AII/ 2.9
Training Methodology:
Classroom Instructions (20%), computer based instruction (10%) and Dynamic real time
simulation (70%). Certificate of Training shall be given to each candidate who satisfactorily
completed the course and passed the Simulator Exercise Evaluation System, a built in
computerized objective assessment within the Polaris SBS 2000.
